Hallo all. It's a brand new week!

  • Hi Cirrus

RE: - we are having an Indian summer.  Anyone know where that expression comes from?

It usually applies to  really mild weather at end October/November time.. I think it originates of from Native American Indians, I shall google it

All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy.

  • Hello Alan

Yes Kingfishers are rather beautiful. I was at WWT Slimbridge early this year and saw a group of visitors just 'hanging about' clogging up the walk way. 'What's all this about ' I thought. Then I joined the group and lo and behold, on a not very tall tree of some sort, just behind the fencing that keeps us visitors off the pens, a kingfisher sat and dived several times into the small pool inside this particular pen (can't remember the wild fowl within it). It was enchanting ! We were so close. Admittedly keeping still and quiet, but still !!!!

  • Hi Gary

What you said about photos and copyright above is correct as a general principle i.e. you shouldn't post them directly, unless you own the copyright or have the copyright holder's permission.

Hyperlinks ARE generally OK - it's just that the Terms and Conditions for the Natuxo site specifically forbid them, a bit unusual I know. I think it's something we should be aware of, and check before we provide a link from the forum to any new site.

  • Cirrus : They are very beautiful birds. My second favourites at the moment next to Ospreys of course.

Weather here back at base is :

    Sunny , Wind WSW 10mph , Visibility 40kms , Pressure 1027hPa falling.

    Temperature 16.0c , Dewpoint 6.2c , Wet bulb 12.8c , Humidity 43%

  • Thanks for that Sue. I didn't know about the specific site restrictions.:) Something for me to check in the future.

What a lovely spot that was Alan

Cirrus, having a very nice visit thanks. Haven't seen her since Christmas so a lot to catch up on. She is 75 next week . She can't walk that far up hills so we do short walks on the flat. She isn't too much of a wildlife buff, hence me getting into it a bit late.

She is talking crazy golf or a water park!!

  • Well, I personally hope it turns out to be a water park. Mum on a jet ski sounds fascinating   ;)  (just joking )

  • Morning all: It's so nice to wake up and check the blog - like wandering into my living room and finding friends sitting about chatting pleasantly about pleasant things and learning a lot too. For anyone who's interested, the Wikipedia definition of Indian Summer gives several interesting interpretations and suggested origins that are too long to include here. Whatever the origiins, I'm glad you're all enjoying one.

Gary: Love the idea of drive-by-comments. A water park, eh? I'm imagining a 75-year-old lady zipping down one of those giant slides. I used to play miniature golf on the Lees in Folkestone as a kid. Everyone else in the family hated it, so always made a point of taking my grandkids (and now I know why everyone else hated it - spent all my time retrieving errant balls from other players' areas).

Auntie: Gordon Ramsey eh? Now there's an idea with legs!  (I'd rather Julia Child, but she's gone to that great kitchen in the sky.) Did not catch the photo of Xalbai - will have to go back and check it out.

AQ: What work do you do if you don't mind my asking?

Also wonder about Garten. Saw a kingfisher last year when I was back visting my hometown (Watford) and spent an afternoon in my old haunt, Cassiobury Park.

Diane: The taping of "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" was fascinating. I'll describe it on your page when I get a minute later since it's probably not fascinating to our UK friends. One of the questions did get a big response from the audience (the English couple who came back from vacation to find their entire garden gone and reinstalled next door??) Now THOSE are neighbors you'd want to lose!!

  • What a super description of the blogs, Annette. I do know what you mean though.

But right now I have to get ready to go to work and charge out the door. Looking forward to an update on my return. (secretly hoping the girls are staying put)
