I have decided to start this thread for discussing technical issues that come up rather than messing up the other threads.
I guess the first issue seems to be pasting Word text into posting boxes.
Recently we have had three threads lockup up as a result of posts involving Word text.

Thanks to everyone again for all your help, so much appreciated. Will have another go before bed, wont give up as too much at stake to lose.

Clearly there are errors on the disk but they may be fixable.
You really need to try and run it outside Windows.
When you turn off the computer by pulling the plug, do you not get a different options screen when you turn it on again?

The data on the disk is recoverable for DEFINITE. Just do not throw it in the bin as I have seen so many people do.
One suggestion
Click <start> (or does it freeze even if you click start?)
Then click Run
Type cmd
File segment unreadable

[/quote]Wise words Tiger and I did when I moved here and about a year later my pc crashed. I went and bought a new PC. Only after I realised just how much I had lost of my memories and life and really special friends. Some I have got back but others not. Some pics irreplacable.
Pehaps the computer will be more amenable after a rest. I am sure you humans will appreciate a break too! :)
ChloeB & Tiger's Osprey Data
I did read you cannot destroy a hard disk. All the info is always there even if deleted. A hard disk is very strong and very difficult to destroy even with malice. Maybe wrong but amazing that you can delete files but they can still be discovered
You can take out the HDD, drill holes in it or smack it with a sledge hammer B&B :)

Yes data is irreplaceable. I keep mine in various places but nowadays it can be kept on a memory stick in my pocket.
Last May I was preparing my computer for going on holiday and I was backing up my data to a memory stick. It was late at night and somehow I misunderstood when the computer asked me if I wanted to delete all my 2012 data. I thought it was talking about the copy on the memory stick so I said YES. Then the full horror of what I had done descended on me having realised I had deleted all data from 1st January 2012.
I immediately went to the cloud and found a copy there which was about 48 hours old. Then I realised I had made a copy that was only 24 hours old so I could relax. At least I know the full horror of losing one's data.
It is a tough lesson.
Oh something else. Start a new data store each year. Structure it so that it is easy to copy.
