Technical Test Thread

I have decided to start this thread for discussing technical issues that come up rather than messing up the other threads.

I guess the first issue seems to be pasting Word text into posting boxes.

Recently we have had three threads lockup up as a result of posts involving Word text.

Two antivirus programmes Sandra? I always thought it was not advisable to have more than one installed.

You should not have two antivirus programmes. Otherwise they fight each other.

  • Yes that is what I always understood Tiger and they are less efficient because of it.

  • Adding my twopenneth...

    Agree only one AV.

Malaware bytes perfectly satisfactory Free Version and DO NOT run it in safe Mode.

Super anti spyware Free edition as a follow up.

CCleaner on a daily basis before shutdown.

No one AV will pick up everything, so a bit of extra ammunition always helps..

    ......................................................

ChloeB /Tiger ,remember our Posh link saga :):)(No lets not go there again:)

( but just a note to say)

As I run Vista, am just  RT clicking and posting direct into message on Forum.

(i.e. am not saving it to clipboard or where ever).

  • Keith and Kate2 I am giving Malwarebytes a whirl instead of my usual Ad-aware. MSE does give malware protection as well as antivirus but I always like to have extra cover.

Kate, not sure what you mean when you say 'just RT clicking and posting direct into message'. Right clicking and doing what? If you are pasting then you have already saved (copied) something.

  • Comfortingly, Malwarebytes found nothing malicious on scan so I must be doing something right :)

  • Chloe.

The technician that cleared my comp added AVG. They are working fine together.

I need to touch wood now!!!!

If nothing goes right, go left! :-)

  • I am very surprised at that. Not something I would do myself. So when your pc got the virus you only had MSE installed?

    Hmm agree does seem strange..

Also it is amazing how many do not make a backup, and then are dismayed if a virus sneaks in they lose everything, all those valuable photos etc.

Here is a good free,(as recommended by several Geeks) backup,if anything happens you can then do a complete factory re install, insert your backup and within minutes you are back running with no valuable data lost and no costly charges.....

Free Backup   Do take time to read through before you rush in :):)

  • Yes, very much agree with you Kate. I back up all my stuff to external hard drives.

  • Yes backing up your data is so important. The thing is that storage is now so cheap that thee is no reason not to.

However there are ways to make backing up data so much easier.

Come 1st January 2013 I will be making a new folder  TigerData2013. I will put all my new data into that. This will then be very easy to back up.

Also there is no point in having your backups sitting beside your computer. What if there is a fire or a burglar steals your coputers backups and all.

The safest place to keep your backups is in the "cloud". That way even if the worst comes to the worst your data should be safe.

My systems backs up my 2012 folder to the cloud daily.

However memory sticks are now very cheap. You can by 8GB sticks for about £10 these days.

Thus it isvery easy to carry a copy of your data in your pocket.

Just before I went on holiday back in May I got the fright of my life. I somehow by accident deleted my 2012 data folder. I really had that wave of terror. I immediately went to look in the cloud for that backup.

Yes backing up is one thing but checking you can retrieve when needed is quite another. Anyway for some reason the backup in the cloud was 48 hours old. Then I realised that I had a back on a stick from 24 hours earlier. I checked this and found that it was coplete except for one file I created that day. I was very relieved.

So the question you got to ask yourself is "What happens if I lose MY DATA NOW?
