Weekly Chat, Sunday March 20, 2011

Evening/Morning all: Another week! This keeps happening. Checked out the sky tonight but no moon, just more low cloud and rain. Went to Botanic Garden with friend for putter today and got rained on. Two years ago the Garden was severely damaged in the Jesusita Fire and even though you can see the charred lower trunks of the trees, the tops appear to be thriving and the ground below the trees is jammed with new growth, mainly cheerful Canyon sunflowers in full bloom. An amazing sight so soon after such a destructive fire.  On another note, granddaughter, baby, and OH now home and a bit anxious about being "alone" with tiny person, though daughter has been there most of the day.

ChrisyB: Hi there. Don't worry about keeping up - I think it's going to get harder for everyone. Good that the owls are safe and cared for.

Margobird: My sister and her OH went to Malta one year to get some sun and ran into the worst winter storm the island had for years. During the gale, the French doors on the balcony of their hotel room blew open and shattered and rain poured in, then the power went out. Definitely not the "cruise" they signed up for!

jsb: I did as you suggested and - hey presto! - there's the nest. Thank you so much! Thing is, I still can't see it on the RSPB's Loch Garten Live page. Have looked at all kinds of dialog boxes and can't ID which box I should check or un-check. It's all so complicated.

SheilaFE: Welcome back! Hope you had a great time.

Chloe: That's a lovely shot of the moon, regardless of its perigee-ness!

Alan: Amazing shots of Mr. and Mrs. Eagle feeding their kiddies. They must've been to parenting classes.

Gary: Hectic eh? I can only imagine! (I have a photo of my grandson at age 9 months fast asleep under a chair after a busy afternoon exploring the living room).

patriciat: New little girl has very "big" name of Delilah Grace. Not sure how I feel about that - the only Delilah I know of had a boyfriend called Samson and their relationship was more than a little dysfunctional, Still, yet another opportunity to be flexible and keep my mouth shut. :-)

Very heavy rain forecast for tomorrow; in a way that would be good, since I have lots of things to sort through to either sell or send to local charity groups and hate to be indoors when the sun is out.

Who knows what the next week will bring?  :-)

  • From Annette:
AQ:  You must visit one of these high-rises and wave a large red hanky toward the cam!!
      http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/news_media/webcams.asp  (Looks hot there.)
    From Diane
AQ: Annette's right. Wave on top of one of those buildings so we can see you! We need an AQ cam. :-)

So, Adelaide has webcams!!!!! Wonders will never cease! Pretty boring views though. I don’t recognise the city buildings since I do not, as a regular occurrence, leap across them. The so-called Adelaide Oval cam must be located on North Terrace looking north. The big white roof is the Festival Theatre complex. Left foreground is the old railway station, now casino. The 4 towers back left are the light towers for the said Adelaide Oval. Green swathe of parklands beyond. Now as soon as I find my red hanky and manage to scale one of those light poles, I shall wave to you all.

The view of the Outer Harbor breakwater will be more interesting when a cruise ship comes in. Recently Queen Mary & a smaller ship called for 3 hours on a Sunday morn, causing the powers-that-be to allow Rundle Mall (city) shops to open 2 hours early. The power of the dollar.

The webcam of Granite Island is at Victor Harbor, 50 miles south of city. The island has a colony of fairy penguins. Alas, the numbers have dropped from 1500 to 146 in the past 10 years. Some want the causeway to the island closed at night to stop vandalism & theft.

Dull day, not hot, only mid 20's C, overcast, light rain falling, not enough to add to the excitement of the car race.

Annette - Delilah Grace. Very pretty. My first thought was "sounds like a film star".

With some help from OH, I have got rid of the red cross on LG webcam. Now I am waiting for dawn . . .

Thing is, I still can't see it on the RSPB's Loch Garten Live page. Have looked at all kinds of dialog boxes and can't ID which box I should check or un-check. It's all so complicated.

Annette: Here are a couple of ideas that come to mind.

Did you try clicking the little red X error button? Did it give you any kind of error message? A series of numbers, perhaps?

Right click the area where the nest should appear. Do you see a menu? Under Options, do you see a menu option called Error Messages. Click it; it should tell you what's going wrong.

Check the recent activity in your Security/Virus Scan program. Is that program stopping the streaming of the nest? My Norton program can be fussy at times.

