Weekly Chat, Sunday, May 1 2011

Afternoon all: Geez. May already? This happens every year!

Sitting in garden with laptop! Under umbrella in shorts and trying to ID a pale pink hybrid rose I didn't think I'd bought but which is now blooming like mad. I went out to buy orange/apricot/peach and yellow roses and have no idea how this pale pink one got into the mix. Also, it doesn't have a little metal label, which the others do, and I'm wondering if it didn't get into the wrong bin at La Sumida, where I bought six bare roots. In the meantime, Amber Flower Carpet and Julia Child roses are doing brilliantly...  Met friends for breakfast this morning: Had a egg-white and seasonal veggie mix - won't make that mistake again! Very boring and challenging since nothing stayed on my fork. Was forced to rectify the situation with a cafe au lait and a boysenberry and lemon scone!

Diane: I have a visor and a sweathshirt with a hood that I wear on windy days at the whale count. That's it! Daughter has several cowboy hats, including one with a woven decorative band she made from hair taken from Cimarron's tail (the horse she had to put down Feb 10). I'll check out Trucker Steve next.

Alicat: Bet you had fun with Bobbie. Have you sorted your naughty OH yet? :-)

Wendy: Dolphin visit sounds like fun.

Sheila: Argh! Take care of that knee. Geez. A 1.5 hour wait for food? Did everyone complain loudly?  Apparently, several of our channels repeated the wedding video throughout the day yesterday; I'm watching the recording a bit at a time; can't stand to be inside on a lovely day.

OG: More fab azaleas! Good news that son is trying the part-time option; hope it works out for him. Really understand "more money than sense," which also applies to grandson who, sad to say, doesn't have much money, so .....! Still, he's young yet and as always, we live in hopes. Little vole looks awfully sweet.

Hallo also to Lynette. It's past 4; can now officially start new Weekly Chat!

  • So enjoyed ALL the birdie pics OG - so clear and detailed ! Thank you so much for sharing.

In case you visit Chat Valc:

Valc - is it BarbaraJean you are talking about. ? Thank you for letting us know. Lindy and I were discussing one day fans we hadn't heard from in a while but we couldn't remember all the names. I certainly hope someone with a Mac  can help her. Did you post on the official Blog?   More who post on that might have Macs.

  • We haven't seen any rain yet, although my son said that as we were talking on the phone, it was raining in London. He was off to play cricket so I gather the rain didn't last long. I played tennis this afternoon and the sun came out after a very cloudy morning. Very enjoyable, but as it was my first game of the year, I think I will pay for it tomorrow. Went to vote this morning. We also had a council election.

OG, That was bad luck with the fish. We used to have a water testing kit so that every time we changed some of the aquarium water, we would know which of the water feeds we would need to adjust the water.
You did extremely well capturing the ospreys. Loved your photographs.

AQ, I do enjoy reading about your trips. Though there is so much sadness looking at your photographs of deserted places and buildings. I always think of the people who were there, or who attended the school, and where they moved to.

Diane, I now have visions of you swinging through the trees on the thick tarzan vines. I love the sounds of your land. Our gardens would just not be right in your setting.

Annette, I get my computer back on Monday but yes, you are right, the housework, washing, ironing is now all up to date. The worst thing is, if I come on here before I start any HW, especially when the chicks have hatched, because a five minute nest view, can quickly become an hours viewing.

Tiger, Thanks for the link to the goslings fledging. I thought they would all wait until after all the eggs were hatched.

Linda, Don't think I should comment about getting yourself ready for the milkman !
I will know who to ask for tips on playing bowls. My OH was saying that they have three fellows in their late 20's who have joined our village club and seem to be very enthusiastic.  The club has it's own club house but no pub.

Alan, I will be thinking of Hamish and yourself  tomorrow.

Margo, Hope you have enjoyed your concert this evening. I am afraid my computer had major problems so was always going to take longer, but I did hope it was going to be quicker than two weeks. I was told that it is already ready but delivery won't be until Monday.

Cirrus, Do have a moan if you are feeling bad. I have been moaning about a cough and hay fever, which is obviously nothing compared with what you are suffering. You do so well, carrying on with your hiking.

  • OG wrote -Lynette – picture doesn’t’ say “Lady” to me – but not expert at ID of individuals!  Whoever it is, copyright will still belong to the artist or to SWT if he transferred it along with the image!!

Oh well, just have to leave it then, have acknowledged who took pic. No more will be posted.

Just love your captures of LOtL and of course the other birds whilst you were out and about.

  • Nice to hear Barbara Jean is around but unfortunately cannot get online due to her computer.  Hope she manages it soon and someone can help her solve the problem.

  • Just had to make a Birthday Card for OH to email his Brother for tomorrow!

G Daughter#1 has just made up her mind, on the final day, which university is her first choice.  She’s decided on York, with Edinburgh in reserve.  York was her original intention since she was about 14, so I wonder why they spent the last year making preliminary visits, interview visits and extra visits all around the UK!  She’s also rather pleased with her Grade Five keyboard result, which we didn’t even know she was doing (she’s only been playing seriously for about three years).

Cirrus – trying to catch up sending existing photos as we are having a few days break mid-month – just down to Portpatrick for Gardens in West Galloway.  I had no idea you had the problems you recently described – very brave of you to continue working and hiking.

Brenda – we vote by post, so got it out the way early!  How energetic of you, playing tennis – have you always done a lot of sport?  I was never that way inclined, just used to enjoy walking.  I think we had become lazy with water-testing for the fish.  The one which was looking “iffy” earlier died this afternoon, but the remaining three “new” ones look promising.

