Weekly Chat, Sunday May 29, 2011

Almost forgot about starting this one!  Off to read last few posts of last week.

  • Morning all,

Thanks for all the chat and pics.

OG: Nice pic of the young Chaffinch, quite similar to the goldfinch apart from the colouring. We did not get Radio Chaffinch here until recently but the last few mornings I have been listening to it as I walked Hamish. Must be something to do with going digital.

Off on the dreaded shopping mission soon. I am going out now and I may be some time.

  • Morning, Everyone:   Not as sunny as I hoped here, but it should clear up later, and be warmer.

A quick reply to a few, before I go out to refill the bird baths etc.

Alan:  Can almost hear you girding your loins before you sally forth to do your duty!   Lovely pic of the baby Goldie, I've copied it if you don't mind.

OG:  And a baby Chaffinch or two from you, too - how lovely.  We have lots of baby Sparrows in the garden, and some of the starlings are still feeding their young, even though they are almost the same size as their parents, now.  Its good to see the Sparrows, as we did not have anything like as many a few years ago, and I was worried about the populations, but last year they seemed to pick up, and now we have lots of them.

Brenda:  So sorry that you found your S iL & B. iLaw struggling somewhat - hope that her tests can reveal what is ailing.

margo:  Your poor OH!  I'm sure he didn't deserve such a traumatic trip - and to come back with a sore ankle, too. You and Billie will have to console him.

Glad to see that Annette is giving the hammock a good testing out - you have a bit of rest, you have been so busy of late (again!)

OH is finishing the painting at the front of the house, & yesterday had to take up the bathroom floor as we found that the waste pipe from the shower had deteriorated & was threatening to do the ceilings some damage - he did lots of banging around, and bought some new plumbing fixings, and did it himself, thereby saving us a lot of money in plumbers fees. Whew!  Now looking around for new floor covering for shower room, as the old is shabby (so it gives me an excuse to have new  - hooray!).

    Have a good day, All.

  • Sorry, the above post has duplicated - it took forever, then put two of itself on here.  Have erased it.

  • Morning all ... it is very warm here already ... even in the shade! We are promised 23 C ... we shall see. I went out and put the hosepipe on all the pots first thing, before the sun came round ... I'm not sure they would survive a scorching hot day. No shopping mission for me today ... I was at the hairdresser yesterday, so combined it with a visit to ASDA, and the local Garden Centre. I bought another lavender for a pot on the patio (as if I haven't got enough already!) ... I do love them, and its lovely to watch all the bees and butterflies.

Diane - thanks for the owl link ... wonderful birds! I hope you survived the very hot weather and your grass cutting. Loved your account of the Queen Bee Saga

Alan - wonderful baby goldfinch pic ... have saved it ... its way off the cuteness scale :-)

OG - lovely pics of your birds too ... and what a pretty card for dibnlib ... very thoughtful of you. Naturally we are all thinking of her and wishing her well. How lovely to see that array of birds in your garden!

Brenda - sorry about your SiL and her OH ... life can be such a trial sometimes.

ALICAT - have a great holiday ... I'm sure Bobbie will love it!

margobird - sorry to hear about your OH's mishaps last night . Have you started packing yet?     :-)) I am so looking forward to hearing about it when you get back.

Right ... must stop and get a drink before I get de-hydrated ... its a real problem for me in hot weather!

    Take care.

  • Alan - they're here!  Two baby Goldfinches came - with three adults - this morning!  Photo to follow.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • OG - how lovely to see them ... looking forward to the photo! My goldfinches only drop by for a quick drink, several times a day, at the moment.

  • A quick note having arrived at work following a nap after returning from overnight protection duty at Bassenthwaite - Chrisy, Nathan says the seats have been made and he is awaiting delivery (2)! He hopes to have them in place before summer hols.

  • We went to Merriment Gardens this morning to buy some more bird seed as OH reckoned that the birds were walking up and down the fence with placards saying that the feeders were getting very low. For the first time we have nut hatch fledgelings. Trying desperately to get a photograph, but Mum is keeping them deep in the tree.

Alan and OG, lovely photo's of your baby goldfinch and chaffinch. We have had sparrows in the bluetit boxes for the second year, although they live in the hedgerows. We have noticed that one of the boxes where the young had fledged, has already got a second nest started.

Margo, Good to hear your OH enjoyed his gig last night but then to have a two hour walk and with a swollen ankle, poor fellow. He deserves some sympathy.

Linda, It must be fantastic to have a husband, who can just repair any problems in the house. I am afraid I didn't marry one of those. I have to pick up the phone !!  I found that when my OH went away on a business trip, that was when things would go wrong, but I did learn how to fix some things myself by watching the trades people. Enjoy choosing your new flooring or did you loosen the connection to the shower so that you could then buy new flooring !!

Terry, Do you get any sleep when you are on night duty at Bassenthwaite ? If not, you must be shattered and you are at work.

Annette, Enjoy your hammock. Good to hear you are taking some relaxation tme.

Diane, It was brilliant to hear about your queen wasp and her nest. I am not sure I would be too happy having it so near though.

Joan, Our car was showing 23c when we went out this morning, so keep drinking.

Hope you are all enjoying the sunshine.
