After seeing the 3 eggs on the webcam this morning, I just had to get to Rutland Water a.s.a.p. It was misty when I set off and the traffic on the A1 was horrendous as usual but as soon as I reached the Lyndon Reserve all that was forgotten. I just confirmed with the staff that I did indeed see 3 eggs this morning and then set off to walk to Shallow Water hide. The hide was empty at first so managed to get the best seat. I think 5R was incubating at first and Mrs was on the perch to the left. She then gave the most amazing flying display and dropping down into the water to wash and drag her talons. She then went back to the perch and preened for a while before returning to the nest to give 5R a break. He then flew off to the further perch to the left and remained there for the rest of my visit.
Apart from the ospreys I saw a buzzard fly low past the trees on the opposite bank. A lapwing was giving an amazing flying and calling display right in front of the hide. There was also a pair of teal feeding close by. Then some cattle walked past in the water and disturbed a pair of Egyptian geese with 5 chicks. Absolutely wonderful there today. No superlatives are great enough.
