Tracking Other UK Ospreys

After Tiger started the thread for tracking Rothes and Mallachie I thought that we could do with a thread for the tracking of ospreys fitted with transmitters by Roy Dennis. As the "summer" marches on it won't be long before the only way we can get our osprey fix is to follow their migrations.

This year we have the opportunity of following all three tagged birds from last year: Nimrod, Beatrice and Morven. It will be fascinating to find out if they will winter in exactly the same place as last year, and also whether they take the same route.

Added to that Roy has tagged two more adult males this year, Red/white 8T (an Abernethy bird) and Morven's other half (Logie's ex fella). I'm not certain whether Roy has any further transmitters or will attempt to catch any more adult males but, including Rothes and Mallachie, we will be able to follow at least 7 ospreys on their incredible journeys this autumn.

  • Thanks FlyingC. I saw that story yesterday and what a great outcome. Roy does so much good.

On the "last page" thing, if you click on the link near the top left hand corner of this page "Loch Garten Ospreys" that brings you to all the foums under that main heading and you can click on "lastest post" on any of those. That is mainly how I get around. No idea if that has helped!!

    Thanks for the information Katie.

  • Point taken Katie. I will put the link in the next time. I have just read the copyright law and was not aware of this.

Gary:  THANK YOU so much.  Never knew that facility existed.   Absolutely love it when I learn something new like that which is so useful into the bargain!

  • Thanks for telling us about the rescued osprey.  Had looked at Roy's site earlier this morning and it wasn't there then (or perhaps I missed it).  Must have been very satisfying for Roy to see him flying off.  Lots to look forward to next year as he might be back and perhaps he is the father of Rothiemurchus.  He has had a lucky escape anyway and it is wonderful that we have all these people who are so passionate about these wonderful birds.  Wish him good luck on his migration.

  • My pleasure FlyingC.:)

I'm sure there are lots of short cuts about all over the place I don't know !

  • Please notice: by first clicking "En" somewhere to the top-right corner of Faune-Aquitaine you'll have it all in English (our home-made English...).

Please also be careful when interpreting the maps: obviously no osprey is seen... where no birder is present! There are pretty large portions of our coastal area that is poorly covered.

Finally just a word to tell you that we are delighted by your interest! If any of you come to Aquitaine even for a short visit (hey, we do have many birds here!) please use FA to announce your sightings!

  • Could you please remind me at which URL to find the current location of "your" ospreys, and especially Rhotes? I would be happy to communicate it to the aquitanian birders so they can help you more efficiently.

  • Hi Olivier

Thank you for your kind words and thank you for your wonderful website

Here is a link to the tracking page of the ospreys. http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/tracking/lochgartenospreys/index.asp

We follow her mainly on Google Earth . Here is the webpage to put in the needed link

I don't know if that helps?

  • Gary - I was trying to answer the question and got so bogged down in the detail I checked back to see if anyone else had got there before me and you have done it superbly!

  • Hi Apumel,

You wanted to find out where 'our' ospreys are. Well, at the moment the last information is that Rothes is on the Gironde, roosting (sleeping) at Dr Jones', esturgeon farm, in the trees, near Port Maubert, a very small harbour, which is near St Fort sur Gironde and Mallachie is now in Spain, but also flies to Portugal as well. Her last position.............

she then returned to near Ladoeiro to roost (as of 9pm yesterday).

It is best for you to add the tracking link to your Google Earth.....first open GE, check for updates, and download if needed, then go here.......

Follow the chicks (young birds) from your computer using Google's free earth simulation software.

Follow the instuctions given on the above page, and use 'add' on GE to paste the link. (a network link, kml file)

This will give you coloured lines of the flight pathsup to the latest data received, usually within the last 24 hours. The updates occur on weekdays sometime after 7PM UK time, but sometimes not until the following day.

If you cannot be bothered with that you can use this page instead..........which is for the casual observer, the GE version is mainly for enthusiasts.

Good luck, let us know if it works!