Basic advice...          Open your Windows Media Player program. In the very top left-hand corner, right-click on the words Windows Media Player. On the menu, click Help. From that menu, click Check for Updates. Make sure your program is up-to-date. If some of your codecs are old, they could cause a problem. (If you're running Windows 7, you should have an up-to-date version of Windows Media Player 12. If you're running another system, you should have a current version of Windows Media Player 11.)

Go to the Help menu again. Click on Windows Media Player Help at the top of the menu. On the Contents tab, click Troubleshooting the Player. Click Troubleshoot Problems. It will give you a list of steps for figuring out errors. The little red X indicates an error of some kind.

That's all I've got. I defer to JSB or Chloe or other authentic geek smart people (which I am not).

  • Good morning all and what a difference a day makes (as they say in the song), bright sun and clear blue skies yesterday but today cloudy again although quite mild.

aquilareen I hope that videos and capture will be able to be taken at LOtL.  For the wong reason Lady became famous all over the world during her serious illness last year and I am sure many more people became aware of these beautiful birds.  Hopefully some reply will be made in response to emailsthat have been sent.  It will be such a shame if people not in this time zone miss all that goes on in this nest.

Lynette more lovely captures from you, I watched the Lily video this morning and Faith and Jason are just so sweet and Hope is really helping Lily with them.  Love to see the cubs wobbling around in the den.  I though the same about the Panama osprey cam, a bit of a mess at the moment and needs a lot of building up.  The eaglet fast asleep is so cute too.

Chloe and Brenda H thanks for the moon pics.  I did look out last night but it didn't seem so bright or big last night and was a little more misty as the cloud came in.

Alan lovely capture of the co-operation in the Hampton nest, what a good partner he is.  So pleased for you that Dundee won again and bet Lady P was so pleased at Ireland beating England at rugby.  From what I saw England did not play very well at all.

ChrisyB it does get hard to keep up even for me and I am home all day but just pop in when you have the time although heaven knows very soon we will glued to our screens for the next few months wondering how we are going to fit everything in like housework etc.  Lovely pic of the barn owl, such beautiful birds and as you say they are so light in weight.

Gary Toffee is just so gorgeous and glad she likes to go for a swim, good exercise for her.  The photos made me smile, so fast asleep after all her play with head draped over the bar of the chair.  What pleasure she must be giving you both.

trish 2 OH managed to cut two of our three lawns yesterday for the first time.  Billy watched him doing it and I think there is something about OH's voice which he likes.  He was having a feed yesterday when OH went into the garden and didn't run away, stopped there until he had finished his feed.

TerryM we had bluetits nest in our box for the first time last year but as yet I have not seen any activity round the box.  Hope they will take up residence again as it was such fun to watch.  I agree with you it is nice to get washing dried outside, always smells so nice and fresh.

SheilaFE welcome back and glad you enjoyed your holiday.  Good you are back before the arrival of EJ and Odin.  I will have the cam open all the while when I am logged in and hopefully will catch EJ's arrival.

Annette  pleased to the little one has a name, Delilah Grace, and also that granddaughter, baby and OH all home now.  She will be pleased to get some help from your daughter i am sure.

Now on to some other news about my sister in Worcestershire.  Poor girl fell down the last step on her stairs and badly broke her right arm.  Had to have an operation to get it all back together in the right place.  She has just had an MRI scan and is due another scan later this week.  Has seen her consultant who has been discussing with her some trial treatment which is in its early stages as yet but it would mean that she would have to have chemotherapy as well.  She says she doesn't really want to have chemotherapy but if this is what is need after the results of her scans she has little option and will have to go down this route.  I am so proud of her as she has remained cheerful the whole way through and even though she now has her arm in plaster for the next 6 weeks is able to joke and laugh.

Glad to say I am feeling a lot better today, coughing fits few and far between now and don't think I am going to have any sinus problems.

My nephew's wife who had her operation a couple of weeks ago and who was told that she should be able to have more children now has found out after a visit for her check up that this may not be the case as her ovaries are so badly damaged and even though some cysts have been removed it is very likey they will grow back.   Seems such a shame that they gave her so much hope after the operation but now she is feeling quite down about things.

Hope you all have a good Sunday and at least we are one day closer to the return of our ospreys.

