2023 return dates: NC0(16) - 17.3.23 (07:43)  Laddie (LM12) - 17.3.23 (13:43)

Well, what an end the 2023 season turned out to be! Who can forget the battle for the nest between both juveniles, PF4(F) & PF5(M), and then to see the total domination and aggression by the eldest when 'owning' the nest, not only to her sibling but also to dear Laddie when he provided her with fish. The season synopsis can be read in the final LotL Osprey Diary here.  Did NC0 leave early to undertake her southerly migration on the 15th July, or could there have been another reason for her not to be seen on the webcam or around the reserve?

We wait in anticipation for Laddie and NC0's safe return to Loch of the Lowes. Let us very much hope for a 'fraught-free' 2024 season...

  • Aww, bless you Scylla. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary but I did only have quick scroll through the footage Hugging

  • That was another super fish she caught herself - you got the best shot of it, Sandra (which you don't need me to tell you!), the next frame is clearer but some of the fish is hidden, dang!

    Morning All,

NC0 hasn't been on the nest so far, as far as I can tell, but just saw her fly from the birch area, low past the left side of the nest

7:39 Fish still in her talons

7:43 Heard a ruffle of feathers so she's probably on the cam post

    1h  ·
    Morning folks,
We have received a welcome sighting of one the 2017 Lowes' youngsters (PH2) visiting a nest in the Lake District on Monday lunchtime. She was soon ousted by the returning breeding pair, but it is great to receive our first sighting of her since fledging. Interestingly her sibling PH1 visited the Lowes nest in 2019, in his first year of returning to Scotland!
Meanwhile, NC0 is still waiting patiently for the return of her mate LM12. We are approaching the end of the window of when we would expect to see him, with his latest recorded return date being the 30th March, so while we haven't given up hope just yet, it may be that we won't see him back on these shores again.
On a more positive note, NC0 did have the attention of her first skydancing male over the nest site yesterday afternoon. The male remained at a respectful distance, whilst NC0 kept an eye on things from atop the nest cam. Whilst she didn't give off any warning guard calls, or fiercely chase him off, there was some checking of each other out in the air and some strong territory marking flights around the loch by NC0.
With lots of ospreys now beginning to return to breeding sites across the UK, this first bit of interest from a bird either passing through, or without a territory is a welcome development.
We will keep you posted, and of course let you know if LM12 does indeed return!
  • Thanks Billy for the LOTL FB post. Great to hear of PH2 back in the country and that NC0 was getting some sky dancing attention yesterday.  Sadly approaching the end of the window for Laddie’s return. Still crossing fingers for him Fingers crossedFingers crossed but hopefully NC0 will find a new mate this season otherwise.

Many thanks for posting this, Belinda.

Edit: I'm sure LotL will amend their post re the sighting of PH2 on Monday as she was first seen back in the UK as a two year old at the Loch Garten nest in 2019, the same year her brother, PH1, intruded at Lowes
