How Will The Software Upgrade of 16th May Affect The Loch Garten Group?

As we know from the announcement today the software upgrade will take place from Monday 16th May.

I have decided to start a thread dedicated to discussing how these changes will affect our "Loch Garten Group".

It seems as if groups will cease to exist under the new system.

I guess we have to use the seven days we have to discuss the implications on the change on our community.

  • Hello everyone

I have just arrived home to read this announcement. It looks like it's a going to be a bit of a shake-up.

So am I getting this right, we will only be able to PM friends on our "friends" list? I assume we will still be able to make new friends though.

I only have a few but it seems like the maximum number of friends on people's profile page is 9. Is this correct?

Kelly  You only see 9 on other people's profiles. However if you go to your own page you can see all your friends if you click <view all friends> They are paginated 8 at a time.

That is great Annette. I sincerely hope that the new system preserves what has been built up here. It has never seemed more special than now.

    Tiger

Just got back from a few days away and have been catching up on all the news, including Graham Bird's announcement. Are you sure, you aren't being overly pessimistic about the future of the LG group, indeed Groups in General? I take it, your concern was triggered by this paragraph:

     New site structure

The new version organises the Community entirely by topic rather than splitting it between blogs, forums, galleries and groups. This is rather different to how things are today but it does make a lot more sense. The new Community will be organised into the following sections (subject to change):

    • Wildlife
    • Places to visit
    • Get involved
    • Our work
    • Local groups
    • Chat

However, this could be taken as referring only to the "high-level" structure of the Community, as accessed currently by the four buttons marked blogs/forums/galleries/groups, towards the top RH corner of the page.

Later on in his post, Graham lists the following new feature:

More than one forum/gallery/blog in a group

At the moment, Community Groups (such as Volunteering, Big Garden Birdwatch or Minsmere) are limited to one blog/forum/gallery each. This limit is lifted in the new version which means we can do much more with groups from now on.

This is relevant, as it confirms Groups will continue. Minsmere is a Group related to a Reserve, in the same way as LG. Further down the thread, in response to a question from you, Graham says:

     Hi Tiger,

All the existing forum threads will still be here, as will photos, blogs and groups.

Hope that helps put your mind at ease.

    :)

Has Graham actually said, somewhere I haven't seen yet, that groups will cease to exist?

  • Sue C   I see what you are saying. I cannot be sure of this but they seem to have enacted their (subject to change) option. Earlier in the week there was no mention of groups.

They do keep editing that announcement.

I guess we best wait and see.

  • The announcement said the  current URL's will not work after Monday the 16th. . Has any one told us how we will find the new URL's for the forums?

  • Barbara Jean,

From what they've said about URL's changing, I suspect it will be necessary to enter the new Community via the RSPB home page

Another thought - though Graham Bird has a Moderator badge, he works on the RSPB technical staff and is therefore talking about how the new site will function, not about how the RSPB wants it to be used. The actual Moderators have said nothing about that, as far as I can see, and presumably won't until the new system is up and running, when I suspect they will be pretty busy!

I suggest that if we can still identify a Loch Garten Group (perhaps under Places to Visit) , we make our way there and continue posting as we always have. If the Moderators wish us to post say, Chat, or material about ospreys not from LG, in some other place, we wait for them to tell us so, rather than guessing in advance.

    Does this make sense?
