NEWS FROM OTHER NESTS - 2011

Some interesting news from the Lake District. Apparently there was a second nest last year:

  • Keith : Not only were the rings put on the right leg but also they read the wrong way round. I dont think ringing is an exact science and mistakes get made in the heat of the moment. I have always thought the ringing numbering system was a bit random. I suppose as the population increases it gets harder to keep track of it all. I assume there is a database somewhere that holds all the ringing details. Probably at the BTO.

I am glad you reminded me of that. I watched it late last night and could not believe what I was seeing. I was thinking...Peebles is not in England is it?....or maybe France?

  • I have updated the spreadsheet as I had assumed the Tweed Valley chicks had been ringed "Scottish style" - thanks for the observation.

I think I've seen something recently about ringing saying that from 2012, all UK rings will be blue and have 3 digits - but I can't remember where I saw that

  • Sue C  You are entirely right. As from 2012  each country will have its own colour and there will be 3 digits on the ring.

After much thinking and searching.....there you are  :)

Typically poor reporting of facts though - only place in England to have 2 breeding pairs? I don't think so!

Hi Sue. If you post the updated version I will do the necessary on the website. Thanks. No forget that, it's ok I tweaked them myself.

  • Blue 39 from the Main nest fledged on 5/8 at Kielder. Not sure about 37 and 38 from the other nest. Ubfortunately as you say sandy not much reporting the latest only a BBC NE clip. Not sure if Alan has mentioned 37/38 on this forum unfortunately with travelling globally on a regular basis I miss some blogs and have to ask questions.

  • Keith: 37/38 were ringed on 19/07. Latest re fledging:

"T"he news from the second nest is that the two youngsters were still there on Tuesday but the older of the two was flapping its wings wildly. Later reports suggested that one of the young may have taken to the air but this is still not confirmed. We knew that these young were a little behind the other nest so it’s about now that we expect some developments. Once all young are airborn there will, for a short time at least, be 7 ospreys to be seen and thus a good chance that they will be spotted over the reservoir.

  • Thanks Alan this keeps me up to date at Kielder another tetser for you - Is their a link to SKYHAWK the bird sat tagged at Nairn by Roy - Is the migration being tracked on HWT by Roy or the sponsor. Also the other bird he tagged in Caithness I assume he will report this on his own site.
