Weekly Chat, Sunday January 9, 2010

Busy all day - will catch up tomorrow. Have a good Sunday all (don't forget to check last pages of previous thread. Somebody has been posting photos of puppies again!)

  • White again!  Heavy hail last evening – thought it would wash away, but the precipitation was the other stuff – about 3cm.  Looked at local forecasts – today we have Carlisle’s weather instead of Silloth, which is our usual!  Birds are looking at us as if to say “What have you done?” – at least a dozen Blackbirds, squabbling among themselves too.  Won’t try to get to church – my walking just isn’t safe on snow, especially if the hailstones are still rolling around under it.  BTW Pastoral assistant didn’t come to ask why we hadn’t been at church recently; we think he came to find out whether we had been aggrieved by poor communication about magazine – anyway, I told him!!

While I was writing the above, OH called me to kitchen to see the Yellowhammers – here is his photo of the two of them:

And one which I took – much easier to get one bird sitting still than two at the same time!

Trish – we know parts of N Yorkshire – used to live near Wetherby and take trips to the Moors and Dales, and recently have stayed a few times on a farm near Northallerton and enjoyed rediscovering the North Yorkshire Moors.  Of course, it’s also not far from Daughter who is just north of Darlington.

Lindy – no digestive biscuit for Dog from Auntie this time?  I hope you are less busy over the weekend.

Gary – that wasn’t just one thought – I saw two, and loved them both!! They are sooo cute.

Brenda – not “real” spring cleaning – never been keen on that – it was just to do bits which cleaner misses (she’s actually very good, but 2 hours doesn’t give a lot of time) and, on my part, to try to get rid of some things!

Annette – thanks for setting us off this morning – please take some time out today!!!

Ospreys Rule OK, but Goldfinches come a close second!

  • Morning all,

Annette : Thanks for starting us off and take it easy.

Gary : Thanks for the lovely puppy pics.

OG : We had a dry day yesterday and it looks as thought its going to be dry again today after early frost. Sorry you have the bad weather yet again. Nice pics of the yellowhammers. That's one bird we definately dont have around here.

nice and sunny morning with temp slowly rising. 1.9c at the moment. We are gaining about 3 minutes extra daylight per day now so at least it is getting lighter in the evenings and mornings. Yesterday we went to Stamford and had a wander around the shops. I was surprised at how many people there were around despite it being January and all the doom and gloom around.   I expect we will be going out soon and then probably watch the FA cup match between Man U and Liverpool later.

    Have a good sunday all.

  • Peregrine preening in the sunshine on Derby Cathedral webcam at the moment:

    http://www.derby.gov.uk/dccwebdev/museum/peregrine/webcam2.htm

  • Frosty morning when we went to church earlier, but the sun is shining and it was 3c when coming home.

Annette, As always, thanks for starting the week off again.

OG,  Hail stones and snow are not a good combination underfoot. I hope a thaw sets in for you. Love your yellowhammer photographs. I would guess that your Pastoral Assistant understood quite plainly how you felt by the time he left !

Alan, Thanks for the Derby peregrine pictures. We were going out for lunch, but seeing I was born on the Wirral and  have been a Liverpool suporter all my life, no matter where we have lived, I will be watching the match, but feel today will not be their day, unless Kenny Dalglish can work miracles.

  • OG  loved your pics of Yellowhammers, you get a wonderful variety of birds in your garden and it is great to see photos of them.

Getting more confident and rarely use crutches in house, and this am didn't even take them when I went for a swim. Needed them for church as we have snow and knew we would be standing around for a while afterwards. Anyway things much easier than this time last week although by evening I really am quite tired and achy.

  • Hi folks, another week already!   Thanks Annette for yet again starting us off. Hope your day goes OK.

OG - what gorgeous pics of the yellowhammers, you are lucky you can attract them. We don't seem to attract the lesser well known birds although I have put out the niger feeder today so we'll see what happens!

Had a very easy morning, left church alone as its only All-Age today.  Daughter needed a good lie-in.  Working when she got up but has now left for a Home Group Shared Lunch Social so shall get a couple of hours relaxation before carrying on when she gets back. Its a hard life for those still at work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alan - liked your Perigrine pic -  lovely and sunny here although cold.  Just looked at LOtL and this is the scene at present

Heard Scotland had had another snowfall.

  • Happy new week, ALL!  Thanks, ANNETTE, for starting it off :)

Looks like Winter has found me.  Started storming this morning ... expected to get 10-15 cm. and quite a bit has already accumulated.  ARRGH! ... at least I don't have to go out today.

OG:  Beautiful pic of the Yellowhammers.

Enjoy the football, ALAN.  Good thing my bro and I live apart ... he's a Manchester U fan and Liverpool is my team.

Thanks, LYNETTE, for the LotL pic ... I haven't been able to get the cam(s) :(((

The penguin babies in the Antarctic are growing up fast!  Pretty soon we'll have trouble following them around as they become more mobile.

