Weekly Chat (Non-Osprey), 4 August 2024

HAPPY NEW WEEK!

I don't have any wildlife stories this week. It stormed every day here. Hot and humid and torrential rain. I was exhausted after my dog-sitting. One of the dogs is 18 years old. She wouldn't sleep at night. She got out of her bed every hour, went to the kitchen, and barked and barked...

So, I have slept in front of the fan most of the week and followed the news/politics. I intend to come on this site tomorrow and make replies. Sorry I haven't been very functional.

Everyone have a good week. Love and hugs to all!!!

  • AQ - I so hope that the move can happen soon and also the move to a Nursing Home asap. Thoughts are with you, your OH and family.

  • AQ:  Let us know how it all transpires with OH.  Is there anyway you can see your travel group and also OH?   Yes, I was horrified for the piano (and the player)  - i t was bucketing down!  I agree choosing the Seine has been problematic.  Did no-one consider possibility of bad weather?  Not to mention pollution.

Kamala has just named her VP choice - Tim Waltz, Governor of Minnesota.  IHe's not as well known (at least to us on the West Coast) as some of the other candidates, but the 'Coasts' are typically reliable bases for the Dems, whereas the Midwest states, often known somewhat dismissively as the fly-over States, present more challenges.  I'd be interested to know what Diane and bjane think.

  • LINDA – I always imagine that only books should be on bookshelves – not plants, ornaments and “stuff”!

AQ – So, if today’s move is not to a nursing home, where is it to?  Sounds like something to add additional confusion to your poor OH’s condition!

Had better weather today – dry, hot and sunny – but breezy.  OH did a couple of small garden jobs – I stayed out the way so he didn’t have the added task of moving me around.

J walked into town for exercise then discovered his hand was painful and couldn’t hold his walking stick to come home.  He also “couldn’t” empty the dishwasher (his regular task) so OH had to add that into what he was doing.  All going out for lunch tomorrow – I expect he will be okay for that!

  • AQ - I too hope that your OH’s move goes smoothly. As has been said, it will be very confusing for him. I hope a permanent place becomes available soon.
OG - our weather was bright and breezy too. I went with a couple of friends to Burton Mere RSPB. They are not really birders so we just had a lovely relaxing walk. We had lunch there of course. We went on to stroll round the gardens at nearby Burton Manor afterwards. It was a very pleasant day.

  • Well. It’s very quiet on here. I have been working in the French lesson I have been preparing. I am almost ready to print the worksheets.

I have been invited out for a meal tonight. My friends want to investigate the restaurant with a view to booking it for the dining group they are in. They asked me if I would like to go with them. Naturally I said I would be very happy to give my opinion on the place. I have been there before (quite a while ago) but it is now under new management. I will report back!

  • Rusty:  More dining out?!  I'm sure the restaurants in your area would close down if you started eating at home!  :-)   What kind of food is on the agenda tonight I wonder.  (I'm putting on pounds just reading your posts.)

Meanwhile, the where-to-put-the-bird-feeder dilemma continues:  Three days ago we hung it under the eaves outside the patio door.  The birds finally found it yesterday, but so did the squirrel, who climbed up the plumeria (too short to reach the feeder!) then onto the back of the bench to check things out.  I chased him off a couple of times but then heard a crash and found he tipped over - and broken - a pretty little pot with a Kalanchoe in it.  Grrrr.

    Anyone home?

What is this stuff that I can't climb?

  • That's one very cheeky squirrel, Annette.  They are very clever ... and a real nuisance.  I planted a couple of pots up earlier in the week.  Day 1 was fine - but on Day 2 I opened the door to see a large hole in one of the pots ... grrrrrrrr.

AQ - I do hope things are moving forward for your OH.  As if your life wasn't unsettled enough, all this doubt of 'when' and 'where' is certainly not helping you.  Thughts and prayers continuing for you both.  And of course for the rest of the family.

  • Here I am again.... Today I  flew out to the shop and rushed back to change, as we then went to the funeral of my OHs cousin. It was in a place we don't know at all, so my OH had to somehow dredge his memory of places nearby and then follow a hunch. We arrived safely but a full half hour early - better than late!

After the service, we arranged to follow someone from the family, in the car, to the  venue for refreshments. This turned out to be many miles away & anyway, we lost our benefactors within the 1st 5 minutes!  We were saved by my OHs sister finding the venue on her phone's SatNav.

We stayed there for a long time talking and eating, then got home much later than planned. Phew.

Tomorrow we are off to Wales again for a rest! So now I have to pack. But first an early bed is in order.

  • LINDA - sounds like you are ready for that rest in Wales!  Your OH does not seem to have slowed down at all - and you with him!

Had our shopping trip with lunch - nearly cancelled as J said he wouldn't manage with his hurting hand, but it was a bit better after the night and he couldn't resist the thought of his usual "farmers all-day breakfast" there!  W stocked up with lots of meat for the freezer, but the journeys were easier so we had plenty of time in the afternoon to get on with packing and preparing to freeze.

It was a showery day, but only when we were in the car, and not bad to look at.

  • Lindy - I hope you and your OH enjoy your trip to Wales and that you can relax.

OG - glad you got your outing and your lunch.

I am just home from my meal out. It was excellent. Turns out it was steak night. I had ribeye medium rare, peppercorn sauce, big grilled mushroom grilled tomato and Parmesan fries plus a glass of red all for £20. Excellent food and excellent value. Lovely friendly efficient staff. I would go again,
