Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 15 December 2024

HAPPY NEW WEEK and HAPPY FULL MOON!

The last full moon of 2024 will occur early Sunday morning  (December 15) in the US and UK. The Geminid Meteor Shower will also be peaking, although the light of the full moon may impair the view of the meteors. This moon will be the Winter Solstice moon.

Last Tuesday (the 10th), my region had multiple meteorite falls as a result of the Geminid Shower. That's when the meteors don't fully burn up in the atmosphere and instead hit the ground.

Many people had security cam and doorbell cam footage of the bright light and the flash as a meteor hit. Others heard booms, and many heard an ongoing rumble like loud thunder (sometimes accompanied by a hissing sound). People also smelled a foul odor like burning metal and smoke.

The meteorite closest to me hit just after 4:00 a.m., so I was in bed. However, I heard the long, loud thunder and my floors shook. I also smelled that ghastly odor.

Many people here didn't know about the Geminids, so they immediately concluded that war had broken out--an indication of the fear and anxiety of our political climate right now.

Everyone have a good week. Love and hugs to all.

  • Thanks for starting us off again, Diane.  How strange to have experience of the geminids. Didn't know you could feel them hit the ground!

Rusty:  No, didnt watch the Shetland series - do you mean the detective one?  We watch very few detective series now as have seen so many over the years. I agree that the governments are probably investigating the drones but don't want to alarm, or inform the public about their beliefs on that.

OG - Sorry things are not so good with J.

AQ - Those temps sound horrendous - I would be a rag. Hope you can get your air con working to full efficiency. Your poor tomato plants! Gosh, have they ended school already? Ours finish mostly this Friday, but then they have a whole two weeks off. The poor parents struggle with both working these days. Our son has had to take some time off. Good that you can help your daughter with babysitting.

Dibnlib:  Hope you're feeling better today. There are a lot of nasty things around.

Annette:  Fingers crossed for you all with the sale of the AZ house. Never much fun, these things.

We got our Christmas decs out from under the stairs yesterday but not many things are up yet- I have to dust first!! Dusting is not a high priority for me these days. Please forgive any spelling errors as I dont see the words too clearly now and have to go over it all twice...

  • That's it I'm thoroughly cheesed off. I was on my third reply and have just lost it all. I'm using my Kindle and all I did was move my hand to be more comfortable...

I'll try later. My hands don't do as I tell them. It's the Dupuytrens, I have it both hands :-(

  • Thanks Lindy,  I am feeling a little better but my OH is still very much under the weather and he started with a sore throat first.         HEATHER  `oh dear, I thought it was meant to be third time lucky!!!

  • Feeling for a friend of mine whose Mum lives in Shetland and my friend who has terminal breast cancer lives in Inverness.  Her Mum has fallen and broken her left hip and dislocated her shoulder. She was on a list for a hip replacement but it was the other one!!!!.  She has been air lifted to Aberdeen and my friend caught the train to visit her and keep her Step Dad company but she has to be  back for more treatment on Wednesday.  What a nightmare.

  • OK - here goes.

DIBNLIB - sorry about your OH but good that you are feeling a bit better.

OG,- poor J. I'm assuming it is his tummy problems. I hope that he gets better soon. And your poor granddaughter - Crohns is horrible. I had a cousin who had it. She was always pale and ' delicate ' but lived to almost 80.

AQ - I can't imagine that heat. I remember being in Cyprus, years ago when it was 34 degrees. Awful !

LYNETTE - good to hear from you. I couldn't quite understand what you meant, about the CPAP machine - I thought it was just for night time use...

My oldest granddaughters Katie and Amy have done my Christmas decorations. Really only because the two young ones are coming to stay with me for a week. Sam will come up as well. OG - he is now at HMS Sultan, which is the Royal Navy aircraft engineering college. When he has placements it will indeed be Yeovilton or RNAS Culdrose.

I'm going to post this now before another disaster !

  • Just saw your post,  DIBNLIB. What bad luck for your friends mum. My thoughts are with your friend.

  • Hi, folks.

I apologize for this post, because you all are probably bored with this story. But I was REALLY, REALLY (REALLY!) excited to see this!

The American Meteor Society has now documented the meteor event that occurred in my region last Tuesday, and it's remarkable. It was centered in my immediate area, but experienced in a much larger region than I thought.

First, most of the reporting that I've seen on this has been in  local media, so you all couldn't access the links. But here's a good, very short article on Yahoo from the Indianapolis newspaper. It documents what actually happened, even that ghastly burning metal odor.

Second, here's the American Meteor Society explanation of the event, with videos. The videos are only a few seconds each. If you scroll down and watch the two videos in the second row, you can hear the BIZARRE sound--the hissing thunder sound--and witness the flash. It's no wonder it woke me up. I wish I'd seen the light!

    I'll shut up now. LOL!

  • You may have to click the sound icon to turn on the sound in the videos.

  • Diane - Not at all boring.  Absolutely fascinating.  Looking at the map, it seems things were centred on Indianapolis.  I don't know which bit of the state you are in, but it certainly seems things were centred there.  Not surprised the flash woke you up.  I was woken up on Saturday night by the full moon, which seemed to be very much brighter than usual.  Everything has been so grey and miserable in my little corner of the world for so long - just to see brilliant moonlight was a treat.  I'm fascinated by meterological phenomena and really enjoy your posts.  Keep going!