I caught Lily yesterday taking care of an itch :)))  Sometimes wish I was bear and could hibernate for the Winter! LOL  I found for download Gordon Buchanan's program, "The Bear Family and Me," about Lily and Hope.  Fabulous documentary!

    Enjoy your Sunday!

  • Just seen a crested tit on the LG feeder cam.  What a treat!

  • Hello everyone.  It's me again.  Thanks for all the chat.   I have been rather preoccupied with Aged Aunty - discussions at the hospital, phone calls, visiting, worrying - which doesn't get anything done and causes colliwabbles  Now where did that word come from?  It's not one I have used in a long while, but I guess you know what I mean.  The hospital seems to have so many departments and there is a total lack of joined up writing.  She changed wards at 9.30pm on Christmas Eve as they needed her 'respiratory' bed.  That meant that her Care Manager changed also, and by Thursday last week he hadn't been to see her.  However I was told at the beginning of the week that "She may be out on Friday or Saturday".  When I visited on Thursday the news was "we have care package in hand, it will start lunch time on Friday with Meals on Wheels".   So I was content that all was in hand.  But on Friday lunchtime she was still sitting in reception waiting for transport home, and meanwhile Meals on Wheels were knocking on her door!  I will be going back down to see her on Monday when the care management company assigned to her following her initial release wants to do a routine assessment of her safety at home.  Fine.  But the Care Management person at the hospital had already done this between Christmas and New Year. However, I have to say that my Aunt's Pastoral Carer and other friends from the Church have been extremely supportive and helpful.

We have had a glorious, but chilly day today.  Blue sky, sunshine and fieldfare abound.  We have burned most of our winter wood supply which would usually last thru to the end of the winter and a bit to spare - a month's supply left.  We had another delivery today.  So we spent this afternoon stacking.  There was a lovely sunset as well.  Things are already beginning to move in the garden too, but a lot of plant life has been damaged by the cold and snow.  It will be interesting to see what comes thru in the spring.

Yet again, some lovely photos of wildlife, thank you all.  And those beautiful puppies Gary how quickly they are growing.  They are already taking on an early big doggy look!!

Yesterday, I was sent photos of another heavy snowfall from my friend near Kinross.  I could hear her exclaim the "Would you believe it" title to her email.  Her OH had to dig the car out again to get it on the road - which is a single track.

So nice to see Kelloggs again, but sorry you too are being subjected to this dreadful weather.

For you footballing types, I read (BBC News web page) that David Beckham has agreed to train with Tottenham until 10 February, but will not play for the club on loan - apparently because of complicated insurance premium arrangements.  Sad that he won't play.  I think it would be lovely to see him finish his career back in the UK.  I also read that Becks and Victoria are expecting their fourth child.

On that happy note I'll say bye for now.

  • Morning all: Lovely sunny day here; plan to go for walk when I've caught up with posts. EDIT: An hour later (just got off phone with sister):

dibnlib: Panasonic telly at hospital; awaiting future developments. I'm sure at this point (she said confidently) that they'd replace it if it gave us any more problems. I'd insist on it.  Good that you're feeling more confident gettng about.

OG/dibnlib: We received Christmas cards from my sister last Thursday - approximately one month after she posted them from Sleaford!  But cards sent from Milton Keynes (niece and nephew) arrived with no delays.  Panasonic Man arrived in rumpled clothes - did not see his underpants. He lives an hour south and goes into the LA repair shop (almost two hours south) just a few times a week.  Coming this far north is above and beyond for him, especially as 42" flat screens are considered "carry in" items (meaning we'd typically have to take it to the shop and pick it up).  Will take some pix of garden to post - thanks for thinking of that.  Pretty yellowhammers there - odd name - hammers - though.

Lynette: See Diane responded to your pix of the wild turkeys. We have them in the hills behind Santa Barbara. Think Brenda H may have a point re copyrighted pix.  Maybe a handsome Mountie will show up to extradite you to Canada?  :-)

BrendaH:  Panasonic service manager offered to get us a loaner but we weren't that worried so didn't have her persue the matter.  I think the main problem was that the "certified" Panasonic guy locally has decided to offer customer service only when he feels like it - Panasonic needs to find someone else to represent them in this area.

Diane: Hope dinner with bro and future sis-in-law was good.

Yesterday spent moving OH into front spare bedroom where he can listen to dirge-like music and where it's warmer than his previous "office" off living room (he's always cold). Today, we'll put together a nice little desk for me that we bought before Christmas so I'll finally have a place (in his old office) to keep paperwork and laptop without having to move piles of stuff from coffee table to dining table and back to coffee table, etc.  Also, I can have radio on in kitchen without disturbing him and fling windows open to let in cool air (I'm always warm).  All good stuff.

My sister was wailing about the price of gasoline there - says that even in their small car, they think twice about taking trips right now; also heard that oil heating prices have gone up a lot there since the summer.  Not good.

Thanks all for pix of various critters and for posts.  Take care and a special hallo to Margobird.
