Morning all: Late checking tonight. Back later...

  • DIANE   thanks for the opportunity to see those geese again. Saw it on our news in the morning. what a heart warming story. It is on a par with pics of policemen in the middle of London holding the traffic up in order to let ducks and babes cross the road to get to water in safety.

  • CIRRUS    I was thinking the same. Why penalise the farmers and yet ordinary households can use their water as normal.

  • The reason that the farmers are restricted from abstracting water from the rivers is to protect the fish and other wildlife in those rivers. Farmers often abstract far more than they need and often illegally.

  • This is what the Environment Agency are saying:

"There are increasing problems facing farmers in parts of Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, parts of Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire and western Norfolk as drought takes hold. We have asked nearly 100 farmers across this area to comply with conditions stated on their abstraction licences and to stop abstracting water. In Suffolk we have pre-warned around 200 farmers that we may need to introduce formal Section 571 (under Water Resources Act 1991) restrictions by the end of June.

We continue to work closely with farmers to keep them up to date with the situation. Together with farmers and other abstractors, we are working to find ways to make existing water resources go further. "

  • "Now all I have to do is to learn how to ride the darn thing"    Actually quite pleased with myself as I did a 2 mile ride this afternoon. that may not seem much to you seasoned bikers but to me it was a marathon. OK with the cycling, it is the first few yards that set me wobbling!!!!

  • OG    Finger trouble with earlier post.   In this house edible chips are known as "chippy Whips" , This is for Dillons' benefit, as in "Does Dillon want a chippy whip?" The garden type are just chips. Ok, daft but there we are. Luckily we do not eat chippy whips very often and Dillon remains slim. By the way we stopped his metacalm 5 days ago and the limp has not returned. Today he had his longest walk so far so hopw all is well tomorrow morning.

  • Just to let you know that Heather and I are going down to LG tomorrow to meet up with Margo and take her out to lunch. Just spoken to her by text and she is working tonight from 6-10pm. Still full of excitement!!!

  • Starting this Sat afternoon – will add bits until tonight.  Had some showers around midday - looks as if we could have more before dark.  Put clothes out this morning then let them “stew” over lunch, before returning to put half back in wardrobe and pack the rest!

Forgot to mention a couple of days ago Carrion Crow who comes for his morning drink brought a friend!  Have some new Goldfinch fledglings – being fed by parent, whereas others are now self-sufficient.

Diane – couldn’t get the Goslings video – it was a sports page and actually blank!  Take care with your long list!

FlashSadie – welcome, good to see you posting here.  I think you get quite a lot of Ospreys making passage via Nottinghamshire – so keep watching!

Alan – hope Lady P likes her “stuff” having got it home, otherwise you may have another trip to return or exchange, that’s what some shopping ladies around here seem to do!  Please post pics of the Camels when they arrive!  Thanks for Red Kites link – great to be able to watch them - hope they are successful.  Knew about the project, and sadly some birds lost in past years that “belonged” to schools.  I guess Bettyboo’s OH might have something to tell us about water extraction in Cambridgeshire – he works on the Ouse.

Dibnlib – LOL about inConvenience!  Son complained at high numbers of people in Inverness today – I just told him he was daft to go there when RockNess is on!  Plenty of our neighbours and acquaintances here go abroad for hols, and have never been north of Moffat – or maybe only to Glasgow for shopping!  Hey, that’s brilliant to see you on your bike – and two miles is a great achievement, especially with arthritic knees – only increase that distance very slowly until you get used to it!  Fingers crossed for Dillon that he doesn’t feel stiff and achy tomorrow after today’s longer walk.

Rosiemac - thanks for update on Margo’s arrival – almost as exciting as when EJ arrived at the end of March!  Brilliant that you are taking Heather to see Margo tomorrow – good that H doesn’t need to rely on her OH to get there (her fist visit!) and really kind to take M out.  LG will wonder where all her friends are coming from!

Cirrus – TSR2 can be seen at Cosford RAF Museum in the West Midlands.  Re “yield” on road signs – Big Rig Trucker Steve is a Christian, and he reckons it’s a reminder to yield to God!

Wendy – so pleased Margo saw Odin so soon – and that she is on 6-10 this evening – and as you say, will still be light while she is getting her bearings.  She must have been very grateful to have your help today.  Sorry you had wet weather driving home.  Thanks for keeping us updated here - and through calls to Rosiemac earlier today, too.  Agree about narrowness of Concorde – visited the prototype at Duxford museum and, as you say, like being inside a metal tube!

Just been to check garden, greenhouse, shed and garage for watering (not much!), feeding birds etc before we go.  Picked first Cucumber and put in fridge for next weekend and spoke nicely to Tomatoes which are now forming!  Maybe summer soon?

That’s it – putting computer to bed now until Friday night or Saturday morning next week.  Be good, stay well, have fun and look after each other!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Great to know that you and Heather are going to meet Margo tomorrow, and to hear of Wendy's journey with her.  I'm very envious - should have been starting my week in Nethy Bridge today.  Quite tearful at times but it can't be helped.  Have fun together.

  • Interesting to read of 'Yield' signs on roads.  In the Irish Republic, the equivalent of our Give Way signs say 'Yield'.  If I've been to a dog agility show in Dublin, I rread the NI signs as 'Yield' for a day or two - amazing how the mind works.
