At 1.30pm on Friday 3rd April 2009 a new male osprey arrived at Loch Garten and began to woo EJ who has had a difficult time at Loch Garten since she arrived on June 16th 2003 having been evicted from her own nest.
At the time we said that we would give the new male time to settle in before passing judgent. As the season darws to a close maybe it is the time to say what Odin has come to mean to you and how he compares to previous Loch Garten males like OVS, Henry and Ollie?

Did no one add the Odin feeding the chicks video?
So Odin has brought in NINE fish today. Will he bring another and set a new personal record?
Have we but Odin's Ode in here? Well we have now. See Odin's Ode
Good Idea putting it on here, Tiger.
Odin did a magnificent job of protecting his chicks this year on the day [30th June] they were ringed and tagged by Roy Dennis.
On the main RSPB blog page Richard Thaxton wrote:
"Once the second chick was fitted with its bling, Ian took it back up to the nest, and you will not have seen this either but at that point Odin returned brandishing a fish and made a determined swoop at Ian atop the ladder. He didn’t see it, he was too busy concentrating, but the ladder-detail beneath him looking up, saw it and heard the swoooosh of Odin’s wings as he made his pass. If no other, this was our cue to get out of there asap, to enable Odin to bring that fish in and for the family to get on with feeding. As you will have seen, no sooner were we back from the nest, than both EJ and Odin were reunited with their brood."
However, Scylla remembers that when Odin landed on the nest with the fish he unfortunately landed on Bynack. This possibly further traumatised poor Bynack - even possibly delaying his recovery. We will never know for sure.
Odin The Magnificent - 13th July 2011 - delivered fish for his family at 1907 and then went to watch over them whilst they ate
Odin helped protect the nest well this afternoon, while a persistent intruder upset both EJ and Bynack. He brought an afternoon fish in, which obviously caught the eye of our intruder, and before Odin could release it EJ and Odin were calling and mantling. This continued for some time, before Odin flew off to sort the intruder out, taking his catch with him. It was only when all finally calmed down (even Bynack had called and mantled!) that Odin brought the fish back. Bynack immediately mantled and attacked Odin. He may have thought the intruder had landed, or he maybe he was desperate to get at the fish. Bynack had several goes at poor Odin who decided life was safer off the nest and left. Bynack continued to mantle and call, but ignored the fish!
