Tracking Loch Garten Ospreys : July 2011- May 2012

I offered yesterday to start a new Topic once Bynack had fledged, but as we now have the updated Satellite Tracking page, and biography pages for Tore and Bynack, and there are some tracking results for Tore on Google Earth, I’ve gone ahead with it.

A brief introduction to the ospreys we’re tracking – first, the class of 2011.

Tore – link to her Biography

Tore is the elder of this year’s juveniles, her ring is blue/white 48. She fledged on Tuesday 12th July aged 54 days, and has started to do a little exploring.   

Bynack – link to his Biography

Tore’s younger brother, ring blue/white 47. Bynack is aged 53 days today and has yet to fledge.

Edit: He has fledged, at 10.18 am today 16/7. 

Rothes – link to her Biography

Rothes is the eldest of EJ and Odin’s offspring, hatched at Loch Garten in 2009. Her ring is white/black PJ. She migrated as a juvenile to Guinea-Bissau, and spent her formative months on the small island of Unhocomozinho, in the Bijagos Archipelago. Now a sub-adult, she has travelled north to Europe for the first time this summer and is currently in the Gironde estuary in SW France, where she also spent 6 weeks on her way south in 2009. So far, she has not returned to the UK.

Rothes' earlier travels were followed in this thread, now closed.

    Rachel & SheilaFE even if it is too peaty at the Loch to catch fish  he made the association of water and fish.  Ospreys are not  ground birds so to be  be down low enough to get his  feet muddy he must know  water is where the fish are. Until they make that association they  have no incentive to learn to fish. Now when he explores the area and sees another body of water he will probably  check that out. This to me is  a  huge  milestone toward his survival. Plus he can  practice fishing while he still gets fed at the nest.

    I hope we also see Tore with muddy feet in the next few days

    Rothes had muddy feet before he left on migration No one reported seeing  Mallachie or Garten with muddy feet.

    I think I remember a comment from a previous year (before Rothes? Certainly before I got interested) that a juvenile had been spotted at least trying to fish in either Loch Garten or Loch Mallachie, so it wouldn't be completely without precedent. Hopefully the next batch of data will provide some clues.

    On Friday 28th July 2006 the juvenile osprey yellow 8U was recorded as catching a 8 inch brown trout. I am not sure where she  caught it.

    I am hoping  Bynack & Tore follow Odin when he goes fishing. There is no point in following EJ, they could never haul  the  whoppers she catches out of the water. They need a place with smaller fish .

    No change for Rothes . Latest fix 5th August. Not much ranging from Tore or Bynack.

    I installed Google Earth and have a  few questions

    1 How can I isolate the tracking lines for Tore & Bynack. I have a tangled web of lines from all of the tagged LG chicks and it is  difficult to  see who went  where?

    2. What  color are the lines for Tore & Bynack? I  see the lines with 2011 dates . One is orange and one is  purple, but I don't know  which color belongs to which bird.

    3. Can I isolate Rothes's tracking lines ?

    Barbara   When you switch on Google Earth all the tracked birds come up.  If you want a track to disappear then deselect it by unchecking it. That way you can look at as many or as few tracks or points as you like.

    Just about to log out, but this is a note I wrote for Leen which should answer the question. 

    Bynack is purple, Tore is gold, Rothes is lime green.

    Selecting Route & Points for individual birds


    This is done using the Places panel on the LHS of the Google Earth display.
    Look at the Loch Garten Ospreys folder. To its left there are 2 little boxes. If the first one has a + in it, click on it to open the folder and display the sub-folders. Most of the ospreys have 2 sub-folders, called Route and Points, Rothes has 2 of each as her data has been split up. The + against a Points sub-folder can also be clicked on, to expand it and display a list of the individual points. If a Points folder is expanded, it will have a – in the box; click on this to hide the list of Points.
    Go back to the Loch Garten Ospreys folder, and look at the second box which has a tick in it. Click on the box to remove the tick, and all the routes & points will disappear from the map. Now go down to the sub-folders for the osprey you want to see e.g. Tore. Click on the blank boxes for Tore’s Route and Points sub-folders, which ticks them; on the map, this will display her gold route and points only. You can also display or hide individual points, or groups of Points, in a similar way.
    Navigation
    In the Places panel, double clicking on a Point zooms you in on that Point.
    On the map, double clicking zooms you in, moving the mouse wheel zooms you in or out.
    That’s probably enough for now - there are other features like Tours, but they aren’t relevant yet for Tore and Bynack.

    Barbara - See my post under fishing. Just been out this evening watching a family for three hours where the two juveniles followed dad fishing but never participated in a dive. Just followed him back to the nest area after he caught a pike. So they certainly follow dad and observe.