Must get to bed soon – church coffee morning tomorrow and a few other messages to do in town and at Tesco’s!  Good night, all.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • evening everyone. Had a busy mess around day today and TT had 2 baths/showers. Once she rolled in some deer scat and the other some rotting fish. She thought she smelled lovely!

Will catch up more tomorrow but wanted to say to Jane sorry about that circulation problem. Didn't know you'd been managing it for a while. Glad it doesn't stop you doing your hiking.

Nice to read lots of those that needed it had some rain. We had some but don't need it!

    Happy Friday everyone.

  • Annette - Hey, those pics aren’t my neighbourhood. They’re at least 90 miles from home!!!! Mostly places I've never been.

Cirrus - I wear compression panty hose on long plane trips to counter the dreaded deep vein thrombosis. Plus walk about as much as possible. As fpr galahs, they are common across most of Aussieland. Their harsh screech is deplored by many, but to me it brings back memories - an old abandoned home on my father’s farm was surrounded by gum trees crowded with galahs screeching & squabbling. Yes you will get pic of church! You may be sorry you asked LOL - no, I won’t bore you with all I snap!
The Methodist church & chapel, followed by one of the WWI windows.

Linda - Please drop in anytime. My ironing basket is awaiting you! I had ironed all my blouses ready to put away for winter and summer returned.

OG - As I drove down our street this morn, I can see they are replacing the kerbing for 2 driveways. Hm, were they missed in original assessment (they only patched gutters here & there) or was the "few-weeks-ago" work faulty?

Lynette - So many of our towns/localities have names from the "Old Country". Early emigrants named them for places they came from.

Margo - So glad that Billie has declared you & OH have passed your apprenticeship as cat-owners, er, cat-slaves. LOL

Gary - Spoilsport! After TT had taken all that trouble!!!

Finishing trip saga. We lunched at the Booborowie (lawn) bowling club. Local ladies & men did us proud. Soup (cream of cauli or veg), buttered French sticks. Table in centre of room laden with a dozen casserole dishes - shepherds pie, meatballs, sweet & sour, lasagne, etc, etc, rice, plus simple salad. Enough for seconds for those in need. Apple crumble, cream & i/cream. Tea, coffee. I slipped out before latter to photo a church just in walking distance. EDIT - St Dymphna's Catholic church.

Next stop a Gaelic Cemetery a few miles from Spalding. Half a dozen fenced sites and only 2 surviving headstones . . . . and half a dozen sheep.

Pipelines taking water from River Murray to rural communities.

We had 15 mins in Spalding then headed towards home. Govt planned the town of Goyder in 1800s but it never developed, just the Anglican church, St Mary of Bethany.

Pit stop in Balaklava. Sun pm only one cafe in the town open but well organised - one took orders, second made coffee/tea, third delivered to counter. Then express return to Adelaide. A very enjoyable day. I was pleased that although I pushed myself with some extra walking, my knees were OK next day. A good omen for overseas, yikes, I leave in less than 3 weeks!!!!!!!!

  • Friday Smile
Some unusual spellings of children’s names (or perhaps these are normal and I’m old-fashioned?)
    Jaxscyn
    La-a
    Cyndee
    Ky-a
    Zaveyr
    Jaijmz

    SPOILER ALERT.
In case you don’t know (I didn’t), La-a is pronounced Ladasha, Ky-a is Kydasha.

  • Evening all: Nice breakfast with daughter; then another busy day (though did find time for a little nap in the garden). Thanks for letting us know that Barbara Jean is okay - hope someone can help her with her Mac.  Lots to catch up on, so sorry in advance if I miss acknowledging folks.

Lindybird: Sounds smart for your friend to hire a cleaner; how nice that the neighbors have come through with pies and goodies. Oh I hate it when I walk around with spinach stuck on my front tooth, etc., and nobody tells me. :-))

OG: Never heard of a home delivery ironing service. Fabulous photo of Mr. Pheasant. Oh that's too bad you felt uncomfortable at LOTL; what a shame and from what Wendy says, you're not the ohly one. I wonder what happened....  Lucky g/daughter, off to Uni.

    SheilaFE: Awful about that eagle.

QW: Thanks for posting the question about the sound at LG.

Cirrus: Maybe all of us on the blog can rustle up an eligible bachelor birder for you to consider! :-) So sorry you have to wear those pesky hose; must be uncomfortable in the summer.

Lynette: Aha! It's your OH I "loaned" to Cirrus; hope he has good luck with that procedure.

Margobird: Yes, busy, but am pacing myself pretty well. A milk specially formulated for cats? Can't believe the things I learn on this blog.

BrendaH: I daren't look in on the cam or the blog first thing in the morning or I'd never get anything done.

AQ: Well, from thousands and thousands of miles away, 90 miles is close enough to your neighborhood.

Off to bed; take care all.

  • Morning Everyone:  Cloudy here and dull.  Lots of noise from next door, where our new neighbour is having the garage (in close proximity to our garage at the side of the house) converted into a study room.  His garage is part of the house, so they can punch a hole in the wall from the hallway and make it into a room to give him more space on the ground floor (he is partly disabled). The builders apologised for the noise and mess yesterday, but said it would all be finished soon - they are certainly getting on with the job fast.

AQ:  I really can't believe those awful names!!  Thanks for more great pictures of your travels.

OG:  Nice that your cleaner seems to be alright.  Hope you have a good relationship in the future (it does make a difference).  Crossing my fingers for your fish!

Gary:  Dogs do what dogs do!  - must be a lot cleaner now!

Hope that Barbara Jean can come back to us soon.

Must go and crack on, lots to do today.  Have a good Friday, All.
