I am not sure if we should have separate threads for Rothes and Mallachie. If people feel we should the best start them right away.
The first data has been published on Google Earth and immediately it is amazing how much further Rothes has flown that Mallachie.

I always thought that Rothes knew exactly what she was doing. Making a thorough exploration of her African route before making a bee line for the sturgeon fish farm.
I have always believed that Rothes would come back to Scotland in 2011
Here is an interesting report from 2003
Monday 4 August came and suddenly another intruder! Henry is mantling, White EJ is mantling, the intruder attempts to land. A closer look and it has a ring. A red leg ring with the letters 7J. From the ring we find out it is a male chick hatched at a nest 50 km from Loch Garten in 2001. He is only two years old and back in Scotland causing trouble already! Henry, remembering how he lost the nest to a young unringed male all those months ago, was not letting go of White EJ that easily! Red 7J knew when he was beaten and White EJ knew she had made the right choice.
You should recognise as red 7J better as Nimrod. Now here is him intruding on Loch Garten as a two year old in August. Thus Rothes has lots of time.
Admittedly Nimrod is not known for being early :) :)
Hi Richard
It was me that 2 years ago that instigated tracking down Dr Jones. My cousin-in-law was in the fish farming business and had the necessary contacts to find out who owned the Sturgeon farm.
Dr Jones might well like to know that Rothes is back if you've still got his email address. As I recall he was talking about branding one of his caviar products as Osprey in honour of the visit. Could be some useful publicity for him to know that she's back. I also recall at the time that none of his workers managed to spot Rothes because of the dense woodland around the farm.

TeeJay You best post that on the main blog here as Richard does not read this blog as far as I know
Hmmm. Now where have we seen these fish tanks before?

Wow she found her stop over from 2 years ago! Clearly she enjoyed her stay there.
I wonder if she took so long to decide to cross the water because if I recall correctly on her migration south she crossed at a wide part and was flying over water for a long time. She didn't want to make that mistake again. This time she found a narrow crossing. Smart bird!!

Thanks Tiger, I've done it. Although I dip in occasionally to this thread I'm not a regular follower so I was unaware of the protocol.
Interesting: admittedly not really enough points per day to be definitive, but it looks as if she is using much the same regular roosts as she did on the way south.
(tried to insert snip from GoogleEarth to illustrate this, but site still not co-operating)
Anyone any good at writing songs? Like "Rothes is coming home"......a bit like Frank Skinner's 1996 football song?
