Technical Test Thread

I have decided to start this thread for discussing technical issues that come up rather than messing up the other threads.

I guess the first issue seems to be pasting Word text into posting boxes.

Recently we have had three threads lockup up as a result of posts involving Word text.

  • I have tried twice to get an extract of this info below, saved on my profile, in the signature box. But the website keeps coming up with a 'validation error'. I want to keep the html link that is there already, but I suspect that may be causing the problem. Any ideas?

I shall try putting the text, above the html, as up to now I have been putting it after it.

    LG

The current twice weekly data checks will continue to the end of October, thereafter, through the winter, the data-download regime switches to weekly.

    DYFI

    Oct 30 - Nov 30, every 4 days

    Dec 1- Mar 15, every 6 days

    SWT

Another possibility is that the transmission may have switched from a four to six day cycle. This was not due to happen until the end of the month but can apparently sometimes occur ahead of schedule due to a programming error.

RD (Highland Foundation for Wildlife) Ad hoc blogs, not sure at present of Argos winter schedule, probably weekly.

How is your computer now Cirrus? Did you manage to sort out what was causing the problem?

Thanks so much for your concern CHLOE - it does feel good to have others care about one's problems.

Scylla was instrumental in  giving me a link to the Dell site where I could find out about doing a self test on my monitor. I discovered my monitor was working correctly so then, there was no reason why it wouldn't shut off. I finally thought to look at the monitor menu. Couldn't understand  why the arrow keys wouldn't work  to navigate me up and down the menu !!!   a hem ... then thought to use the plus and minus buttons. Once I'd done that, of course, I realised that at some point without being aware of what I had done, I had actually locked the moniter. Took me a couple of goes to 'unlock' it cos there was no helpful dialog box to say ''unlocked''   or even ''ok''.  But that was it . Once unlocked the monitor button went from green to amber and I could shut it off.

DOGGIE - thanks once more for your support too. And SCYLLA  :)

  • Goodness, CIRRUS,  so glad you found out what it was!  I didn't comment because I can't help at all with techie things.

Have sometimes pressed the plus & minus on my monitor without knowing what I was doing.

  • Talking of pressing button without knowing it - I'm very light-fingered and can slip from one key to another.

Anyway, I was typing away and suddenly the Enter key wouldn't work - nor the Tab key and maybe others I didn't test.  In the end I phoned Dell and they said I'd have to have a new keyboard, they insisted it wasn't possible for me to have done it with a typo.  New keyboard fitted by handsome young engineer, who had to take the laptop to pieces (wonderful, Dell's next business day service), and a few days later I did exactly the same again :o  This time I had the sense to reboot (having not allowed panic to take over this time) and that fixed it, haven't done it since.

So if it ever happens to you... ;-)
