Weekly Chat, Sunday, January 30,2011

What ho everyone! Lazy day for the most part - girding myself for the busy week ahead - oh for a week with no appointments, no projects, no visitors - but as they, say 'be careful what you wish for.'    Several folks added pix of Lily, Phoebe, and anonymous eagles on the last page or two of the previous thread, plus some quickie posts to wind up the week (AQ may have melted by the time you read this).   In the meantime, here's wishing Andy Murray the best at the Australian Open - it'll be over by the time I wake up.

Have a good Sunday all.

  • Groundhog Day is one of my favourite films:

  • Love the Groundhog!!!!

Just come on to see if Diane & Gary are OK -  Thanks for letting us know that you are still there, Diane, and not been swept away by the ice!  Hopefully Gary will be the same and none the worse.  It sounded just terrrible and we had reports on our News of your weather, but now they seem to be concentrating mostly on the Australian crisis.   Thinking of them tonight and hoping its been over hyped or something.

My OH has gone out to do a Charity Quiz with Sis in-law, but I had to cry off, as although he is croaking a bit he is recovering now and its me who is coughing all the time.  Went to the Cinema this afternoon and got through a lot of jelly babies trying not to cough too much. ( Mine is a dry cough & I keep getting a pain behind my eyes, like a weird headache).

We enjoyed the film and will put a review on here tomorrow.

Keep Safe, Everyone around the world.

  • Heelloooooooo everyone

Great to hear Diane is doing OK. We are fine here. Thanks everyone for the thoughts.

We had about 5 inches of snow in the first round then slush and freezing rain today. Very messy but nowhere near as bad as they were predicting or that other places got. We didn't even loose power. Problem at the moment is weight of snow/ice on roofs. A lot of commercial buildings have collapsed (many have flat roofs) and I know of at least 2 commercial horse barns that the roofs have caved in (not all horses were Ok either) I've had someone get snow off the roof of the house here. It's only 10 years old and well built but it was starting to get me.

Just been busy trying to get rid of the stuff today as it's going to freeze hard tonight.

Hope everyone else is doing OK. Catch up later.

  • I'm with you Alan, groundhog day is a great film

  • Annette – decided not to watch Thunderstorms video – flashing lights don’t do me any favours!  That Australian cyclone is moving on so fast – but I suppose with 180mph winds it would be!  Now I see there have been freaky thunderstorms in North of South Australia, which is also expected to feel the tail end of the cyclone – sheesh, not good!  I think AQ should be okay down in Adelaide.

Lindy – sorry about the cough – pleased your OH is improving – need to both be well for Sweetpea’s visit at the weekend!

I thought I saw a post from Gary when I came on – now can’t see it and Lindy’s is last!  Is it me, or are posts disappearing?  Aha!  Refreshed the page, and there he is again – so I wasn’t imagining it!  Welcome, Gary, so pleased to read that you are okay.  Saw news footage last night of someone in Connecticut  clearing earlier snow off his roof to allow for weight of the new lot!  Sad about horses where barns collapsed – happened with cattle in north of Scotland a year ago – can’t always predict which barns will go and which will hold up safe.  I hope your horses are safe, dry and warm – and take care over this coming cold night.

OH just informed me that the Chinese New Year starts tomorrow – year of the Rabbit!  So Happy New Year, again!  I think that’s our third new year in five weeks!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Cyclone Yasi crossed the coast at midnight at Mission Beach, 2 hours drive south of Cairns. It missed the bigger cities. So far no reports of deaths. There is sure to be widespread devastation though. It’s early morning and it will take time for reports to filter through. Yasi is moving inland over areas north of the previously flood-saturated areas (just so everyone can be affected by the weather gods). Eventually it will become a low over Alice Springs and swing around bringing rain to northern SA and later Victoria.

Glad to hear Diane & Gary are OK.

Lynette - Do take care of your eyes. I think I would rather be deaf than blind. My father was blind by the end of his life.

A warm sticky day of 34C max. I must exert myself for a library books & food shopping expedition.

  • AQ - do take care going out in that heat!  Make sure you buy plenty of salads - no-one wants to cook in that weather!  I see Cyclone Yasi is now downgraded to category 2 or 3 (depending which report you read!).

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Sorry I haven't had chance to come back on here again today.  Met elderly lady, who lives nearby, when I was shopping, so gave her a lift back home, helped her take her shopping into her house. She wanted to talk, but I still had my shopping in the car boot, so invited her for afternoon tea, which then spread to dinner and OH took her home about half an hour ago. She is a lovely lady ( 84 ) and very independant with two daughters who visit regularly and a wide circle of friends, but just seemed to want company today.

Council are coming for furniture next Wednesday and tell me that if they can, they will find a home for it all through organisations they have contacts with.

Diane and Gary, so pleased to hear you are both safe.

AQ,  Your very high temperatures seem to have been continuing for a long time now. Those temperatures must be really draining especially as it is still so hot during the night. I hate to think what damage, Yasi will have left in it's wake, when it finally leaves.

    'See' you all tomorrow.

  • Hi, so many to answer to so forgive if I just send a general thanks for all your updates etc.  Eye a little better but can only concentrate for short periods so have tried to rest it during the day. Managed choir practice oktonight but felt it towards the end of the evening.

AQ - glad you are missing the worst of the cyclone but feeling for all those up there in Cairns and west and north .  Friends who are Sydney for three months went up to see her son who is based outside of Brisbane and all seemed well.

Diane - glad you are surviving your ice storm. Keep warm.

George love your pic of the goldfinches on your feeder.

All of you thanks for your wishes re eye, its just a matter of time.

Took some pics of the Norfolk eagles earlier this afternoon and of Lily's den and Phoebe's babies.  All coming up on next post.
