I have decided to start this thread for discussing technical issues that come up rather than messing up the other threads.
I guess the first issue seems to be pasting Word text into posting boxes.
Recently we have had three threads lockup up as a result of posts involving Word text.
Tiger Signature
Yes Tiger its 5 years old now, so definitely looks like I will need a new computer, don't mind that but its just that so many bought programs that are all for XP, and so many files backed up that will probably be no good. Oh well go and see if OH has managed to do anything with it but I doubt it.

Programmes for XP will probably run on Windows 7
I think that you now probably need to stop because the last thing you want to happen is crash the hard drive. Even if you were to crash the hard drive the data can be got back but we are then talking serious money like £500
While your hard drive is working I feel sure that the data can be got off it. Getting the data saved is the big priority.
I must be away now. I think everone should ask themselves "If my computer and all my gear was stolen, or burned in a fire, would my data be safe?"
Tiger - looks like its completely given up the ghost now, as it wont even get as far as desktop. A message comes up that is scrolled off the top of the screen which we cannot read then this
Windows root>\System32\ntoskral.exe
Please reinstall a copy of the above file.
We have no discs to reinstall, so will try and find out what this file is on line. Looks like we will have to accept that all is lost. Got all photos and majority of files backed up, favourites so now its looking for a new computer, all that we have looked at have Windows 8, so I wonder if my programs would run on that OS. As you keep saying it is very important to back up ALL files.
Interestingly just after I wrote that message above I went out the door and something fell to the ground. It was the memory stick containing my backups.
Nowadays I use a memory stick as my hard drive. This has the advantage that if someting goes wrong with the computer I just unplug the memory stick.
Only drawback is that you cannot get the data back should the stick crash. However since the stick is backed up once a day to the cloud that should deal with that.
Mary and Tiger this is all above my head but it sounds Mary like you have got the most important things backed up. I lost everything when my old computer crashed and definately an eye opener for me. I do not have so much to lose now but to lose so much before was heartbraking.

You have no idea how often I have seen people lose years of data. Hope you back up your data now. Nowadays you can keep most of your data on a memory stick. Failing that you can get a 1TB external hard drive. Nowadays they cost a lot less than £100.
Tiger/B&B - I have a portable external hard drive with a large capacity, I had almost a mirror copy of my computer backed up to this, but I know some files will have slipped through, however I have just looked at the portable hard drive and I can see that most things are covered, even all my music files which I thought I had lost, that external drive is the best thing I have ever bought, and worth every penny. Yesterday before it completely crashed, I managed to back up all my emails to it, and I had forgot all about having a Netbook that runs Outlook Express, so this evening I have been retreiving all my email folders to the Netbook so I havent lost any of them either.
So at least almost all data has been saved, my only worry now is getting my old files to work on a new Operating System as I use a couple of different programs for designing, which I know my files will not work with a new version, as I already bought a newer version of Software and my files would not work with it,. I will find a way round it as they are still there and also have the laptop to fall back on as well. Now the next thing is where do we go for a new computer, specialised shops are few and far between these days, what we are left with is the usual chainstore (you know the one (PC).... any suggestions would be appreciated. For instance Tiger /Chloe/Kate2/Scylla/Doggie - where would you go if you had to start all over again.
Mary Good that most of the data is safe. One operating system that I think you should consider is Windows 7 professional. I understand that you can run virtual XP on this and that would ensure that you could use your old programmes.
Mind you I have not done this but I understand it can be done.
Well if I wanted a new PC tomorrow I would get my Fixit man to build it for me as he did this one 13 months ago. However that is not a lot of good to you.
