LOCH GARTEN JUNE 2023

Link to May 2023 thread

Asha is the proud parent of 3 eggs, the father of which being dubious but probably URM - now called Brodie - as we hardly saw NN2 (for whom we wish all the best elsewhere) be accepted by Asha. Brodie had a lot of trouble fending off intruders which has made him a bit flaky in the fish catching and delivery department. Poor old Asha didn't eat for over 2 days last week. The main intruder was KL5, who seems to have stopped hanging around so much now, which is good as we approach hatch date and the need for fish will ramp up.

A scylla-super-snap of the happy parents-to-be

 Also, courtesy of scylla, here are the laying dates;

25 April - egg 1

28 April - egg 2

01 May - egg 3

17.46.57 Brodie brought in his first fish over nearly a day and a half.

He flew @ 16:50, so that's almost an hour it took him there and back and divings in between.

How Asha didn't trample the chicks to death I do not know.  #2 was up first, #1 took quite a while to raise pop up and was down again quitie soon, but I haven't waited till the end.

#1 was the chick with 2 strong dots on the back of its head with 2 not-so-strong beneath them.  #2's pattern was of fuzzy dots on the points of a triangle.

  • Thank goodness, no pretend feeding that time!

  • Oh, at last, thank goodness, I was getting worried, hopefully everything is restored to normal, fish keep coming and KL5 has gone!!! For good.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • Hi scylia. Chick 1 has the triangle of dots on back of head. Chick 2 has the two dots side by side. Chick 1 got most of the early feeding.

We're going to have to sort me out on this Upside down

    Chick #1:

    EDIT - is this clearer?

    From this video:

  • Just catching up after not logging in for a few days but I thought it might be worth mentioning the weather (I live approx an hour North of LG) over the past few days has been around 29.c and the Aviemore Ospreys page on fb says that means the fish are much lower in the water than normal and much harder for the ospreys to catch.

Then today there has been large thunderstorms in some areas but not much lightning and in some cases still no rain but the heat continues so maybe Brodie has been having trouble fishing...

Fingers crossed he'll manage but unfortunately more of the same weather is expected tomorrow (Tuesday) and the rest of the week.

  • Bits of catchup.

Look what she did !!! ImpImpImp

    28s

But as a good mummy, she did try to make sure both the osplets were fed:

  • Hi scylia. In your second video of post June 11 at 11:44 pm, at 0.42 you can see bob 2 with the 2 dark spots on back of his head, and at 1:17 you can see bob 1 with the triangle.

I looked at your post from June 5 at 9:43 am and it shows the triangle on back of bob 1.

  • Hi scylia. In your post of June 11 at 9:04 pm, the one circled is bob 1. In the video at 0:24 you can see the top brown spot that makes the tip of the triangle. But now I will also look for 4 dark brown spots under it as per your circled photo. In the circled photo, you just can't see the top dot that makes up the triangle because of the angle of the chick's head.  Bob 2 definitely has just 2 dark brown spots on back of head (plus he has 2 faint spots under them but I just look for the 2 dark ones).

In the video on June 11 at 1:29 pm, the chick that gets fed first  (bob 1) is the bigger one of the two and you can just sorta make out the triangle at 1:24.  Bob 2, with the two strong dark dots appears around 2:06.  You can also see that it is slightly smaller than its sibling.

I've noticed that during feedings, asha tends to feed bob 1 first, probably because he's just taller than his younger sibling and can get closer to his mom.

Please correct me if I am getting this wrong.
