Weekly Chat, Sunday January 9, 2010

Busy all day - will catch up tomorrow. Have a good Sunday all (don't forget to check last pages of previous thread. Somebody has been posting photos of puppies again!)

  • WATER IS BACK ON !!!    Hooray!!

  • Morning all,

Linda : Thanks for the monday smiles. Liked the upturned iron one. Very ingeneous.

Annette : Best thing to do with wood that needs assembling into something is just dont bother and place it neatly in a woodburner instead. It will save a whole lot of anguish.

We had an early frost this morning but that has all gone now and it is cloudy but dry. The bird bath was frozen for the first time in a while. Cureent temp 2.8c

  • Dreich day so far – but at least enough rain to wash away the remaining white stuff.  Just written an article for the church mag – new ed asked for our reflections.  Had to look up how long we did it – six years, so told them it’s very Biblical that we begin our rest in the seventh year!!  OH will shop at Tesco’s this morning and go to the tip this afternoon – I guess I might bake something, or not if I feel lazy!

Annette – earlier you said “Today, we'll put together a nice little desk”, later it became “Poor OH currently surrounded by sheets of instructions and bits of this and that while in process of assembling my desk” – explain!!  “Collywobbles” is actually in the OED – derived from Colic + Wobbles – “rumbling in the intestines; feeling of apprehension”.  I always thought it had something to do with eating too much cauliflower – but perhaps it does!!  Son has a few possibilities and is investigating a particular job – will email you.  Can’t comment on Downton Abbey – was recording it but then missed a couple, so deleted what we had – will watch out for second time around!!

Kelly – thanks for link to penguin  – now need to work out times when they and I are both awake!

Lindy – sorry about water problem!  No laundry = no ironing, if that’s any help, but not nice to miss a shower.  (Later – see it’s back on – good.)  Thanks for smiles - I think the coffee percolator was my favourite – Iron Brew - a new take on Scotland’s favourite drink!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Back again. I typed in a whole load of stuff then lost my connection.

Linda : glad your water is back on.

Sun has come out here now and the starlings have been having a bath and the resident robin is still around none the worse from his battle with the wagtail the other day. Temp is now 3.7c and rising.

The winter White Tailed Eagle camerin in Estonia has been moved and is now closer to the food. A young Golden Eagle has been seen there as well:

  • Well I spoke too soon, as actually, when I got ready for my long awaited  'hose down in the shower' as Annette calls it,  I found that there is not enough pressure for it to heat up!  (its electric) -- I stood there forlornly in the buff for a while, then got dressed after a good facial wash & brush up!

Also, sadly no excuse for not ironing, as a full basket already awaits me, as I thought I might tackle some of it during the weekend, but I lazed around too much......  Off to do it now, might find something on the recording device to watch to take my mind off it!   By the way, enjoyed the repeat of the Polar Bears on the new cams on Sunday afternoon, what a delightful bit of filming.  And they are so clever! (the Bears, that is, not just the cameras.... of dear I'm in a knot now so I'm off.......)

    Thanks for the link, Alan.

  • Morning all ... very frosty first thing, but it soon turned to heavy rain! OH returned unscathed from his ski trip ... complaining about rain spoiling the snow, but it seems not to have spoiled his enjoyment :-)

OG - lovely yellowhammer pics ... not a bird that appears in the gardens here, but I have seen them nearby. Glad to hear that your son is enjoying his social life, and fingers crossed that a job is just around the corner!

Alan - thanks for the Derby peregrine captures ... I have been watching quite regularly and both adults seem to be around a fair bit just now. Hopefully it bodes well for the new season.

SheilaFE - what a worry you have had with Aged Aunty and homecare arrangements ... its good that the church people are so caring.

Linda - great Monday Smiles ... I love the iron one !!! No water and no shower ... oh dear :-(((

Must go and do some HW ... don't have to think about lunch as I made leek and potato soup earlier, also baked some brown soda bread ... smells delicious!

Thanks to everyone for chat etc

    Take care.

Joan - avid bird and nature watcher in Northumberland!

