Technical Test Thread

I have decided to start this thread for discussing technical issues that come up rather than messing up the other threads.

I guess the first issue seems to be pasting Word text into posting boxes.

Recently we have had three threads lockup up as a result of posts involving Word text.

Great stuff it worked in a sort of a way, dont think my computer is liking Google this morning, as when I clicked on images nothing happened, so just did a search in normal way, and got some results, but then kept getting redirection notices from Bird Guides, but did find 3 images of her, two when getting ringed and tagged and a nice one when she was migrating.    Thank You!

This is part of what I get

Now can you recognise that bird in the top left hand corner?

  • Yep thats what I got - good!!!    So are you using Google to search for all things on the forum?   Don't know why but I wouldnt have thought of that!  Thinking it couldnt be narrowed down enough to bring up relevant information.

No I use different things at different times. I try things and see what works.

If I know it is here on RSPB I try that first.

Searching is all about  homing in on what you want to find. Choosing the right word or combination of words is everything.

Well using images is very powerful because you can see at a glance what you are looking for. You said you were looking for an image of Nethy. Now you will know what Nethy looks like.

You can now try the same technique with other ospreys.

  • So say for instance I was looking for a discussion that I knew took place on the Gabfest or it could be any other thread for that matter - like I posted once on another thread on the main index a few months back but I tried to find it again but couldnt, it was a discussion about identifying a whimbrel which I had suggested the lady report its whereabouts to RSPB because I had already been in discussion with a guy who was asking for sightings in the magazine a while back - I tried searching for Whimbrel in the search box, but there were loads of results but none of them were the one I was looking for.  How could we narrow that down???

  • Mary I used a new word on RSPB yesterday and I was the first person ever to use it on this forum.

    It was hyperhagia

NB   No one will ever use it again as I spelt it wrong :)

So try searching for hyperhagia on RSPB and you should get only one result.

Yes I agree images is a powerful tool, I do use it all the time, in the results there was a lovely website blog from a the purply photo Bert Rowe's Bonnie Scotland, its a really nice account of his trip to LG.    I am very pleased that I found a photo of Nethy, she was before my time so its nice to see her, will put it in the Gone but not Forgotten thread now.   By the way I think she is still out there somewhere!

  • Mary  Now try the same technique on Deshar

  • No two results from Hyperhagia LOL - this one and the other one that you were discussing yesterday, but its not hyperhagia I am looking for Tiger, its a discussion about reporting a Whimbrel will go try again LOL

Yes but this is about "Searching technique"
