Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 15 December 2024

HAPPY NEW WEEK and HAPPY FULL MOON!

The last full moon of 2024 will occur early Sunday morning  (December 15) in the US and UK. The Geminid Meteor Shower will also be peaking, although the light of the full moon may impair the view of the meteors. This moon will be the Winter Solstice moon.

Last Tuesday (the 10th), my region had multiple meteorite falls as a result of the Geminid Shower. That's when the meteors don't fully burn up in the atmosphere and instead hit the ground.

Many people had security cam and doorbell cam footage of the bright light and the flash as a meteor hit. Others heard booms, and many heard an ongoing rumble like loud thunder (sometimes accompanied by a hissing sound). People also smelled a foul odor like burning metal and smoke.

The meteorite closest to me hit just after 4:00 a.m., so I was in bed. However, I heard the long, loud thunder and my floors shook. I also smelled that ghastly odor.

Many people here didn't know about the Geminids, so they immediately concluded that war had broken out--an indication of the fear and anxiety of our political climate right now.

Everyone have a good week. Love and hugs to all.

  • Here I am. The car is in the garage for its MOT (fingers crossed) and I have done a bit of cleaning this morning. The afternoon is mine to do replies and then read my RSPB magazine which has arrived.
Heather - is it 8 years since your OH died? I was a lurker then but remember it. Best to remember the happy times if you can.
Lindy - I hope you enjoy your Christmas away. It will be very different. I always go to my sisters. It seems the obvious thing to do when her children were young and now they go back “home” with their children so it is still the thing to do. If the weather is OK I will just go there and back in the day (about 25 miles each way) Trouble is, their church starts at 10 so it will be an early start because I always go with them.
Dibnlib - I just know the shock your friend will have had to learn she has breast cancer. She should be OK as they have caught it early. Still not a nice prospect to have have an operation and radiotherapy.
Pat - 2 years since your sister died too. Time goes so quickly. Again, you will have the memories especially at this time.
OG - I hope you are feeling better today. You have a lot of worries just now.
I have had a very busy week and am glad to be having a quieter day today. I did go for my usual Sunday morning walk with my friend. Guess what we saw by the farm? 5 peacocks!!! Yes!!! 2 males and 3 females. We thought we had heard them several times before and, on Sunday, there they were!!!

Talking of exotics, I went to Chester Zoo on Monday with a couple of friends. We ended up walking over 3 miles and saw lots. It was nice and quiet. We had lunch in their lovely bistro of course!!!!

Tuesday I met a friend at the golf club for lunch! We hadn’t met for ages so we had a lot of catching up to do. I just had Welsh Rarebit and very nice it was too!!!!
Yesterday was a busy day. On Tuesday I had had a panic phone call from my friend in the assisted living. Somehow, she had managed to drive her electric wheelchair over her iPad which was on the floor and the screen was totally smashed!!!! As she is not mobile and doesn’t go out, her iPad is her lifeline. I did some googling and phoning and, amazingly, I found a tech shop in our little town which said they could fit a new screen. As my friend doesn’t get up early she left the iPad in reception and I called for it just after 9. I walked into town and took it to the very nice man who said it would be ready for me to collect at 3. I came home and wrote a letter to a friend whose husband has just died! Then I picked 2 friends up and we went out to lunch. We are all former colleagues. Most of chose the turkey, cranberry and stuffing toasted baguette. It was gorgeous but very filling. I dropped my friend off, parked at the assisted living and walked into town. The iPad was fixed!!! I climbed 2 floors up to my friend’s flat (I always use the stairs) only to find that she wasn’t in!!! I tracked her down to the lounge where they were having a visit from the tiny children from a local nursery school (pre school) They were so sweet. I had a chat to my friend and she asked me to take the iPad up to her room to be safe and to pick up the cheque she had left me. So 2 flights of stairs again! I was tired when I got home but I didn’t need to cook as I was still full!!!

You can see why I am appreciating my quieter day today. My friend has emailed me and is very grateful.

  • Morning all:   Am reading posts in between everything ele but no time for thoughtul replies right now, except dibnlib - your friend should be fine (op and radiology notwithstanding).  Our neighbor down the road had a lumpectom and same aftercare and is fine; shie's out and about with her dog as usual.    And Rusy, my keyboard is sitll sticking and I don't have time to fix it so could you pop by and pick it up and drop it off at that nice techy place near you?  :-)

Hugs to everyone else with worries and concerns - you are all dear people!

Meanwhile, apologies in advance if the following offends any of Mr. T's supporters.....  (you'll need your speakers):

  • It would be a pleasure Annette. Trouble is, it would take more than 4 hours!!!! Not watched the video yet!!