  • Good morning to all and thanks for all the chat.  Have just caught up with the end of last week's posts and thanks to everyone for all the capturesand beautful photos of various birds as well as the dog..  Gary  the puppies are just gorgeous and Lindybird Monday Smiles made me do just that.  Sorry for not replying individually but brain not really in gear yet.

Had a horrendous journey up to Worcestshire on Friday, rain all the way and some of it torrential.  It was also very foggy.  Our actual journey time was quite good though as it was just under 3 hours.  My neice drove and wasn't phased by the weather conditions at all.  Booked into the hotel and then went off to see my sister and her husband in even thicker fog.  My sister came out of hospital on Thursday evening so at least we could see her at home.  We were all upset to see how this illness has aged her.  She looked extremely tired and has a terrible scar at the moment and obviously some of hair had to be shaved off.  Her husband has had a terrible time over the past 3 months.  He hadn't told us just how bad she was.  Had to do everything for her even feeding her as she wasn't able to do so for herself.  He took her to the doctor every week for nearly 3 months and eventually pleaded with the doctor to send her for a scan on her head which eventually he did and of course that showed right away what the problem was.  He said to the doctor that she was acting like an 80 year old and not the 62 years that she is.  He had lost an awful lot of weight too but no wonder after what he has been through. The part of the brain that was operated on controls emotions and he said that not once has she broken down in tears and is matter of act at what she has been through.  Don't know whether this will change.  The whole thing from the time she bacame ill right up to when she was rushed into hospital seems to be a complete muddle.  On the night she was discharged the pharmacy did not even have all the pills she required.  At the moment she is on 12 pills a day for various reasons.  Having to take anti seizure pills for a while yet as her brain is still a bit swollen.    Her husband has now found a lump on her leg and the doctor at the hospital said it would be scanned.  Just like the physiotherapy that she was supposed to have every day , this did not happen.  Because they were always moving her round there were 2 days when she didn't even get her breakfast.  All in all a terrible experience for her although she was unaware of a lot of the things that happened.  My sister, her daughter and myself are obviously worried that the cancer is spreading but until they do the scan we won't know.  Now she is home her husband is going to write to the hospital and complain strongly about everything that seems either not to have been done and whey they were told initially it was inoperable.  He told us how hard it had been for him watching her go downhill so fast and said that there were some things that happened that he wouldn't talk about as it would be embarrasing for my sister and for him.  She is now waiting for an appointment for the radiotherapy treatment which she will be having for 10 days.  This will mean a 2 hour round drive each day so I think she will feel poorly again as they have warned her she will. There is a long way to go yet for her.  We went to see her again on Saturday until about 2 when we left to come home.  Thankfully a much better journey home although it had turned much colder.  On Sunday morning we had a terrific frost here which took most of the morning to go.

OH looked after Billy Whizz well and was quite amused by some of his antics.  The sun was out on Saturday and he was rolling round on our patio thoroughly enjoying a bit of warmth for a change.  He has found himself a nice little place when the sun is out under one of our pine trees and after he has had his wash settles down for a couple of hours snooze.  Haven't seen him yet today but no doubt he will turn up soon.

Hope you are all well and thanks for your thoughts while I was away.  I came back quite upset and the temptation is to keep ringing but have to be careful as she is getting lots of calls and visits and I don't want her to get too tired.  We will be going to see her again once she has had her treatment and recovered from that.

  • OG  liked your pic and pleased to hear son doing ok. Dillon has a cuddly pig and of course it is called Pinky - what else!!!!    Mid defrosting freezer at the mo (should have been done in Nov buit had to be put off till I was more able). OH kept talking about doing it but that was as far as it got, It is an old frz and would like a new frost free but they are few and far between unless you want an under the worktop size. hotppoint do a larger size but felt it was overpriced. Anyway we rarely replace things until we have to so  will persevere with this one until it packs up. I am not wishing it away but it is 15 years old so has done us well!!!!1

  • LINDY what a nuisance about your shower, hope it is fine next time.

For my money the Polar Bear programme was the best wildlife thing shown recently. the Bears with Gordon Buchannan was good but preferred the other as it was totally about the bears and not the cameramen. Also loved the music and David Tennants narrative.
