Morning all - a sunny, CALM morning here thank goodness. We survived the winds without damage .... a few battered plants and wind-scorched leaves, but they'll survive! Yesterday I went on a shopping mission to Tesco in North Shields, and on the way back I got stopped at some temporary traffic lights beside Cullercoats harbour. As I was sitting there, I noticed loads of sandmartins wheeling around and feeding. I must go back and investigate now that the weather has calmed down, because it looks like they are nesting in the cliffs.
Too many posts to reply to ... BUT ...
Diane - I read your post about your forthcoming storms ... I do hope you will be safe. As Cirrus said ... do try and let someone on here know that you are ok.
Alan - lovely pic of the clematis ... mine haven't been very good this year. Glad Hamish's paw is improving, even if it is slowly.
OG - more wonderful garden photographs ... I think my favourite is the Azaleas ... or maybe the eucalyptus with its wonderful bark. Tree bark has always fascinated me. I remember as a child, visiting the Botanical gardens in Dublin, and being intrigued with a Cork tree (I don't know its botanical name!).
Thanks to everyone for posts, pics etc
Take care ... especially those in the bad weather and those travelling!
Joan - avid bird and nature watcher in Northumberland!

When I think of unhatched eggs in an osprey nest I alway really this image from Bassenthwaite 2004 See here
This was also reported on the BBC. See Cumbrian Osprey Spotted in Norway.
Morning Everyone. Later than usual as have been seeing the Washing Machine Man (& his son!) - he has just got back from his hols in Portugal. They said totally different things about my machine (!!!) from the Man who came the other day, but the end result was the same - not worth spending money on, better to use that towards another machine.... we trust him as he is an Old Friend of my OH. So off to decide which new one to order <sigh>
Do hope that Diane is safe - how worrying that there have been such terrible events in the States, lost lives and so much damage to property. My heart goes out to those who have lost their homes.
Nice friendly photos around of the State Visit of Barack Obama and their meeting with the Queen, and subsequent State Dinner. He seems to have hit it off with our PM, too. Thought that Prince Philip looked very old and tired at the Dinner, but then he is nearly 90. Havn't seen the prog. about him on TV as recorded it to see later.
Joan Baez - my favourite has always been "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" just because its so tuneful - but I also have a corner in my heart for "What have They Done to the Rain" as it takes me back years and years (& years!).
More lovely pics from OG - what a lovely holiday you had. Like the Eucalyptus, and Thanks for the Poppy, OG!
Lovely Clematis from Alan. Glad that Hamish is making a recovery. They do like to worry us, these animals.
The ash cloud seems to have veered away from the UK somewhat, thank goodness. We await events on that score. (Hope that our margo will still be able to fly up to LG later on)
Congrats to Tiger on his 12 years anniversary ! what a long time!
Sorry to those not mentioned, too many posts these days! do enjoy reading them all, though.
Lindybird I wish you or indeed anyone would explain to me the meaning behind "The Night They Drove Old Dixy Down" I know it is something about the differences between the railways in the north and the south during the American Civil War. But what exactly it is about I do not know. Apparently Joan Baez did not know either!
OK That's one question answered :) Happy FORUMS birthday Tiger
and finally I caught the posts! What a diary you keep Tiger :)
I too was a fan of some of Joan Baez music. My maiden name was 'Byers' so when I said that my name was 'Joan Byers' ... I used to get some very strange looks and funny comments .... particularly at College, where I was studying Music!!

Tiger I always thought it referred to them 'driving down' or crushing Dixie ie the South, by tearing up parts of the main railway line to the South to prevent supplies and reinforcements getting through in the latter days of the war.
Now I can boast that I'm in regular contact with Joan Byers, then, Joan!!
Havn't got the faintest as to what the words to the song mean, Tiger, I just liked the tune ;-)
Over the last few days, with the high winds, we have been enjoying a spectacle out of our windows - the fields at the back have been planted with Barley, which is moving in very fascinating and graceful ways in the wind - rather like watching the sea. Only wish I could capture it in a photo, but that doesnt work.
