LOCH GARTEN - JULY 2023

I start this thread with a heavy heart, as Brodie hasn't been seen at all on Friday 30th June. The last fish delivered to the nest was at 21.11 on 28 June, over 48 hours ago. Brodie was last sighted at 09.10 hours on 29 June, over 36 hours ago.

Chick 1 hatched 'early morning' on the 4 June and chick 2 overnight on 6 June. One egg didn't hatch (maybe number 1?). There were lots of intruders during the month of June, including KL5, and last year's male Axel on the weekend of 17/18th.  Brodie has disappeared before for a couple of days, and no fish were delivered over the first weekend after hatching on 10/11th June so maybe we should keep the faith and cross all eyes, toes and fingers that Brodie will come good, recover from whatever keeps him away from his nest and chicks, and deliver a stonking fish first thing on 1 July.

  • Great video, thank you Scylla. I noticed Brodie had several long looks at his lads as he was defending      JoyGrinning   , there was that

  • 14.00  Fish #2  a whole brown trout

    24 July 2023

2C5, Sid, #1, is 50 days old today

07.16     Trevor   #1 Fish a whopping brown trout

Something was flying above for some of the time.  Chicks were watching, interested.

Sid had first serving while Harry check the area, and the nest floor.

07.42                  Sid moves away and Harry approaches for his turn

    07.53                  Asha is distracted

07.55                  Sid spots a small bird on the old nest structure, and watches interestingly, moving his head from side to side.

08.00                  The chicks see something flying overhead and watch.  Asha continues to seat the fish.

08.05                  Asha changes position, away from Harry, who has wandered around to get more fish.  Sid has been preening.

08.09                  Harry turns away, Asha continues eating.

08.15                  Asha lets the fish go, picks up some left overs and cleaned her beak.

    08.18                  Asha flew.

08.21                  She returned with another pointy stick and moved some around, balancing them on the rim.

08.24                  She retrieved the fish remains and had seconds.  Harry was lying down, Sid was preening.

08.30                  Harry turns round and takes more fish from Asha.

08.43                  Asha spots something off the nest, and stops feeding Harry, who gives up and moves away.  I am not sure whether there is any fish left, but Asha cleans her beak

08.49                  A cheeping bird catching their attention!

09.18                  Asha flew off to the left, possibly then seen in the sky beyond the nest.  She chipped as she left.  Chicks remained low.

09.22                   Asha landed on the tip of camperch

10.32                  She flew from the camperch, flew around and returned to nest perch.

11.06                  She dropped to the nest, landing on the fish leftover.  The cam zoomed in to watch.

11.07                  There appeared to be a 'bump' sound which caught Asha's attention.  No idea what that might have been – did Brodie land on camperch, or some other bird?  Al three looked briefly.  Cam didn't zoom out.  Asha tucked into the fish,

11.09                  Harry stood up and watched Asha, but didn't beg for more fish.

11.10                  However, Sid does!  But Asha is more intent on feeding herself. first, then feeds Sid.

    Asha feeds Sid seconds

11.37                  Asha is down to the fin tail and skin which she downs 11.38

11.41                  Asha flies to the left, Sid appears to be watching her round to the right.  He is unsure whether to pancake or not!  He doesn't.   Small birds are seen flying around.

11.42                  Asha returns to the nest with another stick.  She landed on Harry who threatens to bite her.

11.59                  She flies again and both chicks stand up and flap!  Where they thinking of following her, LOL.  Sid is 50 days old today, and certainly within the fledging calendar.  We haven't seen him helicoptering yet, but he is clearly getting excited.  A few jumps combined with flapping!

12.03                  PTZ moves to the dead tree.  Asha is there.

12.05                  She flies off.  The boys are seen flapping again, as she landed on camperch (sound and shake of the cam).

13.03                  Brother lying side by side.

13.05                  Asha on the camperch – PTZ

13.13                  Asha lands on the nest with a thick stick that has lots of broken side twigs coming from it.  She marched around the back of Sid who has to move, and put the stick on the back (PTZ view) of the nest..

    14.00                  Fish # 2

14.08                  Sid has had enough and moves away

Asha feeds herself.  Harry remains looking over the edge.

14.10                  Asha had downed the skin and tail fin, and starts calling for another fish.

14.27                 Asha continues calling for another fish
