Weekly Chat, Sunday February 20, 2011

Morning all: Here's to a good week for everyone. Check out latest pages of last week's thread to see great pix by OG of a kestrel on a road sign and a signpost for migrating birds and Gary's photos of the lovable Toffee plus his Toffee-proof technology. Just had dinner and managed to turn perfectly lovely piece of halibut into shoe leather!  Hate it when that happens, but was busy watching weather forecast.  Desk is looking cleaner - can actually see the surface now.  Take care all!

  • SheilaFE you are quite welcome to post on my personal page.

Re my LG trip, one of the things I wondered about was where I could buy food.  I am travelling up by plane and WendyB has very kindly offered to pick me and take me to LG.  Obviously I can't take food with me so have been wondering if there is somewhere fairly close to buy provisions.  Do I need to take a sleeping bag and towels. Lots ofother  things going through my mind and of course the minute I start to try and put them in writing my mind is blank so any tips you can give me would be appreciated.

How many times have you vonuteered at LG and I guess you enoyed it very much.

  • --just been enjoying your videos, margo!  how cute!  Hope you are feeling alright today - I thought it was wise of you to keep busy when you felt a bit alone yesterday.

also laughed a lot at dibnlib's stories of puppies eating things!.

Hope OG is enjoying her trip today, I missed saying 'Have a good Trip' last night.

Thanks to Diane for the lovely bright pic of the goldfinch to cheer us up on this dull day.  Did laugh at the story about the naming of the building - they should just go for it!

Gary: Hope your OH is feeling a lot better today.  Sounds like Miss Toffeetips is keeping you busy!

Annette:   Oh dear, now your garage door is playing up! Hope it can be sorted. And that those keys turn up.  You can come and clear my desk for me, too, by the way -its a huge mess and just seems to be getting worse.  I just keep adding to the chaos and nothing ever gets taken from the pile(s)!   I thought the story/pics about the kitty was a bit, well, strange - at 1st it seemed cute, but then I wondered if maybe the owner had persuaded her to get into that jar...  let's hope not and it was as she described, just a mad cat.

Trish:  I see Mia likes a wash - our mad Buzz just loves water of every kind and has to be restrained from jumping into every lake puddle and river we come across - he swims at the drop of a hat, however cold it is.  However, he's not so keen on being washed down when he gets home all muddy from his walk.

Son and Girlfriend came yesterday for a nice Sunday lunch- we served roast pork with all the trimmings, and I did two kinds of crumble for desert - apple and gooseberry.  That is, one of the crumbles came out of the freezer, unmarked, so we served it as a 'surprise', and I made the gooseberry one as I was fairly sure that the mystery object wasn't gooseberry!!  All well in the end as the young ones both had a serving of both. Must stop calling her the New Girlfriend now as she's become quite a fixture now and is advising him on his interior decor - something which he won't listen to us regarding.  They seem well suited so hope it lasts. Later that night when they had departed, we watched the new series of 'South Riding' which promises to be good.  My OH helped with the hoovering etc. before they came, and put the meat in the oven & supervised its timing, so it was a joint effort.  (ha ha! - just realised the pun....)

Loved the expression from Sheila, "write my own novel without paper" as regards the dusting!!

  • p.s.  Alan - what a fantastic screenshot of the Peregrine.  Thanks

  • Glad you liked the videos Lindybird there were loads more but I thought I had better stop there.

Glad you had a nice day yesterday  and I liked the "joint" pun.

Feeling much brighter as OH on his way home now.  Will be back at abut 10.30 tonight so will have to try and stay awake.  Glad I am not relying on the weather to cheer me up.  It really is such a miserable day here, have had lights on as it is so dark and it is quite foggy at the moment.

Billy Whizz has not been around yet but I imagine he will turn up at about 4.30 for his food etc.  He made me smile yesterday, almost in ktten mode he was rolling around on our patio.

We have recorded South Riding to watch at some stage, have so much recorded and never enough time for OH to watch.  We have to keep deleting things to make room for more stuff we won't have time to watch.

  • Diane: Gorgeous goldfinch! Never seen Primeval (and don't get BBC America - I'd like to but it's the only one in a whole other batch of optional channels that I'd watch and I depend on PBS for my UK TellyFix!)  However, reading through subsequent posts, seems I'm missing a good show. I just drove through part of the Sonoran Desert; wonder where Meteorite Man lives.

Lindybird: Thanks for smiles (had to laugh at Yesterdays Meals on Wheels). Desk even cleaner now since I sorted through more stuff last night while watching telly. Maybe my keys are caught up in the garage door mechanism somewhere- not really, but.....   I too was wondering if that kitty in the bottle had had any help fitting it; it didn't look that contented. Oooh, gooseberry crumble - can't get gooseberries here. :-(

Trish: My daughter called to say she'd taken Oro (her dog) out for his very first walk in the snow - he loved it!

SheilaFE: Boyd's books don't follow any particular format. Every one is different. I read a recommendation for his books in the Wall Street Journal's weekend section and have since read all his books (I think). Was interested to see he'd done the screenplay for the television series. Love Jim Broadbent! What a marvellous face.

Margobird: Good your OH is on his way home. How nice that he loves his job.  I guess that this time alone may have left you with more time to think about your sister.

Alan: Thanks as always for peregrine and falcon pix.

Plan to start up gym schedule again this morning; then home for lunch and off to count whales!  Back later; take care all.

  • Hi Annette those garage keys are very elusive, I suspect that they will turn up eventually.  Glad Oro liked his walk in the snow.  My sister's dog loves the snow when we get it.

I guess I did have a little too much time to reflect on things but OH is on his way home now and will see him in about 6 hours time.  Hope you enjoyed the gym and wishing you a good whale count.

  • Margobird.  I have written a long screed on your page, but it hasn't appeared yet.  I may have to repeat it tomorrow!  But I think I referred to Brenda when in fact I meant WendyB.  Sorry about that.  Won't be long till your OH is putting his keys in the door.

As you say Annette Jim Broadbent is an excellent actor with a very expressive face, but I have to say I thought the whole cast was excellent too.  I was really gripped with it.  I do hope you manage to find you keys.  Sorry about the garage.  Just be grateful you weren't under it at the time.  No, that doesn't  bear thinking about.

Lindy the novel will have to wait another day now!  I can see the wood for the dust now.

South Riding last night was great.  Sometimes I think a two hour programme would be really worth it!

I came across the organisation in 2006 when a bottle nosed whale became stranded in the Thames, right up in the City  http://www.thameswhale.info/ .  Huge efforts were made to make it turn round and when that failed they caught it and took it by boat to the mouth of the Thames.  TV cameras were on it most of the time.  Sadly it died before it could be released. WDCS volunteers are often called out when any cetaceans are in trouble or seals are abandoned around our shores.

    Good luck with your whale-watch

  • Good evening SheilaFE your long screed has not appeared as yet.  When I have sent messages to personal pages they don't always work.  Hope you saved a copy of it.

OH should just about be arriving at Euston now so he will go across to Waterloo and get the train to Bournemouth.  Have had quite a few calls from him this afternoon so that helped.
