After Tiger started the thread for tracking Rothes and Mallachie I thought that we could do with a thread for the tracking of ospreys fitted with transmitters by Roy Dennis. As the "summer" marches on it won't be long before the only way we can get our osprey fix is to follow their migrations.
This year we have the opportunity of following all three tagged birds from last year: Nimrod, Beatrice and Morven. It will be fascinating to find out if they will winter in exactly the same place as last year, and also whether they take the same route.
Added to that Roy has tagged two more adult males this year, Red/white 8T (an Abernethy bird) and Morven's other half (Logie's ex fella). I'm not certain whether Roy has any further transmitters or will attempt to catch any more adult males but, including Rothes and Mallachie, we will be able to follow at least 7 ospreys on their incredible journeys this autumn.
This might be interesting (see link)

It's a map of Osprey sightings in Aquitaine, SW France, since the start of this migration season. Ospreys do not breed in this region, so these birds are all on migration.
The colour of the dot shows how recent the sighting was - Yellow is early August, Scarlet is recent.
Thanks for that SueC,
The size of the circle is the indicator of numbers, but is this the actual number of birds or is it the number sightings reported, I wonder.
Will have to investigate.

Thanks Sue, that is a very interesting graphic. Lots of birds on their way through.
Sorry about the manly gulp earlier:) They do tug at the heartstings, even if I don't know exactly why.
Oh Gary, please do NOT apologise for a 'manly gulp' - they do indeed tug at the heart strings.
I'm really showing my appalling ignorance here (stupidity even) but I don't understand the large 'blue' portion on Sue's graphic. Would someone please explain. LOTS of scarlet I notice - migration really under way today.

The blue is the sea. We are all on a learning curve so please don't consider yourself ignorant at all
Use whatever talent you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sing the best.- Henry Van ***
Breaking news: Roy has added another tagged bird to his website. He has called it Rothiemurchus and it's a juvenile!! It was fitted with its' transmitter while being ringed on 10/08/09 at Rothiemurchus nest A18. Another one to follow!!
Wow, Roy has added the info to his website as he assumed Rothiemurchus started his migration today - he did get as far as South Deeside but decided to head back to Strathspey and ended up at Loch Garten!!
If any of the wardens saw it there they must have been rubbing their eyes in disbelief to see an osprey with a transmitter!!
wow, that is incredible Sandy. Thanks for the news.
Good grief Sandy, does that mean I have to stay up late to watch the nest? :-)
So hope that someone saw Rogthimurchus at LG.
