Egg No. 2 laid 23 April - Hatched 29 May (36 days)

Egg No. 3 laid 26 April - Hatched 1 June  (37 days) Sadly, this little chick died on 3rd June. It coincided with LJ2 having a leg injury and unable to fish at the time. I don’t know if this was the sole reason, part of the reason or something else. RIP little one Purple heart

The family of 5 for a couple of days. Bob 3, RIP, in between #1 and #2

Four weeks later, our two thriving youngsters, #1 and #2   (36 and 34 days as at  01/07/23)

  • LJ2 delivers a whole fish at 20.01

It looks very chunky whatever type it is

One chick came over to feed straight away

When the other chick did join the feed, it took a while to get some as LM6 continued to feed the first chick

Both chicks did get enough that they withdrew, the first one first.

LM6 ate well too and discarded the fish end at 21.01

My photos have stopped downloading so can’t show everything.

LJ2 came to the nest after he saw LM6 was finished with the fish and he flew away with it to a nearby tree.

  • 22.50 The family are on the nest and perch, settled down for the night.

Can’t get a capture. Hope this is fixed by tomorrow!

  • Glider, sign out then sign in again, that may fix the problem Fingers crossed

Edit: Or did you mean you have a problem on your device?

Thanks Sandra, it’s my iPad playing up. The memory gets too full then I have to delete a lot of photos but it sometimes takes a wee while for it to know when I’ve made space again!
Seems to be working so far this morning. Fingers crossed

  • Wednesday 5 July

Good morning Grinning Today the chicks are 40 and 38 days old. Wonder if they’ll get ringed today.

It’s been a quiet sleepy morning. All together when daycam came on at 04.29. Chicks very cosy snuggled into LM6.

LJ2 was the first to get up at 04.32 doing his big stretch then flap before coming to the nest.

04.53 LM6 gets up after her long lie in. She has a stretch and shake

Both adults leave the nest for the preening perch. Good morning chicks.

Nothing much else has happened. The adults have been on and off the nest and the preening perch, the chicks have been quite quiet resting or up and stretching.

    07.23 LM6 doing a spot of housekeeping

    07.48 LJ2 brings a piece of bark.

08.40 Both adults on the preening perch. LJ2 nearest cam.

09.16 A few soft contact calls and LM6 arrives with a big clump of soft bedding.

09.22 LJ2 arrives and gets to work to sort out the new bedding.

Awww, you're welcome, Glider, it must get so confusing covering two nests. You're a star!

Thanks Sandra, yes it does get confusing but if things aren’t going so well at one nest then the other nest cheers me up and vice versa.

It’s interesting in the huge differences between the two nests here at Brenig and at Alyth. The parent birds are so different in their ways and also a big difference between a nest of 3 and a nest of 2 chicks.

The downside is I’m hardly getting any time to look at other nests and chip in with observations.

  • LM6 left the nest about an hour ago, (09.36) she has been enjoying some preening time on the perch.

    She dropped a pellet

  • 11.17 Fish delivery from LJ2

    11.18 Feed begins

11.35 First chick to retire #1 I would guess.

LM6 continues feeding the other chick

    11.56 second chicks retires

LM6 feeds herself. She stops and looks upwards

    She picks some scraps up

12.11 LJ2 flies to the nest. He starts chipping and mantling. I guess our daily visitor(s) have arrived.

12.12 After a minute of chipping, LJ2 takes the fish and flies off.

  • 14.38 LM6 is on the nest with the chicks. She notices something in the distance.

    She starts mantling and chipping

An Osprey flies from a tree over the water to the side of the nest,

14.39 It’s LJ2 come to help defend (with his piece of fish)

14.42 At one point LJ2 drifts up and down over the nest to cover the chicks

    14.42 An Osprey flies overhead

and round the coastline over the water (magnified)

    14.43 LJ2 flies off a minute later

LM6 watches LJ2 go (magnified) and stays vigilant and it all goes quiet for now.

  • 15.20 Back again. LM6 starts mantling and defending on the nest

The intruder must be right above

A bird is seen flying in the distance (magnified)

    Things quieten down again.
