Weekly Chat, Sunday May 29, 2011

Almost forgot about starting this one!  Off to read last few posts of last week.

  • Joan, Lindy, OG, and All Owl People: Here's a wonderful new video produced by the Barn Owl Trust. Only about 3 minutes. Highly recommended!  Barn Owls

  • Good morning all and at least it is a bit warmer here today.  The wind has dropped and I just wish it would do the same at LG.  As I sit here typing Billie is sat next to me, not on the mouse mat this time and doing what she does so well and that is relaxing.  Has been very playful over the last couple of days and I roared with laughter at her earlier as she was trying to catch a shaft of sun on the carpet.  PH says he cannot believe what a perfact little cat she is and this from someone who wasn't really fond of cats.

WendyB it is true what you say osprey numbers are increasing  and it is life in a natural world.  I am so looking fowrd to meeting you and going to LG. Had it not been for my OH being persistent and saying I should go while I can, I would probably not have applied to volunteer although I wanted to do so.  Lack of confidence on my part so I am glad he kept on about it.  I have a sneaky suspicion that I will want to do it again next year.

OG love the pics of the coal tit, chaffinches and sparrows.

ALICAT I see you asked about clothes for your holiday.  I am taking warm clothes with me to LG as I would rather be hot than cold.  It will be a jeans and teeshirt week so I can always take a jumper offif  I am too warm. Juset hope that dreaded wind will drop before I go.

Lynette LG visit will be busy but it will be the kind of work I will enjoy.

TerryM hope it is warm for your night protection duty.  Have really enjoyed reading about your holiday and how kind that you were offered the croft to stay in when it was so wet for camping.  Still no photos of Billie she scarpers everytime we get the camera out.  OH will indeed spoil Billie while I am away.     He really has taken to her in a big way.  Spoils her rotten buying toys and treats for her.  She seems to have passed some of her relaxation skills on to him which is no bad thing as he has a very busy job.

ChrissyB thanks for your good luck wishes for my forthcoming LG trip.

Diane  liked you post about the wasps.  I have the same problem in that they always go for me.  I am so terrified of getting stung and PH says if I didn't flap around so much they would leave me alone but afraid it doesn't work that way for me.  I will agree that it must have been interesting watching them and thanks for the pics too.

trish2 that was early to be in Asda, hope the shelves had been filled.  OH has tried this at times but says that half the shelves are empty and he has to go back anyway.

Lindybird reading about shopping trips that have to be made I reaslise how thoroughly spoilt I am as OH does all the shopping and actually enjoys it.  Perhaps I should hire him out as a personal shopper.  Hope the floor cleaning is finished and you can get back to the more imporant job of watching ospreys.

OH is in London tonight to a gig so have a bit more time again to spend watching and reading.  Have a good day all.

  • Diane  thanks for the link to the Barn Owls, the most beautiful of all owls.

  • Afternoon all,

Thanks for all the earlier chat.

Joan : Thanks for the Avocet pics. Not seen one yet.

Spent this morning at Rutland Water. All is going well there. Here are a couple of non osprey pics. The rest are on the Rutland thread:

  • Hi margobird, thanks for that i think i will do that

  • Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Morning all:

OG: Lovely azalea (rhododendron?) for dibnlib!

Diane: Typical of media not to show Shuttle landing, but surprised that CNN didn't since I saw the info on the landing on their website. The Endeavor will be coming to the California Science Center in Los Angeles, so will have to make a trip to say hallo!  Have you ever been to the Smithsonian's Air & Space Museum in DC? It's marvellous.  Barn Owl video is wonderful - I wonder if the U.S. population is in the same predicament....

Jay-Me: I always wanted to watch a Shuttle launch too. They built the launch pads at Vandenberg AFB up the road, but then never used them for some reason I can't remember...  They've landed them at Edwards AFB, about two hours away, but only when the weather in Florida is bad and we never know until the last moment.   Good grief! Christmas cards already - good for you! Your painting hobby(?) sounds lovely and relaxing.  I always go to local graveyards when  I'm traveling, especially the "pioneer" graveyards - you see names of settlers from all over the world and wonder about their stories....  Speaking of which, wonder how AQ is doing on her Grand Tour.

Lindybird: Had to laugh at "confused husbands" - though they could all take a page from Alan's book who I'm sure tackles supermarkets in his typical "manly" fashion and doesn't look confused at all.  I've tried attacking Trader Joe's at allegedly "off" hours only to find it overrun with local college kids whose schedules defy reason!

Alan: Very dramatic coloring on those birds; I always wonder about the evolutionary whys and wherefores....

Margobird:  How many days to LG?  You mentioned on the Daily Update about ringing the chicks and yes, let's do keep fingers crossed that we don't have a repeat of last year when it was too windy to attempt!  Sounds like you're being smart in taking layers to LG.

OK, really should get organized. Take care all; back later!

  • OG  thanks for doing that beautiful card for dibnlib have been thinking of her today.

  • Hi Annette  9 days to go now, can hardly believe my visit is so close.  I am going to be on a real high by the time I get there.  Have a good day.

Sharing my time with Billie who likes to sit with me most of the time, osprey watching and looking in on the Andy Murray match.  He started off a bit slowly but has won the first set on a tie break and has a break in the second set so looking good at the moment.

  • Diane you'll have to take some pics and post them on this thread. Sounds really fascinating.
