Technical Test Thread

I have decided to start this thread for discussing technical issues that come up rather than messing up the other threads.

I guess the first issue seems to be pasting Word text into posting boxes.

Recently we have had three threads lockup up as a result of posts involving Word text.

  • No. I presume what scylla meant was some of these dowloads include 'extras' you might not want ie, the one she posted must have McAfee with it, hence her advising to untick the box if you don't want to install it. In your case you already have it anyway.

Have you got both the latest versions of Flashplayer and Flashplayer ActiveX installed?

    UNTICK McAfee !!!

I like to download direct wherever possible - you never know what some of these other sites (barring a few trusted ones) may be offering you in reality.

Indeed! I SO remember the Babylon tool bar and search box - how aptly named  and twice as insidious.

There are 'bits' still lurking at unknown places - one just can't get rid of it all (and it doesn't uninstall even with Revo)

  • Yes Cirrus it is really irritating. Some things just won't download unless you allow these extras to install.

  • I will always have an aversion to McAfee. I used to surf the internet without a virus checker would you believe. Anyway I eventually decided to get one and I bought what I thought was the best in Dr Solomons which cost £70. Then McAfee took over Solomons and I ended up getting a £25 product replacing a £70 one. I cannot remember how long I used it but it left bad memories. Mind you in those days the virus checkers were almost a virus themselves since they slowed down the PC so much.

  • Wendy have you got Javascript enabled in your browser? You need that as well as Flashplayer.

If you are not sure then go HERE to find out. It is easy enough to enable in 'Internet Options' if you haven't and that site will show you how.

EDITED to say that I disabled Javascript in my browser to check and it sent webpages a bit haywire so I reckon if you didn't have it enabled you would find other odd things happening too.

  • Out of interest. Just switched on my older desktop running Win7 32-bit. Tried to play an embedded video in IE9 and found I had the same problem as Wendy - white screen. The solution turned out to be very simple.

I have Flashplayer installed and all else seemed ok so I did a Google and found this fix which worked a treat.

Go to Tools > Internet Options then open Advanced tab

Select the box in Accelerated graphics that says 'use software rendering instead of GPU rendering' then apply and ok it. Close and reopen browser.

    Worth a try.

Interestingly, I don't need to do that with the 64-bit machines + 64-bit IE9 and would love to know why.

  • Further update on the above. I had Flash Player 10 ActiveX installed on my 32-bit machine, I upgraded to Flash Player 11 activeX and it worked fine. Was then able to deselect the accelerated graphics box, as above and the embedded video still plays.

In the end, it all boiled down to Flash Player not functioning properly so if you are having similar problems it might be an idea to try uninstall/reinstall before doing anything else.

  • Have you got things sorted yet Wendy? Did you try what I suggested?

  • Hi Chloe - just catching up with things again - will have a good look this afternoon/evening when I have more time to myself - still trying to get bedroom finished and 'Man' has pulled a sickie!!!

  • Amazon, ordering with 'one-click', just a word of warning. Yesterday, I was logged on to my Amazon account and ordered a 2 packs of phone rechargeable batteries and I did the 'one-click' to order.....then it said "You have to be logged on to use one click' and gave me a log on box, which I clicked, then I clicked the 'one-click' again.....you probably have already guessed what happened today.....I have two emails, for two orders....4 packs, each with 4 batteries....16 batteries in total...enough for 8 Panasonic phones. Fortunately I have four handsets, so the rest will have to be used for my mice....of the computer variety!! :o)
