Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 15 December 2024

HAPPY NEW WEEK and HAPPY FULL MOON!

The last full moon of 2024 will occur early Sunday morning  (December 15) in the US and UK. The Geminid Meteor Shower will also be peaking, although the light of the full moon may impair the view of the meteors. This moon will be the Winter Solstice moon.

Last Tuesday (the 10th), my region had multiple meteorite falls as a result of the Geminid Shower. That's when the meteors don't fully burn up in the atmosphere and instead hit the ground.

Many people had security cam and doorbell cam footage of the bright light and the flash as a meteor hit. Others heard booms, and many heard an ongoing rumble like loud thunder (sometimes accompanied by a hissing sound). People also smelled a foul odor like burning metal and smoke.

The meteorite closest to me hit just after 4:00 a.m., so I was in bed. However, I heard the long, loud thunder and my floors shook. I also smelled that ghastly odor.

Many people here didn't know about the Geminids, so they immediately concluded that war had broken out--an indication of the fear and anxiety of our political climate right now.

Everyone have a good week. Love and hugs to all.

  • Rusty - That's why I don't order anything online to be delivered to my home.  Apart from groceries, which are a bit different.  I do very occasionally order things to be delivered to a pick-up point - usually a bank of lockers near the station.  I seem to read and hear constantly about parcels being delivered to the wrong place, or being stolen from people's doorsteps.

  • Congratulations to you and your car, RUSTY !  My local FB page has quite a few people looking for parcels, receiving other folks parcels etc. It's a nuisance for you, though. I hope you'll be able to pick yours up OK.

ANNETTE - Chuckled at the video - every time I hear him speak on the radio I want to tell him to stop saying everything twice in rapid succession.

LINDY - so glad that you'll be with family at Christmas. I think they live in Hertfordshire ? Sorry if that's wrong.

OG -  I'm happy that you mentioned dips - I've been drafting a shopping list for our family meal on the 30 th. It will be here before I know it. My youngest daughter phoned me last night to  say that her OH will be at home for Christmas Day, after all. He was due to fly to Amsterdam on Christmas Eve but the company have now changed it to Boxing Day. They are delighted, of course.

AQ - Agree with LINDY regarding home grown tomatoes !

I did a silly thing this afternoon - watched an old film which left me in tears.

  • Heather - oh dear. I cry at old sad films too!

Well, it turns out that the parcel is a Christmas present from my cousin in Bristol. He rang me most concerned because he had had all the info about its whereabouts too. I was able to reassure him that I should be able to retrieve it in the morning. As it turned out we had 45 minutes on the phone having a really good catch up.

  • Heather - I cry at almost every film I ever watch ... sad, happy, funny.  My sister was the same.  And our mother.  We used to call it 'treacling'.  No idea why!

  • Another day over = another day nearer to Christmas!  And it was another shopping day – just the usual routine weekend things, but people were chasing all kinds of stuff all over the supermarket.

AQ – I hope at least some of your tomatoes survive.  Ours went on for such a long time – in fact it looks like we shall keep the last one (ripened in a dish indoors) until Christmas Day – just so we can say we did it!

RUSTY – not a good parcel experience – never heard of that arrangement before!  How nice that you are in touch with cousins – ours are very uncommunicative – except for genealogy cousin (really my Dad’s cousin and 12years older than me).

Update re GD – back at home after a “wash-out”, but daily visits to hospital right now, and possibly a resection at the end of January – much sooner than they all expected.  I think she will be glad to get it finished with.

  • Glad your Gdaughter will be alright OG - what a scare for her.

Great that your car passed with flying colours Rusty. Mine is 10 years old and doing well, too.

I cry at many films. These days I rarely cry at much else, even at funerals.

Put up various decorations and vowed to make it less, next year. Still have boxes of Christmassy china to open, lovingly collected over the years but these days only the tea/coffee mugs get used.

  • (Sung to tune of Jingle Bells)

    Dashing through the bush,
    in a rusty Holden ute,
Kicking up the dust, esky in the boot
    Kelpie by my side,
    singing Christmas songs,
It’s summer time and I am in my singlet,
    shorts and thongs.

    Oh! Jingle bells, jingle bells,
    jingle all the way.
    Christmas in Australia
    on a scorching summer’s day,
    Hey! Jingle bells, jingle bells,
    Christmas time is beaut.
Oh what fun it is to ride
    in a rusty Holden ute.

  • Translation

Holden = a make of car
Ute = abbrev of utility = American pick up truck
Esky = a portable insulated container with ice added to keep drink & food cool
    Boot = trunk in American
    Kelpie = Aussie sheepdog
Thongs = rubber footwear, flip flop

  • AQ - Thank you for giving me a smile on a miserable day.  A thong in UK usually means something rather different ... which made my smile all the broader.

  • HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE TO EVERYONE IN THE UK AND US!

The solstice occurs at 9:20 a.m. Saturday morning in the UK. I am celebrating the return of the Sun!

    HAPPY SUMMER SOLSTICE to AQ!!!

I wish you all joy, peace, and renewal!
