Morning all:  Long day at the rose garden - poor Robert who supervises the volunteers has been fighting off a bug and a couple of us stayed on longer than usual to help him clean up stuff.  I'm sure I'll be stiff tomorrow. Not as many folks showed up as last year and some of the beds were pruned by city employees which means we'll have to go over those beds again since they did a fairly perfunctory job.

Watching Mad Men (Netflix rental video of first season).  Great viewing when you're too tired to think. Take care all and have a nice Sunday.

  • Congrats to Phoebe. I missed the hatch but understand the time was 10:53.

  • Kellogs, great news and great pictures.   Just replied to our new poster, Sugar, to thank for the news of Phoebe but didn't look further up for your pics.

  • Welcome back Diane and hope you feel refreshed.

  • I had just opened up the cam to see the little hummer break through ... what luck! :)  Here's a capture of Phoebe feeding her newborn:

Welcome, Sugar ... hope you enjoy it over here :)

  • Hey everybody: Another day of whizzing about - but stopped at the Monarch Butterfly refuge on the way home. It was a warm, sunny day and when the sun is high(ish - being our winter season) the butterflies wake up and flutter about - thousands of them!  It's like being surrounded by a flurry of golden petals.  Anyway, they'll leave for Central America in February and was a nice little detour in the midst of a busy day.  OH picked up desk chair, which I'm now sitting on.

Welcome Sugar.  Thanks for the news of Phoebe (1 or 2s) newest. Very cute pix.

Hallo to everyone else. Hope you all have a lovely Tuesday.

  • Hi, all. Hope everyone is happy and well. When I arrived home from Indianapolis, the big red-tailed hawk screeched a welcome at me when I got out of the car!!! He made a brief fly around and stared at us. My friends jumped when he screeched (they drove me home) and were amazed at the size of him. He'd been sitting in the pine tree next to my driveway so he was really close. I think he must be staying in there a lot. The pine needles must give him cover so that he can watch for prey without being seen. The other types of trees are all completely bare here. It's wonderful to have him living so close.

Thanks to all who welcomed me back. Glad to see that Phoebe has a new baby.

Margo: Pleased that Billy Whizz is thriving and becoming a bit more sociable.
AQ: When I lived in Indianapolis, they were always changing the bus system, and my schedules were never improved!
Alan: Oh, that poor drunken owl. I'm glad that the police took it to a bird expert before it was hit by a car or suffered some other terrible fate! Thanks for the eagle and Starr Ranch owl links.
WendyB: Hope the Spey Bay area folks don't get flooded.
dibnlib: Amazing kestrel pic. I hope you are getting stronger every day.
Brenda: Hi. It was misty and damp here today, too. No sunshine, just intensifying fog and drizzle. We are due for another snow storm on Wednesday night into Thursday.

Lindy:  I'm going to wait out the snow storm by de-cluttering my house. Way too many piles of paper here. I'm going to follow the good example set by you, OG, Annette, AQ, and Brenda... Where does it all come from?!? I think it all multiplied while I was gone. :-( Oh dear, a burnt finger and a bruised arm for you?!? You did have a bad day. I hope everything is okay now. I have minor bruises from my friends' 7 dogs who were always greeting me exuberantly and jumping into my lap. The photo of your spring garden was just lovely! Glad you got to see Tomasz.

OG: I hope you aren't in any danger from the river flooding! Stay safe. I loved your goldfinch and siskin photos. Just wonderful! I hope your son is doing well.
Auntie: I so hope you have recovered from your illness. I feel so sorry for you having to work at such a high-pressure job while feeling awful yourself. Do be good to yourself and get as much rest as possible.

Annette: The monarch butterfly refuge sounds awe inspiring. What a lovely experience. I hope your landscaping is coming along nicely, as well as the office remodeling. Sorry to hear that the mountain lion was hit by a car. Such glorious animals. Every year lots of people hit deer here; can be really dangerous. You mentioned Prairie Home Companion. I love that radio show. I try to listen every week.

Just read that scientists plan to clone a Woolly Mammoth. Seriously! They say they could have viable DNA and a workable process. As much as I love science, I don't think I approve of that plan. http://bigthink.com/ideas/26567

Will try to check in later. Everyone stay happy, healthy, and safe.

  • I considered bringing home this dog. Her name is Dandy, and she looks a bit like a fox. She immediately decided she loved me and remained at my side or on my lap the whole time I was in Indianapolis. I received many, many doggy kisses. But like George G, I think I need to put up some fencing before I can get a dog.

  • Diane: She is a real poppet...go for it and get that fencing sorted out soon. She has ears but not quite the body of Daisy May my avatar. She is an English Bull Terrier a breed with a bit of a stigma here in U.K. I keep banging on about nurture not nature but with her it is as she is as daft as a brush!!!!
