After Tiger started the thread for tracking Rothes and Mallachie I thought that we could do with a thread for the tracking of ospreys fitted with transmitters by Roy Dennis. As the "summer" marches on it won't be long before the only way we can get our osprey fix is to follow their migrations.
This year we have the opportunity of following all three tagged birds from last year: Nimrod, Beatrice and Morven. It will be fascinating to find out if they will winter in exactly the same place as last year, and also whether they take the same route.
Added to that Roy has tagged two more adult males this year, Red/white 8T (an Abernethy bird) and Morven's other half (Logie's ex fella). I'm not certain whether Roy has any further transmitters or will attempt to catch any more adult males but, including Rothes and Mallachie, we will be able to follow at least 7 ospreys on their incredible journeys this autumn.
As I'm not a regular on this page, I hope I'm not repeating something you all already know. I did check back just in case but could not see any reference here to Rothie's pic on Roy's blog. (Apologies for a convoluted sentence!)
Thanks FlyingC. Fantastic photograph.
Thanks Flying C off to have a look now and it is thrilling to know so much of the world is involved.

Thanks FlyingC. That is so amazing.

Thanks for the tipoff about Roy's blog - I must have missed that when checking the site the other day, as I just looked at the top of Rothie's current page and didn't spot the new photos! Rothie looks so different now from the rather timid-looking chick on his "home page".
Interesting that Roy's penultimate blog entry of 6th Feb, talks about damage caused to osprey nests by the snow; I had wondered if that would be a problem. Looks as if there will have to be some frantic rebuilding between now and late March!

I too hadn't checked Roy's blog for some time (I usually go straight to the ospreys individual pages) and spent a bit of time catching up on his previous entries. I hadn't thought the nests would be so badly affected by the snow and there won't be much time to get things ready for the returnees. Do we know if EJ's nest is still OK?
I agree with you: Rothie looks more mature - his feathers seem to have changed. Roy did say there would be more photos and I look forward to those in due course.
Sue C A very good question regarding EJ's nest. I think it is unlikely that snow has affected it since it is so well supported by previous human intervention.
I think it was January 1986 that someone tried to saw down the tree that was then recontructed before the female arrived back on 31st March 1986. However the season was not a success because the male that turned up was immature and he left. Another male turned up but it was too late to breed that yeat.
