Tracking Rothes and Mallachie

I am not sure if we should have separate threads for Rothes and Mallachie. If people feel we should the best start them right away.

The first data has been published on Google Earth and immediately it is amazing how much further Rothes has flown that Mallachie.

  • OK, now we have Mallachie at B and Rothes at A. Interesting !

  • Going back to when Nethy left the UK at the end of September last year both Rothes and Mallachie could meet up where Rothes is now and if Mallachie needs any help in her fishing skills maybe her big sister will help.  They could spend 2 or 3 weeks there and still be further south than Nethy was last year.

    Taking it steady...

The latest data we have is only up until 6am yesterday morning and shows Nethy spent the night on the banks of the River Charente.

Part of a map showing how close Nethy was on 2/10 compared with where Rothes is now so they have plenty of time to get to Senegal or where ever they will end up.   Note the temperature down there this morning

  • Thanks Cirrus for putting that on as you say very interesting.  Perhaps our 3 gorgeous girls are not so far from one another.

  • Thanks everyone for all the great maps etc.

  • A map of the area where Mallachie rested up for a while.  We don't know how long for yet until the map gets updated again or Richard tells us.   There are a few blobs that look as if they could be ponds or something and the water mill  (?Ferme du Moulin) at the bottom right..

  • Thanks for the map Teresa as you say it does look as though there is a like there.  It is going to be so exciting to see another update as and and when Richard has the time.

  • Thanks for map again Teresa. If you zoom in on those ponds on GE, some of them look a bit dried out though - the Pays de Caux is a chalk landscape which soaks up surface water. As the ponds seem to have no inlet or outlet, they could be dewponds.

As Richard said Mallachie was on the move again when last heard from, I'm guessing we'll find she's stopped somewhere on the River Seine for some R&R. That would be much more promising territory for her - for Brits, think of the Wye Valley with a somewhat bigger river.

  • Having been on watching duty at loch garten this past week I hav'nt been able to sit down and see for myself the terrain where our beloved birds have been resting up at.Of course we have had the overall view on the sattelite map at the centre and Richard has been telling us the exact locations, however i was astounded to hear mallachie spent the night in reditch which is only 25 mins from where I live.So theres me at loch garten while she is near my home,I have to say I had a chuckle to myself. So glad to hear both tagged birds have made their 1st cross channl flight successfully and I'm sure garten will have also been successfull.Good luck girls i'll watch your movements with keen interest.

If only I were a bird! Ah,but eating caterpillars?

  • I don't know whether they are dew ponds or not but they do show on the map as ponds and the map was created during 2007-2008.  The Pays de Caux is the same landscape as our White cliffs of Dover.  A very interesting read so thank you for telling me about them.  I just put the maps up so people have a different aspect of it after looking at google.
