Weekly Chat, Sunday February 20, 2011

Morning all: Here's to a good week for everyone. Check out latest pages of last week's thread to see great pix by OG of a kestrel on a road sign and a signpost for migrating birds and Gary's photos of the lovable Toffee plus his Toffee-proof technology. Just had dinner and managed to turn perfectly lovely piece of halibut into shoe leather!  Hate it when that happens, but was busy watching weather forecast.  Desk is looking cleaner - can actually see the surface now.  Take care all!

  • I'm not sure where Sunday went. (Now 4.40 pm.) Thanks for starting us on our way again Annette.

I had to laugh at Gary's "Berlin Wall".

Annette - Lizarda is about 15 ins long. No, I haven't measured her - that's OH's guesstimate. St Anthony used to work overtime for my mother, a great believer in his powers. Dau#2 used to rely on me. "Mummmeeeee, would you come and do your thing". So I would stand in the room and ask have you looked there? "Yes". But have you looked properly? OR "It wouldn't be there." Well look anyway. I had great success . . . I wonder what she does now she's left home. OK, here goes, let's see if it works long-distance LOL.  I am standing in your garage threatening your memory. When did you last have the keys? What did you do exactly before you left? Where did you put them when you got distracted?

  • Just dropping into Chat (as is my wont!) - good to hear from dibnlib.

I know the Dorking cockerel statue mentioned by Gary - here it is on Geograph. The breed does originate in the area. Continuing with the "signposts" and "Romans" themes, this signpost (recent) stands on Bignor Hill where Stane Street crosses the South Downs.

Off out walking in Ashdown Forest - Winnie the Pooh country - will probably get wet!

  • Terry – good to see a post from you yesterday evening.  Pruning apple trees reminded me of blossom and that Spring really will come!

Annette – still catching up sleep?  – you must have been very tired after the AZ trip, so do take care and recover fully before trying to do anything extra!  It’s good, though, that you can visit the horse (and check on its care).  Sorry about the Halibut.  I hope the weather forecast didn’t show too much snow for Prescott – although I believe they are used to it there.  Well done clearing your desk.

Lynette – good that you found things to inspire your search for ancestry – a project which I always intend to begin and never really get started.  I hope you will enjoy doing it and find some notable ancestors!

AQ – love the long distance key-hunt – I hope it works for Annette now she is neither rushed with going nor so tired after returning.

Sue – thanks for link to the Dorking Cockerel and Roman signpost!  I like Geograph site – like to look at places I am visiting before I go for first time.   I hadn’t noticed the signpost link between my Kestrel and the Caerlaverock bird post until Annette mentioned them together!  Enjoy your walk in Ashdown Forest today – we liked it when we went there once on holiday – and of course had to play Pooh Sticks!

    A hedgeful of Caerlaverock Sparrows:

and an acrobatic Blue Tit – not only hanging horizontal, but thinks he’s an owl with feet facing one way and head the other!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Margo sorry to hear you're not getting a decent night sleep.  I'm the same though OH rarely away but if he is I can't settle properly.

Annette I have to make notes sometimes for short replies so hope you did too!

Gary think I'm going to have to let you off with TT. Love the extreme measures to protect the furniture, remote controls, cables.......

  • Happy Sunday Everyone!   Cloudy here and 'no weather'. Still rather cold so have the heating on.  Laughed at AQ, and longing to know if the long distance key finding rouse works.  Lovely pics as ever from OG - how nice to see so many sparrows together.  Only yesterday we were remarking that we seem to have quite a few now, compared to a couple of years ago when they were becoming worryingly rarer.  Also the cute Blue Tit - perhaps he's practicing for 2012 & the Olympics!

Saw this rather strange story yesterday, about a clever (?) kitty:

  • Now I've read back on the last thread...

dibnlib:   Welcome Back!  You can see how much you've been missed. Glad you are OK now.

OG:   Great pics of the Kestrel - nice that he/she stayed still while you took the pics.

Gary:   Oh, more cute pics of Miss Toffee - and the barricades!  We had a Border Collie puppy once who ate all the cables and plugs in the kitchen where she was corralled.  In the end, we put lots of neat mustard on them and she stopped chewing !!

margo:  Your meal sounds lovely.  Glad you enjoyed yourself and laughed, too. I think cats will drink just about any water they can find, especially if its somewhere they are not supposed to.

Wendy:  You gave me a great mental picture of a whole legion of Roman soldiers, turning neatly around a modern roundabout as they marched!!!

Alan:  We saw the Comic Relief Dance Competition too, and it was a good laugh - always full of admiration for these celebs who will do a 'turn' for charity.  And the organisers go to such lengths to make it look good. Have been enjoying the series about Madagascar lately, with Attenborough doing the commentary. Such colourful birds and animals, it's a magical series and I do recommend it  (those of you not in UK will have to look out for it later, its a real treat). OH watched the Man United Match yesterday, of course, and although Crawley did not win, they put up a good fight and at least they have had a great day out and made a lot of money out of it.

Sorry if I've missed anyone out - I have to dash off now and hoover round before visitors.   Have a Good Day.

  • Good morning Lindybird and thanks for the link to that cute little cat.  What a face really made me smile.  I wonder why he likes being in confined spaces.

We have also been watching Madagascar I am a great fan of David Attenborough and his commentaries.  He is just marvellous for his age and I always think BBC do natore programmes so well.  Just watched one at the moment and recording the others to watch when OH gets back from Glasgow.  Crawley did well I thought and as you say it would have given the club welcome funds.

Enjoy your visit from Son and Girlfriend.

  • aquilareen  my OH same as your Daughter 2, I ask the same things when he loses things.  Always amazing how many times he has said it couldn't possibly be there and of course it is.  Good laugh about your positive thought for Daughter in case she has lost something at the present time.

  • Good morning Trish 2 much better night for me.  Think the 2 glasses of red wine had something to do with it.  Perhaps I should try the same remedy tonight.  Last night on my own so should get back to normal tomorrow.

    Margobird

  • Margo - that sounds like an excellent plan.

Off walking soon with OH and Mia. Dull and damp here - most of yesterday's snow has gone.
