Odin

At 1.30pm on Friday 3rd April 2009 a new male osprey arrived at Loch Garten and began to woo EJ who has had a difficult time at Loch Garten since she arrived on June 16th 2003 having been evicted from her own nest.

At the time we said that we would give the new male time to settle in before passing judgent. As the season darws to a close maybe it is the time to say what Odin has come to mean to you and how he compares to previous Loch Garten males like OVS, Henry and Ollie?

Thought to be Scandinavian by whom? I think that is just an urban legend which grew up because of the name he was giving which I understand sounded a bit like Ollie.

Hi Tiger, I read this and thought back to Richard's comments in 2009 when Odin first was named.  I looked it up on the blogs and this is what Richard said.  I presume this is why it is thought that maybe Odin is from Scandinavia and it also ties in with the O for Ollie and Olive:

"The new Loch Garten male has been with us since Friday afternoon now and is doing all the right things.  Fetching fish, mating, nest scraping and nest refurbishment.  Looking good so far.

He's un-ringed and there are two possible explanations for that.

    1. Given that there are now c.200 pairs of ospreys, it is not always possible for those that ring them, to get around to all those known nests at ringing time, which is a brief window of a few weeks when chicks are between 4-6 weeks old, plus there will be some nests for sure that are not known.  So he could be a Scottish bird from a Scottish nest.

    2. Equally, he could be a bird from another population, from further north, heading back there, to Scandinavia maybe, where the osprey population is larger than ours and where less ringing work is carried out.  He's perhaps just passed through Scotland en route home and has lucked upon unattached EJ at her nest and thought she will do nicely thank you.

Without leg ring letters to act as a cue like for EJ, VS and HV and given this possible connection with Scandinavia, the Norse maybe, we're calling him Odin. It's also fits with previous examples of osprey naming alliteration such as Ollie and Olive.

    More news anon.

  • Sheryl : Thanks for researching that. I knew that it had been stated that there was a possibility that he was Scandinavian. It fits in with his personality. Odin the Magnificent. A Norse god.

So with a male osprey supposedly around the big question is "Is it Odin?"

Had it been Odin - EJ would certaily have let us know and he would have been in with a fish. Spain you think, maybe. I really do hope he's across The Channel by now . How long would he take to travel north from the south coast I wonder mmmmm

An osprey is capable of flying from France to Loch Garten in one day but  I have not seen one do that yet.

Still there have been at least five   legendary very long flights.

Longest is by Belle in the USA, then Nimrod and 9 (98),  SSK  and of course Deshar

  • It's not early April yet, so there's still plenty of time for Odin to fly back to Loch Garten.

Warning!  This post contains atrocious spelling, and terrible grammar.  Approach with extreme edginess.

  • The fate of the wounded KS is now haunting me, let's pray for a peaceful discussion over ownership if/when Odin arrives.

  • I can't find what you mean by the wounded KS  What has happened?

  • Who or what is  KS SCYLLA ?  I'm with you PATILY

  • Hi Patily and Cirrus  KC was a bird that had Odin's problem. Here is the story

  • Odin must have spent one of the unhapiest nights of his life. He just looks so frustrated. He sky danced for most of the night according to the update thread
