Weekly Chat, Sunday March 6, 2011

Welcome to another week. Do check back lest you miss the pics of many and varied birds plus a certain Toffee. And lots of news of course. Diane had another thunderstorm.

Diane - Uncontrollable children in olden days. Children were sent out to "service" as young as 10. Of course they ran away, thus breaking "Masters & Servants Act". Probably broke other laws as humans do. There were probationary school from which they also ran away. I found some twigs on my family tree who were regularly in trouble with the law - for playing the wicked game of two-up in pubs! Their 13 year old brother went one better (ahem), he broke into a school.

Patriciat - So sorry your OH has fallen again. Don’t worry about moaning to us. We do understand. I’m sending blue skies and healing thoughts to your house.

Our spring bulbs are appearing - confused by the unseasonal rain a few weeks ago. Poor things, there’s another possible 3 weeks of hot weather (34C so far today) and winter rains are not usual until May.

Whoo hoo. Less than 3 weeks to OR Day (Osprey Return day). I wonder what soap opera saga they have for us this year!

  • ALICAT  Good for you. Where are you going?

  • Lovely sunny day here today, even some warmth in the sun.  Cycled about 20 miles with friend, as OH away until Wednesday.  Some of our daffodil heads are hanging down now, so not long until they open. Sparrows are carrying fluff and feathers about, it must be spring!

Gary!!! No sooner do I put Toffee on as my background, than you post another even sweeter pic : ))

Wendy, there is also “daffy snow” still to come...

Annette, no, I don’t have blonde hair! What colour footwear do you prefer? I try to get brown trainers if possible but my current walking boots are blue. I hate seeing those huge (they look huge anyway) white trainers.

Patricia, sorry you had to abandon the dog comp, hope OH is ok now.

Tiger, nice to hear from you again, glad you are recovering, and hello Chloe.

Auntie, I have saved your owl pic for when I get fed up with having Toffee, it might have to wait a long time!

OG, I am the same with nuts, just don’t like them in things, especially when they don’t tell you.

  • Morning all:  Bad night's sleep so dragging about a bit and thinking perhaps an afternoon nap in the garden might help.

    Alan: Thanks for Beatrice update.

Tiger: I hope your gallstone op was the "keyhole" version - those attacks are really painful. I have just one large gallstone, which apparently is less likely to cause a problem. It's been 30 years since it was diagnosed. (Hope I'm not tempting fate!)Awful losing the tracked birds and all that potential knowledge. Perhaps Belle caught a nice ride on a long air current.

Margobird: I think people who talk to animals, birds, fish, are the ones who've found the plot.

dibnlib: I don't so much talk to machines as shout at them! Do OH's relatives carry earthquake insurance I wonder; awful that the houses are damaged but good they're all safe. Like your amorous young couple there.

Gary: That's a long time in a pet store! Hope Ms Toffee found something she liked.

TerryM: Hmmm. Light brown shoulder-length hair?  I used to play tennis so got used to white shoes/trainers, but you're right, they do tend to make (my already) large feet look even bigger so I prefer to have any white offset by some color (just not shiny hot pink, lime green or brilliant turqouise, etc.); gray is okay too. I tend to go for a natural beige/brown for everyday shoes (same with handbags since can't be bothered to change them). Nobody has ever accused me of being a fashion plate.

OK, legs seem to be working now so off to see what's up in the garden. Take care all.

  • Afternoon all. Not much to report since this morning. Apart from rain.

Alicat, very exciting, where are you off to?

    Dibnlib, lovely picture

Terry, well done on the cycle ride. Makes me feel tired and saddle sore just thinking about it

Annette, hope you had a nap this afternoon after all your work in the garden. Alison and TT did get some stuff but 90% of the time was spent being petted (TT, rather than A, I think..)

ALICAT  Good for you. Where are you going?

Hi dibnlib we going to scotland

  • Alan  thanks for the peregrine cams and news of Beatrice. I checked Roy's site the other day but will have to re-visit now.

Gary I'm not at all surprised everyone wanted to stroke TT.  Very good socialisation too.

Quite a busy day today.  It started cloudy and chilly but we've had a beautiful afternoon.  We went round to our allotment to do a bit of tidying up.  I left the proper digging to OH. Lots more still to do though. He won best half plot last year so will not want to be beaten this time.  I've never seen so many ladybirds though. There was quite a big patch of weed that they must have been living in over the winter.  I rescued about 30 from a very small area.  Apparently other people have found the same.  We will have to look for a ladybird house for them.  I'm afraid to say I was talking to them!

We had a very nice rump steak for tea last night.  When I got up this morning OH has skewered a couple of left over bits on the apple tree in the hope Mrs SH would come but we haven't seen her today!!!  When we were at the allotment which is only just up the road a red kite was circling over the back field. I reckoned that would have been down in a flash if it had got a sniff of it.

  • Well another Spring day up here on Speyside but this could all change on Thursday when I have my snow tyres taken off ready for my road trip to Dorset. Has to be done as they are made of a softish compound and motorway driving would destroy them.

Decided to do the Loch Morlich walk as LG walks are nice but with so much tree cover we would have lost a lot of any warmth from the sun. Usual coffee and scone at the Glenmore Forest visitors centre.Sorry no photos but the battery died on us...no forward planning by OH. By the time we got home about 3 ish the cloud had come down and became quite chilly.

A flock of around 50 Oyster Catchers having a good feed of worms in field by the river and our first sighting this year of a Lapwing.

Gary; TT is looking so relaxed and after seeing the other photos of her in her cage and bed she is going to need new ones soon. Put that together with the extra fencing...ouch!!!

Good news about Beatrice even in this day and age the technology is still quite amazing.

Alicat:: Scotland is quite large...so any particular part or is that a silly question as you are on this blog?

I talk to animals....I shout at machinery.

  • Hi Everybody!  Just putting myself back on the roll for this osprey-watching season.  ;-)  I have'nt had a chance yet to read back and catch up with what's been happening with everyone, but I will do that ASAP.   Love, Jan.

    Smiles, Jan.

  • Sunday evening – just realised I haven’t written anything since last evening!  Has been a pleasant spring day.  Reserving judgement on new Minister as I have still to hear him preach – this morning he led the service and did very well considering it was all-age service.  But his Dad preached a great sermon – and looks like Father Christmas with a twinkle in his eye.  Coffee afterwards took as long as the actual service!  Had quick soup lunch (spicy parsnip and apple) then went to the Green Marketplace – a good little effort, although recycling stalls were more like a car-boot or garage sale.  Some of the Farmer’s Market producers were there so we got some more local meats to freeze.  Could probably set up a stall with contents of our freezer, but always feel we want to encourage them by buying, although we have a limited number of meat meals per week.  Came home via local pottery and bought a ceramic vase and a get well card for Son.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!
