Weekly Chat, Sunday April 3 2011

Hi all: very late starting this - was gone most of the day. I saw Odin on the nest - brilliant!  Now off to check on Lady and, hopefully, catch up on chat!

  • Morning all.

Lynette hope all goes well with your OH and Linda, great verse.

Sheila hope you manage to get your broadband sorted out soon.

  • Thanks ChloeB, but we are at the end of telephone line which comes underground for over 1.5 miles, and until our local exchange has an up-grade....  I just have to keep trying, and not comment too much for fear of putting my foot in it again!

  • Afternoon all,

Been having great difficulty getting on here today.

Linda : Excellent poem as always.

Lynette: Sorry that your OH had to be admitted to the hospital.

SheilaFE : Its a pity that your broadband was playing up just as Odin returned.

Margo: I was thinking how pleased you would be that Odin had returned.

Everyone else thanks for the chat and pics.

    HAPPY MOTHERS DAY.

  • Sunday all! And happy Mother’s Day to UK mums

Linda, what a brilliant verse again!

Lynnette, so sorry to hear your OH’s health problems, thinking of you both

SheilaFE, hope your computer/connection starts to behave!

    Have a good day all!

PS. The cam (still, not streaming) near me started today - don’t mean anybody needs another cam to watch LOL, but if you like to check the weather here…. Osps returned to this nest April 12th last year

  • Lynette sorry about your OH, hope he's soon better.

Well I knew the big arrival would be on Saturday and I'd miss it.  Soooo glad he's back safe.  It certainly doesn't take long for them to get down to business!

Had a fantastic time seeing Kylie. She puts on such a spectacular show, truly amazing.

Unfortunately we came across a dog wandering near the main road about a mile from home on the way back at nearly 1am.  No sign of anyone with it and it readily came to us and jumped in the car.  We went to the police station who apparently don't take in missing dogs any more.  They gave us the number for the emergency out of hours dog wardens.  We came home and OH went out again to see if anyone was out looking or calling for the dog but no sign.  I left a message on the answer machine of the number we were given.  Fortunately Mia was away for the night being looked after so we settled the dog in the kitchen with blankets and went to bed.  However, after a few minutes he started whining and wimpering.  So the night passed very slowly with one or other of us going downstairs to talk to him and settle him down only for it all to be repeated about 15 mins later.  I sat at the kitchen table about 4.30 I think, rang the wardens and left another message and rang the police who had not had any reports that anyone was missing him.  I sat at the table napping for a while.  Next turn was OH who actually resorted to crashing out on the kitchen floor.  As long as one of us was in the room the dog was happy and settled down.  Anyway after a very long exhausting night the warden phoned early this morning and we handed him over.  I hope he will be claimed, he was a lovely natured dog.  Apparently if not claimed after I think 7 days he will be put up for re-homing.

Mia's been patroling the garden - thinking who's been trespassing in MY garden!

  • Morning all: Happy Mum's Day to all in UK (U.S. celebrates in May).

Lindybird: After the upsetting day yesterday, sounds like a good follow up to visit Sweetpea (and those two other people!)  :-)

Lynette: Do let us know how OH is doing?  Hugs to you.

Sheila: Did you see the video of Odin's return? It's at  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BP3811e9Ng

  • Way, hay,  Webcam worked briefly and this is what I caught!!

Odin was happy with his efforts and flew away.

Thanks Annette I found a clip on the main blog.  But your link reminds me I must file it for posterity - I assume I can?

  • Oh Lindy, I’ve just started a new document “Osprey Poems 2011”, lovely, thank you!

Hugs to Lynette, re OH health problems.  Sheila, I'm sure if someone puts a link then you can save it to your own computer.

Well I went to be inducted (?) at Whinlatter today. Six new volunteers were there and we were guided gently through what goes on and how to enthuse people (be enthusiastic!) etc.  Mr No-ring turned up today and they were mating in a nearby tree but hadn’t been on the nest at all, I was expecting them to be bringing treetrunks in like EJ.  I will be there in two weeks on Saturday and the following Friday and Saturday, and I am hoping to get some night shifts too.  The rotas are only done a few weeks ahead and then I am away for two weeks in May, so probably won’t do much until June.  As I was driving down just after 9 I’m fairly certain I saw her fly across as I waited at the junction with the main road west of Bassenthwaite, definitely white underneath so not a buzzard.  All the times I’ve gone out looking elsewhere than the nest and I’ve never seen one : ))   Afterwards I went up to Dodd and introduced myself and asked to be shown how to work the telescopes, while it was quiet.  There were quite a few people about but not loads.  Yippee! I’m getting excited now!

  • TerryM  It sounds as though you had an exciting 'induction' today. Wonderful to actually see an osprey in the 'flesh' so to speak, away from the reserve.  The only time I have seen one like that was in Rothiemurchas Forest, and initially I though it was a large gull, but quickly realised I was spotting my first real osprey and like you was delighted!!  How could you fail to be 'enthusiastic' with these wonderful birds around!  From what you say I take it you are on visitor duty as a volunteer, but I guess the night shift will be watching the nest in earnest.  Have a wonderful time in two weeks and let us know how you get on.... please!

EJ is soliciting on the nest at present (...**??? web cam gone again), I hope Odin can find the fish in these winds.

We are just getting our first downpour in weeks.  The garden is crying out for it!

Edit:  well that was short lived, downpour is reduced to a drizzle.

  • Of course I'll let you know how it goes, Sheila.  Your rain must be the little shower we had about 2.30, it's been quite nice here today (and yesterday) after Friday's dreich morning.
