NEWS FROM OTHER NESTS - 2011

Some interesting news from the Lake District. Apparently there was a second nest last year:

  • Finland update: All three chicks at Seili-nest are doing brilliantly - getting plenty of fish, even yesterday when there was a nasty gale male brought a huge fish during the storm. And the male feeds the chicks every now and then :)   At Hailuoto-nest three of four are doing well but #4 is awfully tiny - doesn't get enough fish I'm afraid :(  And sadly all chicks died in Janakkala-nest due the lack of fish :(((  Fishing conditions were very bad there at the time (15-17 June) and there are several other nests in that area where there has been seen only one chick lately.

  • Received Dumfries and Galloway email update from Liz Tindall at Wigtown:

"To update you on our chicks' progress – they are doing well, continuing to thrive on their fishy diet; EP seems to be bringing in enough to keep them going. H/D is having a bit of a time of it though trying to keep them dry in all the rain that we have been having, she must be glad of this nice weather that we are having now.  The chicks are starting to stand on their own and flapping a little building up those important flight muscles.  I am told they have been seen trying to feed themselves from the fish brought in so it won’t be long before they are ringed and then start to fly.

"AW’s 2 chicks at Caerlaverock are also doing well and we think that there are at least 2 at Threave.  Last year we all had 3 chicks this year it looks like we all have 2 – synchronicity or what!"

(Male AW at Caerlaverock was a son of H/D at Wigtown.  Male at Threave is Black80 from Glaslyn)

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Thanks OG

Some sad news. The 4th chick at Hailuoto has perished.

  • First Chick Hatched on the nest at Big Muskego lake in Wisconsin USA .  Look close you can see it  right behind the egg

Last year both chicks perished in a tornado so this is  fantastic news

  • We only have a still camera and the people who manage the site are very stingy with the information. So we have to hope we log in when the  female is standing up to catch  a picture of the progress. . This chick looks a couple of days old , but it is the first time I have caught a glimpse of it.

There is no forum to share information

She laid 2 eggs so I hope the other one hatches too.

The dark area directly behind the pole  is a beautiful lake brimming with fish . She doesn't need to go far to get a meal if the male lets her down

  • At Dyfi Monty has a new idea but Nora does not like it. See

  • Alan this video is  so funny!  The female was not  even sure which end to  grab to  get it out of the nest  LOL

She got her point across and he  removed it .

I guess it is the same all over.

The men haul home "treasures" and the women say, " Exactly what do you  expect me to do with THAT ?"

  • Tiger - Thanks for the video from DYFI, it was great to watch with so much detail.

  • Glaslyn have just tweeted that 78 has taken his first flight. Is this the UK's first fledge for 2011?
