After Tiger started the thread for tracking Rothes and Mallachie I thought that we could do with a thread for the tracking of ospreys fitted with transmitters by Roy Dennis. As the "summer" marches on it won't be long before the only way we can get our osprey fix is to follow their migrations.
This year we have the opportunity of following all three tagged birds from last year: Nimrod, Beatrice and Morven. It will be fascinating to find out if they will winter in exactly the same place as last year, and also whether they take the same route.
Added to that Roy has tagged two more adult males this year, Red/white 8T (an Abernethy bird) and Morven's other half (Logie's ex fella). I'm not certain whether Roy has any further transmitters or will attempt to catch any more adult males but, including Rothes and Mallachie, we will be able to follow at least 7 ospreys on their incredible journeys this autumn.
I need help please!
I am following our Ospreys, but how do I put Roy Dennis's Ospreys on GE and Jukka's?
Thanks :-)
If nothing goes right, go left! :-)
Hi Sandy
I'm assuming you've already got GE set up to show Rothes & Mallachie's routes.
Adding Jukka is fairly simple. First, open the web page where his movements are described: http://www.fmnh.helsinki.fi/elainmuseo/satelliittisaakset/jukka/syksy2009.htm
Then click on the link Google Earthissa (KML) towards the top of that page, and GE will open (you will have to click on various panels to authorise this), showing Jukka's route as well as R&M's.
In GE, in the Places panel on the LHS, you will find you have an entry for Jukka under Temporary Places. To avoid going through the above steps in future, you can "drag and drop" this up to the My Places folder.
There isn't any automated way of getting Roy's birds onto GE. I use colour coded Placemarks to show their current positions. Don't know if anyone else has experimented with Tours? Cheers, Sue

I've absolutely no idea, Alan! (I'm not convinced that anybody else has either). I'm in awe of the fact that the adults can navigate over 3500 miles to find their favourite roost tree, let alone the mysteries of juvenile migration.
Incidentally, the adults don't always rely on landmarks. Tracking the East Coast US birds has shown that they are capable of true navigation in finding their wintering grounds, . Amazing!
Thank you SueC.
I shall go to GE and put in the link you gave me.
Thanks.
Thanks from me too, SueC. Have now got Jukka on GE - a nice red coloured migration route.
Mallachie and Rothes are approx. 30 miles from RED8T s wintering site.
Rothie is really getting a move-on, and is nearing the Mauritanian border, heading towards the coast.

Well, he got too much of a move-on and ended up 120km out over the Atlantic! Thankfully he turned back East to make landfall to roost, making the days journey a mighty 620km.
The RW website has been updated to include a report on Tim and John's recent trip to Spain chasing migrating ospreys!
Thanks for that Sandy. I was just going to post the same thing. I wonder why Rothie flew out to sea. Sandstorms in the desert perhaps. Interesting that Rothie is 16 kms south of Morvens wintering site.
Jukka has moved on and is now in southern Niger 80 miles NE of Tanout as at 14:00 on 22.10.2009.
Thanks Alan and Sandy. Watching Rothie is rather nerve wracking at times.
I keep my eye on Bird Guides and they are still reporting osprey passing through GB. One even in Chorleywood, Herts. this morning and one has been around Latimer, Bucks for the last few days. Do we think that these are all from Scandinavia ?
