Tracking Other UK Ospreys

  • Latest from Roy Dennis on Rothiemurchus:

    "

    25 October 2009

Yesterday, Rothiemurchus stayed in the same part of the coast, but today he slowly worked south down the Atlantic coast and by 1833GMT was 48 kilometres south of last night's roost site."

  • Thanks Alan, very interesting. I suppose the jury is out regarding whether he will stay on the Mauritanian Coast or continue South.

  • Thanks Alan.  The thing that worries me about this coastline is the lack of safe roosting sites.  Being on the ground raises the vulnerability level quite a bit.  I suppose it really does point out to us just how adaptable these ospreys are, though.  Nethy actually touched the coast a bit south of Rothiemurchus' current position, which is interesting.  I wonder if Rothie will work his way all the way down the coast.  Personally, I hope so!

    Smiles, Jan.

  • Jukka is now in Cameroon. Latest plotted position as at 17:00 on 25.10.2009 is 50 miles west of Guider. GE has been updated.

It would be good if the positions of Rothes and Mallachie were plotted and shown on GE as they do on the Finnish site for Jukka. Then we would know exactly where they both were at a certain time.

  • Another post from Roy about Rothie.   He seems to be settling in on that stretch of the Mauritanian coast - but early days yet.  Interesting what you learn about different parts of the world.  It looks like a good osprey winter site after all.

  • Update from Roy on Rothie. He's decided not to stop on the Mauritanian coast and is heading on South. He was near the Djoudj Bird Reserve at 3pm today.

  • Thanks Sandy. Looks like Rothie is going to join the other Scottish ospreys further south. Jukka is now in Cameroon on the south east corner of a large lake near a place called Lagdo or Lagdon. Latest positioning is at 23:00 on 27.10.2009. Looks like a good place for an osprey to be.

  • I am so looking forward to see where Rothiemurchus decides to stay.

BTW just figured out that they have "made" English sites for Jukka

    http://www.fmnh.helsinki.fi/english/zoology/satelliteospreys/jukka/index.htm

so hopefully no more confusing translations

  • Thanks very much for that info Auntie. It makes it much easier for me to read rather than translating using Google translator. The part in Finnish is slightly more up to date than the English translated part at the moment.

  • Many thanks, Auntie.   For some reason , I hadn't realised Jukka was an adult bird.  I had put him and Rothie in the same bracket, so to speak!  I've saved the English page to my favourites for easy access.

Speaking of Rothie, great to see him doing so well.  Hope it continues.
