HAPPY NEW WEEK!

I hope everyone has the best week possible.

I don't have a positive post for you all this week. The polar vortex (dangerously cold air from the Arctic) is dropping down on Indiana for the next few days. We are under an Extreme Cold Watch. The "feels like" apparent temperature will drop to 20 below zero Fahrenheit or lower in my area. That's 29 below zero Celsius. My house will be too cold for me to do anything but stay under the electric blanket and sleeping bags, read, and listen to the radio until the vortex goes home. The high winds caused a limb to fall on my power line yesterday, causing a power outage. Luckily, the very kind power crew got here within 2 hours and restored my electricity.

Lots of sweary words by me this coming week!

Love and hugs to all of you.

  • DIANE   ssooooooo pleased the power guys arrived so promptly . So sorry for the wildlife too. Hope you have hot instant  somethings for you to eat . My thoughts and prayers are with you.   Love and a massive warming hug to you too

  • {{HUGS}} Rusty: So hard for you. My mother had several strokes & the 1st one seemed terrible, -- she was paralysed down one whole side, but she did eventually manage to walk again with a frame and to talk, after several weeks of rehab. (She was in her 80s). Other patients in the hospital with her either recovered surprisingly  quickly,  or deteriorated. It's different for everyone.

Thank you for starting us off, Diane. How grim for you to be so cold. I hope its short lived, and all your critters find somewhere to shelter.

  • Glad that things are OK, ANNETTE . I've just had a text message from my Danish friends who are enjoying a holiday based in San Francisco. They are hiring a car today and driving south, where they plan on visiting a town called Solvang. They say that it was settled by Danes, originally and has lots of Danish style buildings. Looking at the map, it seems to be near Santa Barbara.

    Thinking of you, RUSTY.

Thanks to all for the chat ! I don't think that OG has been here for a week or so - maybe illness in the house or J has got a place to move to.

I'm spending too much time online - no visitors planned this week so not a lot of housework getting done. Oh dear ....

  • Thanks everyone for your thoughts,

I met my sister for coffee this morning. We both said we couldn’t do much before our thoughts went back to our friend. I have to say I think my sister is more optimistic about the situation than I am. I hope I am wrong.
I went to my French class this afternoon where we discussed the famous women on that list. People had researched different ones. It was a very interesting session.
Heather - I too have missed OGs posts. I hope all is OK there.

  • Heather:  Oh I know Solvang very well.   The kids used to live in Buellton, 10 minutes along the highway; we're only 50 minutes away on the ocean side of the mountains.  Granddaughter used to be a tour guide (age 16 then) on what they called the Honen - an old streetcar pulled by two huge Belgian horses.  She used to help get them hooked up to the wagon; had to wear a Danish-style costume and her hair in pigtails and be nice to tourists.  The same folks owned it for years then it all went downhill (Covid?  Poor management?).   Anyway, it was taken over by some other folks.  Here's the link to their website (granddaughter is not one of the girls in the gallery photos!).   THe Santa Ynez Valley is gorgeous; your friends should have a good time; lots of wineries.....    https://solvangtrolley.com/

Rusty: It may be too early for a final prognosis re your friend.   Meanwhile, watch your own blood pressure and keep going on walks with your birding friends!

Meanwhile, I'm alternating between pretending it's 2009 (Obama's first inauguration) or getting a bumper sticker decrying the election of a felon.

  • HELLO DIANE,   Thank you for starting us off again.   My , my, you must stay warm and keep hibernating untill the vortex passes.   They are predicting a weather bomb towards the weekend but where I am in the country usually misses the worst.

Been around but not on lately.   Do hope that all are keeping well and warm during these cold, gloomy snaps of winter  - ready for the next weather bomb predicted this coming weekend.

Not a lot going on here,  still trying to lose some weight before they will operate but it is a catch 22 situation.  It is slow going and meanwhile knee gets worse, still I know that I am not suffering as bad as some people are.  Going out tomorrow and being treated by dau to a birthday supper at our local Bella Italia,  got a promotion on so taking advantage of it. Following tomorrow I am going to a neighbours funeral, she lost her battle against cancer just before Christmas, so supporting her husband and son and family.   Another funeral taking part on the same day of one of our lady's from church but unable to attend.  All we can do is remember their lives and know they have gone to a better place.

Going for a pre diabetic annual checkup next month so will try and see whether they can help re weight loss as my doctor could not get me the special injections you can have as I don't qualify.

Had a problem with dau's computer last week, after working perfectly ok with internet connection before supper, she went on it afterwards and couldn't get the internet up.  Tried all week and then on the Thursday I tried disconnecting the connections at the back of it and then putting them back in and lo and behold it worked and we had the broadband connection again.   Thought I was going to have to call my tech guy in.

  • Think I am now getting control over infection - and nurse said today  that I "should be safe" from dropping the regular med which seemed to be aggrevating the problem with a known side-effect!

  • Original Goldfish,   do hope that you can get on top of the infection soon and that you will be back to some normality.    Keep warm and safe

  • Watching news and someone is signing documents without reading them. What if someone slipped another unofficial one when he was gabbling?

  • AQ:  I could think of a suitable document to slip in there.......
