LOCH GARTEN - JULY 2023

I start this thread with a heavy heart, as Brodie hasn't been seen at all on Friday 30th June. The last fish delivered to the nest was at 21.11 on 28 June, over 48 hours ago. Brodie was last sighted at 09.10 hours on 29 June, over 36 hours ago.

Chick 1 hatched 'early morning' on the 4 June and chick 2 overnight on 6 June. One egg didn't hatch (maybe number 1?). There were lots of intruders during the month of June, including KL5, and last year's male Axel on the weekend of 17/18th.  Brodie has disappeared before for a couple of days, and no fish were delivered over the first weekend after hatching on 10/11th June so maybe we should keep the faith and cross all eyes, toes and fingers that Brodie will come good, recover from whatever keeps him away from his nest and chicks, and deliver a stonking fish first thing on 1 July.

  • An update

    Saturday 8 July 2023

Scylla    No rain overnight.  Asha has been on the campost since she returned from a break at 04.14.

08.45     Korky    Nae fish yet this morning, but Asha on the look-out post – the nest perch

09.17     Trevor   All quiet on the osprey front

It's been very windy.  Just before the fish delivery Asha was blown off balance, landing in between the chicks.

11.00.22 Trevor #1 fish, a tiddler, from Brodie who left quickly

11.01                  Asha continued to call for a minute before turning her attention to feeding #1 chick..  #2 moved to the far rim as #1 stood up, ready to 'chest' it again.

    Only #1 is fed

11.06                  PTZ did a scan in search of Brodie, but didn't find him.

11.08                  Asha keeps pausing to look up.

11.12                  #1 has had its fill.  #2 tries coming in behind, checking for left overs. The fish appears to have gone already.  Asha cleans her beak on the rim.   I imagine Asha isn't full after that tiddler.

11.18                  #2 tries moving a largish stick.  With it's wide white stripe gone, I have to keep an eye on them to make sure I know which is which.  It's easy at meal times of course.  #2 is turned away, cowering out of harms reach.  Possibly tail length is another indicator, with the adult feathers coming through more on #1.  The three black lines on their foreheads - #1's are darker and slightly more distinct.  #2 has slightly more white showing, or light grey.  Do #2's auburn feather go further up the neck that on #1?  #2 has a lighter stripe on top of the 'mask'.  #1 is more grey.

11.20                  #2 is beginning to get strength in its legs now.  A bit wobbly, but is standing.

11.24                  Not to be outdone, #1 picks up a twig from the nest and carries it to the rim!

11.28                  #1 moves a larger stick to the rim!

12.01                  The winds sounds quite strong.  The nest is certainly moving a lot.

12.36                  No sign of #2 fish yet.  PTZ zooms out, shows the band around the tree to prevent pine martens climbing up.  Then a wire mesh fence with barbed wire to stop anything bigger getting closer to the nest – animal or human.

The clouds are beginning to roll in

    12.06

    12.45

At least with the wind, any showers will pass quickly, rather than setting in

  • Nothing to report. All quiet. Even the wind has dropped a lot. Asha has barely moved for a couple of hours

The chicks are getting restless, and hungry.  Will Asha feel the need to go fishing again?
