Morning all: Here's to a good week for everyone. Check out latest pages of last week's thread to see great pix by OG of a kestrel on a road sign and a signpost for migrating birds and Gary's photos of the lovable Toffee plus his Toffee-proof technology. Just had dinner and managed to turn perfectly lovely piece of halibut into shoe leather!  Hate it when that happens, but was busy watching weather forecast.  Desk is looking cleaner - can actually see the surface now.  Take care all!

  • Just lost a post as site was playing up. Will try again.

Caught up with all the news from Margobird, Lindybird, OG, Alan, Annette, AQ, George, Trish2, WendyB, and Uncle Tom Cobley and All.

Shocking news about the Christchurch earthquake. Lots of historic buildings destroyed and the tower of the Catherdral collapsed in. At least 65 dead and lots injured with still more trapped.

Dibnib - do hope cousins are safe.   Have a cousin living in Aukland but not sure where the rest of her family are located so just hoping that they are safe too. Will email her tomorrow

Alan - what a well fed peregrine he/she is and lovely capture of the mating at Dunedin.   Osprey now gone from the Panhandle site.

Trish2 - super pics of Scotland and have saved to favourites - hope that is OK with you

A few of Lily and co having a play!!!!

  • Evening all: Just had whopping chicken salad for dinner (with Feta cheese, olives, artichokes, tomatoes, peppers, avocado, etc., etc., and nice hot rolls with butter and, of course glass - or was it two? - of wine).   Forgot to mention saw three whales - well their blows at least - yesterday.  One southbound, two northbound; all very, very far out on the horizon but the blows were clearly visible )wth binocs) against the dark silhouette of Santa Cruz Island.

OG: Garage door fixed in less than 15 minutes!  Hurray!  (Still no keys though).  Sounds like a nice day with daughter et al; enjoy your visit with son.  How rude that your hairdryer blew up in your face!

dinblib:  OH just asked me the name of Hyacinth's son (and he just remembered: Sheridan!).  Patricia R very talented and funny - great sense of timing - not surprised her gift showed up early..

Trish: Lovely, lovely photos!  Lucky Margo!

Thanks for pix of bear cam and news about Phoebe. Have a good Wednesday (Wednesday already?) everyone!

  • Hi, all. Hope everyone's family and friends are safe in New Zealand. Such a tragedy.

OG: Oh, my stars! I'm glad that you're okay!!! Having a hairdryer blow up in your hands can't be a good way to start the day. I think I would have gone back to bed. That could have been so much worse. Sheesh! Hope it was the hairdryer and not a power surge in your home. Glad you had a lovely visit with your family and a safe journey home. Sorry about your SiL's thumb. Ouch!

Margo: Glad everyone has been so helpful and that you're getting the logistics all worked out for your LG trip. You'll have such fun.
Trish: I hope you enjoy your time at LG, too! So glad you get to spend 2 weeks there! I envy you.
Lindy: I forgot to say that I loved the Monday Smiles!
Patricia: Well done you and Tweed! Such a good doggy!
George: I'm so pleased that you and Diesel are settling in so well. Just wonderful!
Alan: I really enjoyed that Astronomy Picture of the Day video. Thanks for posting. Does put everything in perspective.

AQ/Annette: Glad the Japanese Whaling Fleet has given up for the season.
AQ: I watched a program filmed in the Outback this afternoon, and I saw a skink that looked like Lizarda. It moved fast but was not aggressive! A very attractive guide was leading the folks through the flooded Outback roads. You have some fine lookin' men in Australia! LOLOLOL

Auntie: So sorry you're having to work so hard. I hope you get a chance for some rest and relaxation. The end of winter must be difficult in your country. Our days are starting to get longer here. Today our sunrise was at 7:27 am and sunset was 6:29 pm.

Annette: Glad that you saw the blows of the three whales!

Hi to everyone I've missed and neglected.

I may not be around for a couple of days. If I can summon up some energy, I'm going to a protest/demonstration at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis. I'll decide in the morning whether I feel like making the trip.

    Everyone have a great Wednesday!

  • Another grey day – can’t see the point of all this cloud when it doesn’t even do anything!

Terry – sorry about cycling discomfort – but I would imagine it’s a lovely ride.  How is Cockermouth these days, since those floods?  I like Whitehaven – and one year we went to the amazing Maritime Festival there – brilliant!

Annette – dinner sounds good – might invite myself next time!  So pleased Whales are showing up – even if one of them was going the wrong way!  Pleased garage door was a quick job.

Diane - was definitely the hairdryer itself – sparks came out of it, but it didn’t trip its thermal cut out, fuse in the plug, RCD or anything else in the system!  It just failed dramatically!  What are you going to be protesting about at the Statehouse?  Have you had the car fixed to get there?  Do take care – protests in the UK are getting very ugly these days.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • OG  thank goodness you weren't more badly burned, though your hand sounds sore.  Just about to wash my hair so will be eyeing my hairdryer suspiciously!

Lynette glad you like the pictures.  I can just imagine being there when I look at them.

  •  Morning all Grey and fairly gloomy here today again, with rain forecast again!  It's getting tedious.

Tweed says thanks to all for the congrats - he does the work, I just try not to send him the wrong way.

Trish2 You got in ahead of me with the pics of LG etc.  I have large numbers of them as it's such a beautiful area I can't resist taking more each time we go.

OG What a scary experience with your hairdryer.  Mine is quite old and sometimes smells as if it's overheating, which worries me!  Hope your hand heals quickly.  you have enough problems without that.

News from NZ is not getting any better.  Reports are that 300 people are still missing.

  • Thanks, Trish and Patricia – the hand is pretty good – immediate cold water treatment prevented any blister, and it didn’t go deep, so it’s only slightly uncomfortable – I was very lucky.

Trish – the pictures take me back to the Cairngorms too – only as a visitor, not a volunteer!  But possibly only one visit this year, after four in 2010!

Patricia – beware the hot-smelling hairdryer!  The thermal cut out on mine had stopped it a few times in past months, so I guess I was warned – but don’t know why it didn’t cut out this time.

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Hello, Everyone!   Gloomy here, too and no sign of it brightening, although I think the weather girl said it might later on today.

Can see that I've got a lot of reading to do before I can reply, as I left off on Page 8 and we're now up to 12! already.  If there are no more entries for the 'Lottery Competition' which I started last week, I shall announce the winner later on today.

Terrible news from N. Zealand, how tragic that so many are still missing.
