Almost forgot about starting this one! Off to read last few posts of last week.
HI all: Don't forget to check the last page or three of the previous thread. OH and I were naughty today; went to a sort of upmarket garden decor store in Carpenteria and bought a fountain for the garden; won't be ordered until Tuesday (after the Memorial Day holiday) and then will take a few weeks to be delivered, but should be nice for the birds (and us) once it's set up. I think we're just a couple of days away from buying a propane-fueled BBQ too - mad fools that we are!
dibnlib: I'm tall but when I'm on a bike I really don't like not being able to stand with my feet on the road; also like handlebars where I can sit up and look around too. Re your fancy new toilet roll holder, I say if it makes you smile, that's good enough reason to buy it.
OG: Interesting about haircuts - maybe it's because of spring? Now at least I'll be able to comb mine after washing it without running into tangles. Here's a shot from my road trip to Arizona - eeek! another big one; really must install Photoshop.
Hi, all. Welcome to a new week. I found this story fascinating -- probably no one else will -- but I'm posting it anyway. LOLOL
In 1991, some people were hiking high in the Otztal Alps near the Italian-Austrian border. They stumbled across the frozen, mummified body of a man who lived 5,300 years ago. That's before Stonehenge was constructed or the pyramids at Giza were built.
They found his clothes and his equipment with him. Scientists have completed 3D imaging of his skull and other bones and now they know what he looked like! See pictures here:
Otzi, the Copper Age Man
You can see a full-length picture of him by clicking Next in the slideshow. I thought it was interesting that his clothing left his bum bare!!! Brrr!!!
The man died from an arrow wound at the age of 46 (very old for that time). He was 5 feet 3 inches and weighed 110 pounds (7.86 stones).
Diane: That's an amazing piece of work on the Iceman; wonder if he wore any kind of shirt that didn't survive; interesting that the legs were so well protected (unlike the other bits!) :-)
Very tired tonight, so off to bed. Have a nice Sunday all.
Annette: Really beautiful photo! I hope you enjoy your lovely new fountain. I look forward to a picture of it.
Alan: Loved the new tufted duck photo!
Tiger: Also loved the photos you posted, especially the ducks.
OG: I'm getting my haircut Tuesday, too. Can't wait; it's scratching my neck. I've thoroughly enjoyed your latest garden pics. What were those birds in your 6:03 post -- the fat ones who followed you? I feel like I should know but couldn't come up with a name. They are grand!
Lindy: I'm so very sorry that your friend is now experiencing gall bladder trouble. Such a tragedy after all she's going through.
ANNETTE loved your pic. Remember being in Arizona and seeing those magnificent giant Cacti for real. Very impressive. Looking forward to seeing a pic of your new fountain although it will be a while yet.
LINDY sorry about your friend, as if she hasn't enough to deal with
Diane it's amazing work they've done with the mummified body.
Dibnlib I love meetkats and they always make me smile!
Break over, better get back to the HW.
G’ Morning all. Wet and windy – what else? Not going to morning church –“big communion” – too formal for us, so shall go to the smaller evening communion in the church hall. Have planting jobs to finish in the greenhouse – and a bit of ironing to fill up the day.
Annette – thanks for starting our new week. How lovely to have a fountain for the garden and the birds – we haven’t taken our small water feature out of hibernation yet! Could have given you our BBQ – still haven’t even looked to see if it is still useable. We had a “discussion” about it last week – the cover ripped in the wind and OH was minded to get a new one, and I said that there was no need to cover something we don’t use! Sore point, because it was bought to celebrate his retirement and as a way he could share the cooking, but it just sits on the deck looking ugly! I liked your roadside plant photo – and blue sky.
Diane – yes, that site was very interesting. I do wonder whether he would have normally thrown another skin around his body when he went out? The birds in that photo were Guinea Fowl. We heard Peacocks calling, but didn’t see them. More expectedly, we saw Ducks and Moorhen (both with chicks) and lots of Greylag Geese – mostly in pairs.
Goose nest on small island (she decided to stretch her wing, but this is the best shot of him):
Geese – by OH:
Mr Goose:
Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
Another week already! - It will soon be June, so then I decide its really summer, and take off the cuddly sheets on our bed. Dare I put some of my warmer sweaters away?
Thanks to Annette for starting us off once again. A lovely pic, how dramatic - and we don't mind what size they are, Annette. I too, look forward to seeing your new fountain once installed.
Diane: Saw a programme about the Copper Age Man on TV once - its a fascinating story. These new pics are interesting though: we didn't have those before. He must have been a tough guy, or else there was not so much snow there, then - mind you, he was preserved by the cold so I suppose it must have been. Sorry, rambling again. We have had a preserved man here, he was found in a sort of bog - see ' Lindow Man' on the Google. (think I mentioned it once before here) Not as old, though.
Alan: Lovely pic of the Tufted Duck. I'm sure you and Hamish enjoyed holding the fort alone yesterday, while Lady P went shopping. Needless to say, my OH is disappointed about the result of the Man U. match, but was not surprised.
Thanks to All who have expressed sympathy for my Friend - she has had a lot of bad health over the last few years, as she also has a bad heart, so was told once to lose weight, 'or else' - she lost over 4 stone! She is a very determined and organised person, though, and will not let things beat her, so is going along with her life just the same & hates being treated as if she's any kind of invalid. She has hated having to ask her OH to drive her everywhere for the past few weeks, but hopes to get back into her car in about 10 days from now. She is looking forward to her cruise in July (they are off to Novia Scotia) and next year her daughter gets married in April, so those are targets she has to look forward to.
Damp again here today, but we hope to get out into the garden and put in some of the bedding plants, as they are really crying out to get out of their pots now.
Have a nice Sunday, and a good Bank Holiday tomorrow.
Hi OG - you came on whilst I was rambling away, above. And now I recall that I've not mentioned your lovely photos of the rhodedendrons etc., they are lovely. Also like the new pics, such smart geese! and the last one has a lovely reflection in the water.
