MANTON BAY - March 2024

Brief history: The nest was first occupied by White 08(97) and Green 5N(04) in 2007 who raised 2 chicks.  In 2008 they paired again but the nest failed and in 2009 it was unused.   In 2010 a new pair, Green 5R(04) and an unringed female nicknamed Mrs 5R, took up residence and over the next four years raised 11 chicks.   Green 5R(04) failed to return in 2014 and Mrs 5R paired with a new mate, Blue 28(10) and laid 3 eggs.  Blue 33(11) arrived determined to claim this nest and ousted Blue 28(10).  Blue 33(11) kicked out the eggs and spent the remainder of the season bonding with Mrs 5R who was then officially named “Maya”.   Since 2015, Maya and Blue 33(11) have paired up each year and to date have successfully raised 26 chicks.

Blue33 flew in to defend, a pair of geese flew by honking (I can't tell what type), then Maya arrived and Blue33 managed a good mating!

Nice nest lining and more to come, no doubt!

  • Nice pic Scylla, nest is looking good! Grinning

    Good Morning Karen and All

Thank you for all the fantastic updates and managing this new disastrous thread so very well!

Just thought would brave it and have a practice on the system before the scary end of month usual go slow and before we go to visit Manton..... Not that we have anything arranged yet but hope to soon!

We also think 33 is not his usual self Karen and hope today he'll be a bit more like it and bring in some fish!

Sorry in advance if this ends up in the wrong place!

  • Hi LAM - great to see you and yes, a practice is a very good idea before you visit and hopefully treat us to some on the spot reports.

Replying to the Opening Post seems to be working best - just as you did - for all new observations / chats and brilliant dating them.  That way the post is newest and in chronological order.   And if we want to add a separate note, capture to a particular post or when replying to someone, we can reply directly to that post just as I am doing now.  But all very much trial and error - we will all find a way to suit us.

Yes 33 doesn't seem as enthusiastic this season.   I wondering if the bin lid on the nest has helped as the EGs didn't get in to pack it down, dig holes so maybe a bit easier for them to scrape out hence not needing to build it up so much as there hasn't been the same number of sticks brought in.

Also not the daily fish we expect to see for Maya.  If she isn't properly nourished I don't think we'll see 4 eggs but she may be eating off the nest.

You will be looking forward to visiting.  My brother is fishing Rutland again on 23rd May for 4 days.

Crazy, but wonderful, to think we will be seeing eggs here towards the end of the month!!

    Off out now - SYL

  • Lovely  to see you again, LAM. I look forward to reading your reports (somewhere!!) In due course. I do hope 33 is just getting over a possibly  arduous migration, rather than anything more sinister. It hasn't deterred his reacquaintance with his long sticks, however!

  • Hello Karen

Definitely we'll do some on the spots when we go for you.

We did see that 33 had been to Gwash fish farm over last weekend but sat looking at the fish rather than diving to grab one out! We were a bit worried as seems strange! We'll keep an eye on him from the nest Kissing heart.

By the time we go they'll definitely have eggs but agree perhaps not 4 this time. Hope your brother has good weather for his trip as it needs to settle down a bit from all this wind and rain.