  • Diane: (EDIT: Have no idea what happened in the middle of this post. Click where it says to click to see rest of post)  Oh brilliant!  Look for error message? Well there was one - right across the top of the screen telling me that the site wanted to run an Active X-whatever program and asking if I wanted it to do that. Said yes and got a dialog box confirming I wanted to run Active X. When I did, lo and behold, there appeared the nest. Thing is, the

original message was in small print at the top of the screen and not terribly obvious when my attention was focused on the red X!  More used to them appearing in a dialog box in the middle of the screen. And when I right-clicked on the Red X or the blank screen, no message appeared. Still, success!!

AQ: Don't blame you for not frequenting those high-rises in Adelaide.  Shimmying up a light pole with red hanky much better idea. Never heard of fairy penguins; what on earth has caused such a drop in their numbers?  Sounds like restricting access to the causeway is a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has gone at this point.

Margobird: Oh my gosh. Your sister with cancer now has a broken arm?  That's awful. And now the docs are reversing their opinion about nephew's wife and the possibilty of future kiddies!  That, as you say, must be especially hard on her and her OH after having been given such hopes. I wonder they didn't notice the damage to her ovaries at the time of the op.  Well, at least you're feeling better; do take care and say Hallo to Billy Whizz, who is turning out to be a very welcome character on these pages; news of him always makes me smile!  :-)

We are having seriously wild weather here as I type (well, by SoCal standards). Woke up an hour ago to rain lashing against the bay window in the bedroom - haven't heard that before. They were forecasting 100 percent heavy rain and strong winds for today and it has started very early.  Hope new garden doesn't blow away!   Will now try to go back to sleep....

  • Annette your weather sounds very wild, hope it doesn't cause any damage in your new garden.

OH is at work this morning and has just sent me a link to a cam in Viareggio and guess what it is a lovely day there with blue skies and you can actually see all the stalls set out so looks like the Carnival procession will go ahead today.  Can only say what a bummer why couldn't  it be like this last weekend.

    Margobird

  • Annette - glad you now have the cam sorted. I gathered it must have been due to browser/activeX.

Your weather sounds awful, hope it doesn't last long.

Margo - So sorry to hear about your poor sister's arm.

Glad you enjoyed the moon pic. You mentioned a pic from BrendaH too, where is it posted so I can look?

  • ChloeB sorry I am obviously muddled.  Just looked back to last week and Brenda H mentioned it and said OH was taking photo.  I really must pay more attention.  Sorry BrendaH too.

    Margobird

  • My, what a lot has been written since I popped in during the rugby yesterday!  No wonder it is difficult to keep up!

Well, a good start to the day - 5.00am the burglar alarm went off and OH couldn't turn it off.  The batteries are on the blink!  A good thing our nearest neighbours are nearly 400m away.  Fortunately after about ten minutes peace reigned once more and we were able to get back to sleep.  Today is the last day of winter as far as I am concerned, 20 March, the last day in Pisces and my xxth birthday.  My 'presents' for the day have been goldfinch and long tailed tits on the feeders, a pair of buzzard soaring above the fields and possible a first - a siskin sharing the seed with a goldfinch.  We had quite a gathering in the kitchen - my brother popped over to give me a plant to replace many of those which didn't survive the winter, and our neighbours the female of which shares this illustrious day!  They were on their way to look and and discuss alpacas!  How amazing.

Gary 8 inches of rain sounds horrendous.  You mention flooding - were you affected?  Up to 15 degrees sounds lovely though.  I think we are now up to about 11 degrees, but it is much cooler than y'day.  No wnder we Brits continually talk about the weather - we rarely get two days the same!

I am about to be whisked away to meet up with friends for lunch.  So will leave the tale of Switzerland to yet another time.

    Birdie's DU Summaries 2018   https://www.imagicat.com/

  • Hi folks

Have those 7 long months really passed? Is it osprey season again?

    Hurray!!!!

Looking at the weather I think our poor ospreys could well have snow welcoming them in Scotland this year. I'm not convinced winter is over.

On a brighter note, I'm having my own bird problems here. Every time I put my hand down to the mouse I get nibbled. At the moment there are 2 cockatiels sitting on the mouse mat. They are both of the opinion that if there is a hand on the mouse then there are fingers there to tickle their heads. Problem is they both want tickled first. I need to grow more fingers on my right hand.

  • Oh Margobird Your family members are really having a hard time.  Thoughts and prayers for them all (and for you, as you have to cope with the worry about them all).
