Daily Update??? Monday August 30, 2009

EVERYONE: I've posted this on the LG Diary page also:

Does anyone have any constructive feedback as to the continued usefulness of the Daily Update page, which has been a great place to post photos of the birds and help with identifications and comparisons, etc. Now they're gone, I was planning to continue with it for the near future to see how it evolves. Obviously, anyone who wants to can start it off; I've done it only because I'm typically logging on to watch the birds long after you guys have quit for the night, so no worries there either way. I'm working on the assumption that Richard will continue to use this page (the Diary) to keep us informed regarding Mallachie's and Rothes' progress, at least for the time being and that he will advise us of any upcoming changes (closing down of camera, etc.)

I apologize if I'm being premature about all this, but I probably won't be on as late as in the recent past.

    Hi Annette

If the procedure is the same as last year this the Diary Page will be shut down.

I think that is why they gave us the DU and LG Group sites so that we could keep in touch.

Richard's reports will be posted on GE Home page.

    Hope this answers you question.

So, Mallachie finally 'decided' to go, at least we can see her and Rothes progress. I wish that MY wee Garten had been given a 'backpack'. I shall wonder forever how she is getting on.

    "Birds of a Feather".... ~( :o )

  • It seems sensible to continue, as long as you are happy to do so, Annette. As Maureen says, its possible the blog page will close down anyway. It could evolve into a place of contact when not the 'osprey watching season', anyway, and someone else could always start each day if you are not available.

  • MAUREEN:   I'm sure Garten will be fine:  she is one tough little cookie, as they say in the films! Don't forget she has a leg ring, so may be spotted one day back in Scotland and anyway, I'm sure if we can be patient & wait for her to mature, one day we may be ooohing at her little chicks on a nest somewhere. Would'nt that be great!! Full circle!!

  • Hi Annette,

Thank you so much for initiating this 'Daily Update'.  It really gave us a sensible place to post real information, pictures and more general 'blitherings'.  As for continuing it from now on?  Gee, I don't know!  I suppose while the youngsters are actively migrating it will be very useful to exchange thoughts and comments on the day's progress, but I dn't see it being nearly as active as it has been until now.  It is your initiative though, and you are the one who will have the best idea of when to slow or cease.  We just don't want it to become a burden to you.  Most of us are quite capable of starting  a new thread if we have something pertinent to say.  I'm sure the Group will continue to be active until next year's ospreys are back, but I expect it will be more general stuff.  I'd suggest you play it be ear and we'll be more than happy with whatever you do.

    Love, Jan.

    Smiles, Jan.

  • Like Maureen, I miss my wee Garten too. It`s a pity we are not able to track her route. Well, we have Rothes and Mallachie to follow and I hope they'll get to their winter place safe and sound. As far as this site is concerned, I think it is a good idea to keep it open as long as you are all happy with it, especially Annette and the people from the other side of the globe who have been so helpful updating when we were all asleep! Meanwhile, we have GE to check daily. Good night!

  • I'm probably going to have a completely different opinion to most but we set up the Daily Updates to give a running commentary on what we were seeing on the webcam....and I think it worked brilliantly. The webcam will shortly stop (well, forcus on the feeders I believe) and, in my opinion, the updates as such should stop until EJ returns to the nest next March. There is of course absolutely no reason why other threads can't be started for chatting amongst ourselves. I personally would prefer to keep the update threads for what we set them up for. Whatever is decided I am extremely grateful to Annette for setting them up each day. I haven't been able to contribute the last couple of weeks as I returned back to work after considerable time off work sick.

I will also add here....this is my own opinion and I'm not taking sides with anyone.

Make the most of today because, unlike Sky+, there isn't a rewind button.

  • Wow. You guys are up late. Thanks for all thoughts!

Maybe not a daily update page but perhaps a daily chat to allow people to keep in touch who follow the ospreys who don't wish to join Loch Garten Bloggers on Facebook. Last year there was the facility to comment on the tracking dairy when a blog was posted with news but it wasn't updated frequently and if used for chat could become very messy as all on a single page.

Thank you very much Annette for starting the DU threads and watching the events on the nest when the rest of us are still in our beds.

  • On reflection and reading   comments above, maybe we should leave the Daily Update thread for updating on the nest and doings of chicks etc  so we all know where to come for that (and can more or less instantly get that updaate) and start a completely different thread for our 'chat' meantime.

Frankly, I'm confused about what should be used for what but think we should have a 'right' to chit and chat in with our comments about Ospreys. This site was obviously intended to cater for 'everybody', wasn't it?  I believe we should enjoy our 'new found friendships' with the important thing in common - Ospreys.

So, I'd like a clear indication that there is SOMEWHERE to reminisce, write poetry, hear about someone's pet, in with remarks about our favourite girls and nobody getting hurt please. As someone said, this site should be 'fun'.

    Hi Cirrus

Tiger set up this thread to follow Rothes and Mallachie which could be good to use to post comments about Google Earth and the news of the chicks

I do think that a more general chat forum is probably useful for everybody to keep in though and I know that over on Facebook the chatter thread has been extremely useful in supporting members through some difficult times.

However I do have a caveat on these forums- they are public- very public and you do not need to be a member to read through peoples' posts.  Extreme care has to be taken when putting information out on the internet. I for one am not keen on the whole world knowing everything that is going on in my life all the time. We are being told to make sure our children are safe on the net and the dangers of cyberbullying but that message is not getting through to some older users it seems.

There are plenty of Instant messaging sites for people to chat  in groups that are private and even facebook has a chat facility.
