LOCH GARTEN - END FEBRUARY 2024

Link to July 2023 thread

July proved to be a less nail-biting month than June. Brodie re-appeared early on the 1st and delivered fish (including flounder) to the nest every day bar 1 thereafter, with a record count of 7 on the 21st. Asha also fished and delivered a salmon on the 3rd, as well as quite a few sticks, not least one to replace the sticky-up stick on the nest that got removed on ringing day - 12th July. We have 2 boys, as only 7% of those surveyed had predicted. 2C5 (oldest) became Sid (Vicious) and 2C4 (youngest) is Harry (Nilsson). We had some cracking snaps particularly from the PTZ camera, a 2am fish, self-feeding started, and wing-flapping and helicoptering. Bets are on for a fledge or two very early in August. Sid is 58 days and Harry 56 days on the 1st of August

    Thanks Canuck

  • Oh no. I don't like the sound of that at all. Poor old juveniles.

I think KL5 intruded last year at the LG nest and was certainly around early this season too. In fact I think he mated with Asha a few times?? Possible father of one/both of the chicks? Would need to check back as I have the memory of a gnat

  • I'm in the midst of a video, have just popped in to post the first sign of blood, which I see coincides with CANUCK's report:

I shan't be back any time soon !!!  But will be eventually !!!

  • KL5 has definitely been around throughout the season. Not sure it was the one at the beginning vying for Asha's attention. I know that NN2 was in the picture then trying to mate with Asha. But hey, there have been many O this year at the nest, it's hard to keep track so it could have been him too at the very beginning

In that case, I have the memory of a gnatlet Rofl

I have to have a little light relief, have been shattered into whatever-they-call-it.  Therefore I appreciated also your "old juveniles", dear Korky Broken heart

Yes I've been trawling old posts and think NN2 was around more for mating with Asha than KL5

NN2 ousted Brodie at one point but then Brodie got his own back permanently.

    I'm kinda taking a breather...

I was only thinking how strong the second boy has turned out to be this season, and fingers-crossed there wouldn't be any setbacks  Cry  but it may not be as back as it looks.

  • The juvies (mainly 2C4) vs KL5 - only up to 2C4's bloody fly-off @ 20:34 - and there's at least one mistake that I remembered too late, a duplicated few seconds I think.

    ;

There's been a lot more activity, including flyabouts on the PTZ after dark.  The nest is now empty.

  • Oh crikey, I've only just seen all about this.  Poor Harry.

This is what I have noted on KL5 from 2022 and 2023.  He is just three years old, and comes from the Loch Ness area.

    2022

    17 June 20.16 intruded LG Scylla .

4 July around the LG nest when both chicks 1C1 and 1C2 fledged.

5 July  Intruded LG nest, with Blue 1C1(22)f, she didn't defend the nest, but later she died;  she had an enlarged liver and was suffering from salmonella poisoning.

19 August landed on LG nest, nestorising.

    2023

17 May 12.20 KL5 intruded at LG, hovering above the nest where Asha was incubating.  Brodie had been missing since 16 May, and he brought his last fish on 15 May 18.10 - he returned and provided well!

26 June KL5 intruded at the LG nest again.

So KL5 knows the nest well by now.  I am not quite sure why he would want to usurp the resident family at this late stage in the season.  But on the other hand he did come in mid-August last year, and was nestorising.  Perhaps he has eyes on the nest.  I think Asha will have something different to say about that.  She and Brodie seem a well bonded pair now, and this is their territory.

Where on earth were Asha and Brodie throughout all this?

Thank you so much Canuk for your resume of the events, and Scylla for the pic of 2C4's injury.

The one good point I can see is that Harry was able to fly away.  Being on the optimistic side, perhaps the wound was superficial and looks worse than it actually is.
